My friend James Niehouse ("Hubble 3D") is in Texas right now testing all the latest cameras for an upcoming IMAX project. This is camera porn at its finest. Feast your eyes! :drool5:

That Alexa M is so funny.

At first you think — "wow, that's so small, just like Epic", then you looking down following the cord and "OMG, what the hell is that?"

The tops in digital cinema right now. F65, IMAX(hehe), Phantom, Alexa, C300, and Epic. Would love to see the results.

Nice

Well, this shows that your buddy James, not having the knowledge of the best camera, is trying it for himself, exactly what I have always telling people to do... Good on him... My take is that He will sure not choose Alexa, nor will He choose IMAX monster camera either... ;)

Epic or Sony F65...

My tough exactly... ;)

It is so nice to be a Scarlet owner, ducking beneath all these price points. It allows you to realize that the Alexa, F65 etc are all incredible cameras, each with strengths and weaknesses that may suit a particular project, all while owning the sensor good enough for Fincher, Jackson and Ridley Scott.

I would of course love to test all these side-by-side. And go right back to Scarlet-X 436.

...We'll see if they hide that part under the counter at NAB. Hehe. ;)

Dustin... if you shoot documentary... perhaps you need a camera that can record constantly, for weeks, without generating 4 terabytes of data per camera, per day... perhaps you understand that if you use IMAX, F65 or Epic for your transcendent moments and C300 for your interviews and verité footage, the contrast will make each feel stronger, more alive... perhaps the crew plans extreme low light exposures, perhaps multiple bodies with replaceable Canon glass would allow them to take the risks their shot ideas call for...

The most interesting part about documentary work, and new media work in general, is that the mentality of "choose a camera, a stock, a lens package" is turned on its head. Throw a whirlwind of options into the mix and see what comes out. Variation becomes more interesting then stagnation. Maybe it works for narrative--"did you like 127 hours? no?"--maybe it doesn't. For IMAX documentary, I'm willing to bet it does.

Now my keyboard is sticky for some reason....
