  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bausch&Lomb CinemaScope Baltars.

Focus breathing I don't worry much about. It can be completely eliminated in post and very rarely that focus is pulled from infinite to near limit in one quick pull like that.

Thanks for responding. Yeah, I just assumed you showed the focus breathing for demonstrational purposes only, and would never use a focus pull like that in a professional environment.

Looks really cool in some kind of Technicolor kind of way. The cars and street signs kind of ruins it or it would have looked just perfect from way back when this glas was new. Have to swap the 911 for something more time matched. :)

It kind of does have a Technicolor vibe to it now that you mentioned it. And Yeah, you might need to buy a more vintage Porche, you can send the 911 to me and buy one or all 4 of these.

I'm going to redo the main title with "Red Monstro VV and Bausch & Lomb Cinemascope Baltars" and the ending titles. I'm re-encoding and then re uploading it to wetransfer. I just couldn't leave it with an incorrect opening title.

What was up with the guy on the bike parking in front of you in the last few seconds in the night scene? For all he knew you could have been shooting a night scene for a multi-million dollar film. "Dude.. get the fuck out the way!"

My Cats need to practice on their acting skills and stay on their tape marks. I totally blame them for not staying in focus while I was trying to carry this 75mm bazooka around and trying to pull focus. Really need to build a proper shoulder rig for these lenses. Holding camera with one hand pulling focus with the other does not fly so well.

But I really like how creamy this 75mm gets wide open.

You did a pretty good job of maintaining relative focus considering the subject. This 75mm looks reasonably sharp when you take into account that it's on a greater than Full Frame sensor and it's shot wide open. Did you use any post sharpening ?

No post sharpening, more to see just what the lens gives. But yes there is a tiny field of focus in there that is actually quite sharp. But f5.6 or such is probably a better choice for most situations. I like how it really covers 8k ANA no vingette what so ever.
 
Here is an example of Bausch & Lomb "Super" Baltars , I believed they were last made in the 1960's from the 1930's. These are Spherical non anamorphic lenses.

Yes, I used to have a full set that was originally in BNC-R. I bought it for 1.500USD back in 2004. Then I converted them to PL sometime around 2010 and sold them shortly after for something like 15000USD. I remember I was feeling guilt about selling them to a DP in Norway for such high amount... Today they often go for something like 100.000 USD :)

They are really nice but the original build quality is not so good and they where only design for academy, the wides are not really covering S35.

The Cinemascopes are made from the Baltars not the super baltars and made with a wider image circle to cover full S35 in ANA. As i understand B&L wanted to create a anamorphic standard with the sound outside the perf on the projected positive and use the full width for image. But that did not fly so well among the theaters so lots of B&L Cinemascope filmes where cut of on the left hand side to leave room for a sound track. The bridge over the river kwai is often seen with the titles slightly to the left for that reason. Even though I think netflix now have a full copy of the film. Well worth a watch just for the image qualities alone I think.

I think also the baltar lenses will really go up in price. even if they are a bit slower than the super baltars they are really good looking glas and people start to rehouse them now.
