  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Big Change...

I think the only news that would floor me right now is a new release date; one that is substantially sooner.

It is imperative that we make the final decisions as late in the game as possible for two reasons:

1. We are learning a ton everyday.
2. Technology is advancing so quickly.

We have also learned that we need to keep our program as flexible as possible so upgrades can be done easily. We really do want Scarlet or EPIC to be your last camera purchase. Then, you can upgrade as we make modules better (expect that) and as you need them (not before).

This interaction with the community has been invaluable. While we have to filter out some of the "we want it all and we want it now" posts, the program is better for your suggestions and us learning to listen. The more we know about what we can (and can't) do, the easier it is to listen. In the beginning, we had to ignore a bunch because we had no way to do it. Lots of great ideas, no roadmap to get them done. Things are different now.

I wouldn't be surprised if things continue to change before release. The should. It is to your advantage... and mine. While we are paying overtime like crazy to execute as fast as we can, we have also learned that there is no rush to get it wrong. The announcement a couple of weeks ago was really important to set the tone for a system that interchanges and upgrades everything. Now we have some fairly significant new info to share.

What a fun ride... eh?

Jim

Thank you. We do appreciate what you are all doing.

What is the reason for a delay in new information? I don't want to skim through almost 30 pages to find an answer.

He leapss up from his computer running and screaming as he pulls his hair out!

Aaaahhhhhhgggg!!!!! Expletive, expletive,
expletive! Why won't this stop?

He whines like a baby.

Does anyone else get the image of Jim sitting in some nice lounge chairs with a couple of red team members with all kinds of subservient beings, running around showing them the latest posts and chuckling maniacally as they are read aloud by some unmentionable beast?

I do.

So I have been following these threads because the idea of a Red being the last camera I'll ever own is thrilling. It's a brilliant resurrection of the concept behind why film cameras from 50 years ago are still used today.

Being currently on a shoot with the Red has made it even more apparent that you are a company that I wish every other company in the world was more like. Imagine if our world market ran off the idea of open feedback in technological advancement and the end user as the number one priority...

I know the suggestions for new features are pretty tapped by now and getting a little redundant, but there were a couple things I'd really like to see in a camera someday and you guys over at Red just might be the only ones to listen.

1. Since the camera has a huge software element to it, it would be awesome to allow someone to either use an existing shot, or upload a still image and super impose it for match frames, or video for match moves.

2. Also, if there was a way to add one push iris and/or focus bookmarks this would be an amazing feature. I know that with non electronically controlled lenses this wouldn't be doable, but if there was a way to preset your lens adjustments, then tap a button multiple times for multiple focus marks or iris settings on a handheld shot it would be invaluable in situations where a focus puller would be an impossibility, or where there would need to be a sudden change in exposure during a shot.

I like the way Red works, but this comparision is odd. An old Arri 35 II A/B/C or an Eyemo could still be used in their original configurations, but I highly doubt that a Red One will and can be the last camera in your whole life. And by the way, which camera are you referring to?

ok, I guess 50 years was a generalized statement. But for example, the first eyemo camera was built well over 50 years ago and you can still get amazing images from it if you shot with high quality stock and lenses.

I guess the comparison I was trying is the idea that you upgrade what you want to. In the same sense that film continues to advance, so would sensor technology, etc. Theoretically you could continue to upgrade the Red's sensor and use an older body years from now...You don't have that ability in any other digital camera that I know of.
