cheap and cheerful...

I haven't gone through this whole thread, so apologies if someone mentioned this already...

In no way will this compete with the kind of products listed here. But in a pinch...

Make your own lite panel!

They also have multicolored.

Hi Everyone,

First Cool Lights LED 600 panels are coming off the line. I'm posting some pictures here for reference. Availability is looking like end of January at this point for US customers, but of course that can always change based on shipping and all that. We'll start shipping these direct from China very soon though to Australia and Europe before we get to the USA. Changes since last time we talked. There are now 3 versions:

5600K flood
5600K spot
3200K spot

Lux output of the panels is impressive (.6m, 1.1m and 2.1m respectively for each fixture):

Cool Lights 5600K spot 7200L 2610L 740L
Cool Lights 5600K flood 6000L 1900L 600L

3200K spot will be just a bit weaker than the 5600K spot.

For comparison sake here are the specs of an Arri 650w fresnel...

Arri 650 12 degree spot 7694L 2770L 693L
Arri 650 30 degree medium 2542L 915L 229L
Arri 650 52 degree flood 1417L 510L 128L

Power input is now expanded from 10VDC to 24VDC thanks to the inclusion of a buck / boost converter (DC to DC). That can come in either through the battery adapter plates or the 4 pin XLR.

First picture shows the back of the unit with descriptions.

This is the top of the unit showing the carry handle and spring loaded accessory locks that hold the barndoors in place. Very quick release.

The battery plates work like most battery plates. A top and bottom plate sandwiched together. Attach the bottom plate to the fixture first then attach the keyed molex connector and screw the top battery plate and adapter to the bottom one. Simple

This is the V Mount version of the plate.

thanks rich. can't wait to get my hands on these :)

Looks pretty good, my only concern would be that little knuckle on the bottom holding it up when there's a battery on it - I would be very concerned about droop. Has that been a problem, and will there be one with a yoke?

Btw, interesting paper about lumens and whatnot. Thanks for that.

Hi Charles and Brandon,

Thanks for the kind words.

No problem with droop. The angle adjustable stand adapter is commonly used on some Chinese fluorescent models (none of ours though) and I agree there can be problems of droop with a large and/or heavy fixture like that (that's exactly why I don't use it for those) but with a small fixture like this (3 to 4 lbs and 10" x 10" x 3 1/4") it's not a problem even with a battery. We didn't plan a yoke version at this time but could certainly do one in the future. The idea was to keep weight and size down as much as possible.

for the record, I would also be interested in a yoke accessory.

Hey Richard. Really interested in getting one of these LED panels - when can i actually place and order for one? Defintely looking to get a daylight flood led panel at some stage and these look perfect.

Andi.

Richard,

I too am interested. And for $425 I will most likely get TWO!!! I am having some trouble deciding between the Spot and Flood though. I have an oncamera Litepanel, and got the spot version cause I thought I could always diffuse it. Do you suppose that logic applied here as well?

Always like to keep my choices where possible.

Jay

Hi Jay,

Actually, the REDuser price is $399.00 ;-)

I am told (but haven't verified for myself), that the plastic fresnel lenses used on overhead projectors (which I believe you can buy separately at places like office depot) make a great diffusion/beam widener for a panel like this. Given we have a slide in accessory adapter, it would be easy to apply such a panel to the front of the fixture. Other such light modifiers would be the cracked ice or prismatic diffusion plastic panels in the Acoustic Ceiling Tile dept of Home Depot. These are famous for scattering light but not cutting too much intensity.

As soon as I get back to the USA in late January, I do want to try this out as that would be a super and inexpensive accessory to offer later on I think.

Nice... very nice

Hi Richard,

hope your well. Let me know about getting a pre-order in. I want 2 of these
in spot mode.

thanks

I'm REALLY interested in these: http://www.prompterpeople.com/led500.php

anyone used them?

I've use these to demo Veescope Live at the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro Users Group, just about every month for the last two years. The build quality isn't great. The are durable, but there weren't put together all that well. They insides contained rusty hardware. They could really use diffusion, as the beam angle is very narrow from LEDs in general. If there was a way of attaching a soft-box then many of the issues would go away. For the money, they are a pretty good deal when compared to Lite-panels.
