  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Good points,
Thanks for sharing

Has this 4K .r3d and 4k prores output been confirmed somewhere? I know Jarred hinted 4k prores was potentially possible but unconfirmed.

I haven't read anything about a 4K .r3d downsample while shooting 8k. Sources anyone?

WHAAAAAAAAAAT???????????????

That would be insane! Wow, why no one is talking about this??

From the article it seems it will indeed downconvert to 4K...mmm...anyone has more info???

Just in case RED wasn't aware ;-):

UHD ProRes 444 at up to 60fps, scaled from capture format, would make the Weapon more attractive to some of my clients. The files would be huge, but with a newer Mac you could work with hero media throughout the pipeline and just knock the monitoring rez down as needed to keep snappy response.

Of course this may all be moot if the Weapon still lacks the muscle to create scaled UHD output in any form - initial specs show a 1080P limit via brain HDMI/SDI. AFAIK it takes the REDcast module to get UHD monitoring/recordable signal output over HDMI and/or SDI.

I've asked the Moderator on that website to review this point of ambiguity.

If Red downsample to a 4k Bayer and store in R3D ... I would have thought this would reduce would thought it would be more than just resolution being thrown away if a 4k finish was the target.

My take on Jon's article was that just because 8K Weapon can shoot a big frame, doesn't mean the sensor can't be windowed when desired. He even suggested that 4.8K of real estate could be imaged with any S35 glass to make a credible UHD/4K picture even after paying the Bayer penalty.

Regarding 20x40

Regarding 20x40

Thanks for the interest in this article.
The numbers are not typos, they're not official until confirmed, but like any camera work in progress, specs may change.
I'm sure the designers are listening to comments.

One of the "fun" things about RED's 8K Dragon sensor is the actual format size is 40.96x21.60mm for 8K shooting.

If those numbers look familiar, think of the DCI 4K pixel dimensions, which are 4096x2160.

But Dragon s35mm is not 4k it's more like 5.2k. Isn't it?

Do you assume RED will do pixel skipping from 8k sensor to 4k R3D? lol

And DCI 8K is 8192x4320, the exact pixel resolution of 8K Dragon... All the numbers just fall into place and make sense just about any way you look at them. I'm really trying to figure out how anyone could still be confused as to the benefits of the upcoming 8K system. I understand if it's outside of the budget, that's one thing. I'm just not sure I understand the confusion or the lack of foresight into this as to why anyone would want it.

It's fun how the 40.96 and 21.60 numbers work out. Makes them super simple to remember and work with. But I also guess that's the advantage of picking a standardized pixel raster size and using a nice even 5um pixel size on the sensor.

I think that wine January 2016 rolls around, those who didn't pre-buy the 8K upgrade for the $10K price are going to be kicking themselves. Especially if they were on the fence about it.

As for S35 coverage, 5K on Dragon fits in S35 just fine. 4.8K or so will fit inside most any 35mm cinema lens circle for older lenses designed to cover 35mm Academy format or other flavors smaller than S35. 8K Dragon falls into a 43mm image circle and is covered by 35mm full frame glass.

I think we need more glass that will fit the whole sensor to make it more popular.. I see no point to spend this much to crop my sensor lol

I 100% agree Jeff. It makes sense from top to bottom. 5K in the S35 format, 8K in the VistaVision+ format. Having access to 8K for various benefits that extra resolution can provide even for 4K production is interesting.

While I'll reserve my "official-ish" coverage notes for now here's everything I can think of that will be fun for VistaVision coverage on Weapon 8K Dragon that we "know of" today.

Zeiss
- Compact Primes
- Compact Zooms (purpose designed for motion)
- Any ZE or ZF FF35 still lens.
- Newer OTUS Primes (hybrid still/motion design)
- Classic Zeiss still lenses as well

Schneider
- Xenon-FF Primes (purpose designed for motion)

Canon
- Canon CN-E Primes
- A whole lot of EF Mount FF35 still lenses.
- Vintage Canon FD still lenses (and FL)

Nikon
- Any Nikon F Mount FF35 still lens

Sigma
- Any EF/F mount Sigma glass
- Including the newer ART Series

Leica
- Vintage Leica-R primes and zooms
- Some Leica-M FF35 glass

Voigtlander
- EF/F Primes
- Some Leica-M Primes

Olympus
- Vintage OM Zuiko FF35 glass.

Hasselblad, Mamiya, Pentax, ETC.
- Medium Format glass, no coverage concerns what's so ever and greate "field through corner/edge" performance.

A SLEW of other "Vintage" lenses
-Takumar, etc......

Obviously a lot of these can be rehoused, adapted, and Cine-Modded if they aren't already "purpose designed" for motion use.

In the days when we were shooting VistaVision format on film lots of glass was rehoused or just adapted. There's also at least 3 new lens options I know of on their way that will cover this format.

At the moment I'm leaning heavy on Zeiss and Schneider for much of my "motion designed" glass needs and luckily I like what both companies are making. Though I have sets of several of these other options ready to go. Vintage looks at 8K are going to be fun.

I've been using the CZ.2's on Dragon and loving it.
