  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Big Change...

We are not the "public" that other companies make press/news releases to. We are more like company associates or development partners.
You're beeing quick to consider yourself as a partner.
Just my two cents.

Just keep doing what you're doing

Just keep doing what you're doing

It is imperative that we make the final decisions as late in the game as possible for two reasons:

1. We are learning a ton everyday.
2. Technology is advancing so quickly.

We have also learned that we need to keep our program as flexible as possible so upgrades can be done easily. We really do want Scarlet or EPIC to be your last camera purchase. Then, you can upgrade as we make modules better (expect that) and as you need them (not before).

This interaction with the community has been invaluable. While we have to filter out some of the "we want it all and we want it now" posts, the program is better for your suggestions and us learning to listen. The more we know about what we can (and can't) do, the easier it is to listen. In the beginning, we had to ignore a bunch because we had no way to do it. Lots of great ideas, no roadmap to get them done. Things are different now.

I wouldn't be surprised if things continue to change before release. The should. It is to your advantage... and mine. While we are paying overtime like crazy to execute as fast as we can, we have also learned that there is no rush to get it wrong. The announcement a couple of weeks ago was really important to set the tone for a system that interchanges and upgrades everything. Now we have some fairly significant new info to share.

What a fun ride... eh?

Jim

I'm in and loving what you're doing. Just keep doing what you're doing and thank you for giving me the opportunity to use your camera.

In for upgrading to Epic and having Scarlet on the side.

Best to you,
Frazier #3002

Well, this sure is fun.
I just hope next week's announcement will include something about a quantum improvement in post workflow. Working in 4K has been nothing short of a nightmare for me (post-wise, of course). As things stand right now, I'm afraid I can't say that I'm looking forward to edit or grade those (foreseeably) wonderful images that will come out of the new 6K or 9K sensors...
I'll still be here waiting, anyway...

Im excited about the new changes whatever they may be but I mainly hope they will release the price of the fixed lense scarlet.

But I wanted to say something about a post Jim posted that I think everyone misunderstood. Jim, correct me if im wrong. He posted "the 13th was insignificant....". Now he posted that in response to someone elses post saying that the 13th was insignificant. So I think Jim was saying it more like, do you really think the 13th was insignificant???? I even think the other guys post was being sarcastic. I think everyone actually thinks that the previous announcements were big even Jim.

I don't want it all! But I would like it now...

I demand that RED labels their company and products:

"SURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: This company may cause internet addiction, loss of sleep, tachycardia and rebelieving in supernatural entities comparable to santa claus."

and reading the same "new" epic and scarlet specs every day over and over again, does become boring after a month. so it was about time, you guys finally changed something.

do not grow up! it's tons more fun like this.

Just thinking and being picky... I haven't read the whole 34 pages yet (17 so far), so if anyone mentioned this already, I'm sorry.

RED hasn't offered what Canon TRIED to offer, that is a "working" FF35mm (put a resolution here) 1-30fps interchangeable lens camera with crazy lowlight capabilities for less than $3K ready out of the box... Of course the FF35 Scarlet is a real cinema camera with 6K resolution, not a DSLR pretending to record video... But sometimes I just wish I could have a FF35mm 3K resolution camera for $3K.

As I said this is me being picky. I was going to buy and love the first and second fixed lens Scarlets and I'll do the same with whatever comes now, as long as it stays affordable for me, but you know, RED is a place where dreams come true. My dream is a FF35mm $3K camera. Canon tried and failed, but it was close. Maybe RED found the way a few days ago.

Just so we are clear, Canon does NOT read the full sensor for video. It reads the full frame size BUT skips rows (lots and lots of them). That doesn't count as close in my book. You don't even need a fast sensor to do that parlor trick.

You're right Jim, they were far from making it perfect and their camera is totally useless for cinema, but it's a step closer to an idea that sounds very good. Anyway I still think the first and second sub$3000 Scarlets were just too amazing to be true. They just lack the feature that would make them my absolute perfect camera, but as I said, I'll still buy and love my Scarlet simply because it's my 99% perfect camera.

Can't wait to see what you have for us on Dec 3rd!!

Thanks for everything Jim.

Okay... just wondering... did you guys readed Jim´s signature? camera specs have already changed... just remains the delivery dates!
What about Scarlet/Epic being released earlyer?!?

Oh i wish... you're new here aren't you ;)

I am not sure if RED has EVER released something earlier than initially promised.

Personally I'm still waiting for stuff they promised years ago (/i technology, clean audio, a REDCINE that works properly, prime lenses, etc)

I would just like to second a $3k camera. My budget is ~$5k. I would love to get a 10MP DSLR that could shoot @ 4K(hell, even 2K would be enough) that also supports Canon/Nikkor lenses. $2.5k to $7k is a huge jump go get to the S35. If you could come out with one in between, I would buy it no questions asked.

The Canon/Nikon offerings are ok, but I know that anything that RED comes out with would absolutely destroy them in price/perfomance.

This is like painting every fourth inch of a 32" portrait, cutting holes in the canvas and telling you customer to "stand back a dozen yards". Apparently Canon cares more about the marketing than the customer, as windowing the frame to the center (best part of the optics) would likely yield a better image.

My guess is that the sensor or DSP they use can't handle that many pixels near each other at that refresh rate. Speaking of parlor tricks have you ever seen someone tie a cherry stem with their tongue?

If the 13th was insignificant... The suspense will have few victims on this forum...But, bring it on anyway...Oh, Christmass is comming...

Bruce,

We are very in tune on expecting things that were promised for R1 and now they have been diverted to the other cameras... :angry2:

So, my interest would be that Jim will allow the first 1,000 believers to use the $17,500 toward ANY of the cameras, not just for Epic. That way they can deliver the promises made if we get the most advanced Scarlet, and still have money left for the other neat accessories shown. That will be great sound to my ears!!!:bleh:

Actually now that you mention it. I have had the thought of a "Red-iola" or "Red-beck" or something like that. Which would be a stripped down edit-bay with all the features found on a flatbed edit-suite for film. It would have a custom-built OS that included the NLE as a part of the core. Hardware-guaranteed to support up to 4K realtime previews of sequences.

Only bare minimum would be done with this. Only the things you would do in a 35mm edit suite. Straight cuts and maybe fades. ANY compositing would be done elsewhere on a more suited machine. And by that I mean titles, double-exposures and all that. Also, No elaborate sound mixing... You either use the sound that comes with the clip or assign another soundtrack if you have gotten it through post-sound... And that's it. :)

Makes sense. Sounds good. But it's a step backwards to old-style film-centric production philosophies. A world where Avid has bins. What the hell's a "bin" (I know what a bin is, but the metaphor is meaningless to filmmakers growing up in the digital generation).

Red is part of the future, a future where kids cut movies on their laptops slouched on sofas, compositing gun shots and blood spats, color-correcting on magic bullet, whilst mixing in surround sound.

Why get someone else to do your fades and so on? Old-school makes sense, but not to the creative heart of the future spirit.

Maybe a RED-iola with other virtual layers, like the kind of rack metaphors used in music production (made in bedrooms). Okay, I'm contradicting myself, but ain't that the wonder of it all. The sky is NOT the limit.

I-CHING: Understand the limits, but without any limitations.

But now I'm really off topic.....

You're so right. Why stick to old behaviours if they are not needed anymore? I'm okay with rules and Things that work the way they do best, but if you can have it better, why stick with the old stuff? Because it's known?

No way.

Keep breaking Rule after Rule to reach to the extreeeme *g*

Bruce is mostly correct... we have been known to be late on occasion. :-)

But Bruce's list needs a comment. /i technology is in the latest cameras and will be a part of the free upgrade we have now begun... as is the "clean" audio upgrade. There is a new REDCINE just about to be released and the Primes are coming....

What is missing from Bruce's list is all the things we have done in the last year that were NOT promised when our customers bought the camera. We have enabled a TON of features that were a surprise (and free). When looking at the whole RED experience, it is only fair that we all acknowledge things we did well and things we need to improve on. We are very comfortable that net result is favorable for a 1st camera effort. And we will continue to improve. You'll see... :-)

Jim
