  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bausch&Lomb CinemaScope Baltars.

Wow!
I want to see footage from the 100mm ?

How are yours in terms of fungus ?

Will hopfully film some with the 100mm tomorrow morning when running by the metal shop. It has some fungus on the front elements but nothing that can not be cleaned off. I doubt it shows in picture.

Manage to run by the metal shop this morning. 4 lenses done so far. All except the 35mm that has ha slightly different side back element and mount than the others so those need a little different mod, but should not be much trouble just need to make finer threads on the back of it as the metal tubing is thinner.

But these 4 girls looks pretty smashing if you ask me :)

Some very random an ill framed pictures from this quick visit. Lenses are still to be fixated in roll and collimated properly we are down to quite small measurements now but need to by proper shims to get it down to 0.01mm. now I´m in steps of 0.4mm which is far to much.

This is me trying t carry around the 100mm and pull some focus... again not properly collimated and not lovely but you get the idea.

focus pull with the optical mumps corrected 100mm. Still not collimated correctly...

Lens suport done. Bought a tilta 19mm lens suport and thought I just could use it if I added a mount point on the actual lenses. But it turned out that the standard height for lens suport was to high. So decided to make this bit that that its lower but can take all the small bits from the Tilta support so now it´s going to be black anodize together with the focus wheels and other bits.

Will also make lens caps for those that miss such and then have them all anodized black as well.

Whats left to do is the back filter holders and the PL mounts for the 35mm lenses, those have a somewhat different back then the others and will be far more tricky to mod to PL than the others. I think there needs to be a whole new back housing on them to make it work. which is nothing impossible as it´s just a cylinder milling. The trick thing will be to fit a good way to shim them and get them collimated easily. as the back optical element is far more closer to the sensor on these than the rest of the bunch and they also have a wider diameter on those elements so does not leave much room to build a sturdy enough mount if not going really creative about it. I think we got solutions for it but needs to be tested, it´s how we rolled on these, trying not to do it to mathematically, but instead move slow in baby steps and test what fits and what does not. Worked very well I must say, some of the stuff when way faster than I ever expected it would do. Big thanks to Anders Noren who does all this stuff without CNC machines or even drawings, Simply put his ability to shape things as we go has been whats makes it possible, not too many people can do these things by "hand" any more.

This is awesome Bjorn! I looked through everything and I don't think I saw you shine any bright source into the glass yet. Would to see a harsh flare!

man i love seeing these come to life

So is there any working sets of these in existence or are you going to have the only one?

The 50mm back in action after possibly 60 years rest.

This is not really a straight development, run it trough flame on set as a previz for the client in what direction their 50´s look would go:

This one is only trough red cine with straight IPP2 process and some alchemy and grain. Also the 50mm.
PastedGraphic-3 by Björn Benckert, on Flickr

Same with this, Not the supposed look but a very good base to get where we aimed, for some sort of early 50´s look.

Shot with both the 100mm and the 50mm all day. And even when not getting it half right it´s looks freaking beautiful I think. Maybe I´m biased from fiddling with this for over a month now but they are looking far more promising than I though they would, really need to control the light or they flare and glare all over the pace and both lenses has quite a bit of dust inside (mad amount on the 50mm which we used the most). So I think a good rinsing of them and possibly I will recoat one of the sets with more modern coating would be a great compliment to the originals which have a bit of crazy flare/glare sensitivity which looks really good but some times it difficult to convince every one else thats the case :)

Here is a FF on old scarlet with the 100mm no further processing thant IPP2 in red cine. Its a bit motion blur in there, but still. To me it looks like a fine painting straight of the mag :)

The 35mm in the late afternoon sun. Love this one. Got some dust in there that becomes quite obvious when closing down but nothing that can not be cleaned away. This one was a bitch to PL mount but now we solved it cool thing is we managed to make it just like the other so they can be easily re collimated within seconds on set. Got a stack of 0.01mm shims so when having the filter back it should be possible to even shim them right per filter if wanted. But aim is to have a clear glas and then then a set of ND with all the same braking index. So the clear glas can be used just to keep collimation the same.

There is for sure more beautiful things to shot then the street out side the office but simply have no time to run off, got home from NY last night and have to Finnish a bunch of stuff. But tomorrow and 2 weeks forward I will be on a shoot in paris So planing to put atleast one or two of these in my luggage. So next test will have the Effel tower or such n frame instead of my shitty street corner :)

The 35mm is more than a bit dusty, so blooming a bit more than it should I think. here 35mm flared.

Funny side note. Shot number one banking super model on the Forbes list Andriana Lima with this lens...

As the client liked the fogy "stardust look" look when I first set up the camera I figured I dont even clean off the front, fat full handplant and finger prints all over it and aluminum saw dust inside, was recipe to success :)

75mm FF @ f5.6.

Trying to shim it more accurate in my hotel room in paris. Nice to have a little "french balcony" to test from to hit infinite. It´s getting closer. This one feels really good. Very cool that it covers the full sensor, thats promising for VV. Click to see in better resolution.

Same view slightly later with the 35mm. This one needs better back focusing. And got more dust inside. A bit foggy to say the least. But still this one screams potential I think when it´s cleaned and tack sharp / collimated correctly it´s going to be one 35mm thats tough to beat when it comes to character.

Also a very imprortant note. See, it´s almost covering the whole Helium sensor. Just a small fraction that not expose at the edges. And the falloff is not bad. Far better than the 35mm hawk for example.

Now I think I got the 75 and the 35 in good alignment. Or good enough to send them of to have them cleaned. Still filled with grease, some fungus and lot of dust. Still this 35mm even in it´s current poor shape I find amazing. ignore my focusing skills on this one, think I had it set to 7 feet all the way trough.

And yes forgot to black shade the camera after an upgrade so a bit of frozen noise patterns in there, but download this and look at it in 5k or what ever I kicked out for the prores. I sat here and look at it like 50 times just amazed. Think i got the cinemascope fever :)

And here is a snap from the 75mm in my office I think that was at f4 with helium FF @ x2

Love this frame, it´s from 4k scarlet X with the 100mm no further processing than IPP2 and RCXP sharpness and grain.

And here is a 35mm daylight short shutter and panning with the car. Like the halo on the sky, it goes nuts when har light hits into the lens, love it, but might be a bit to much love at times.

Took the 35mm for a test drive. Now collimated correctly but still not cleaned. Love what it does to the evening light. I now consider the two 35mm mechanically done, got the backfilter array done for them but need to cut filters to size. So this was partly shot with extreme short shutters like 2-3 deg and such as I simply dont have any ND´s that fit the front.

Question when adding glas behind lens am I thinking that the lens then need more shimming? As thats what I plan to do I just want to make sure I have removed enough material for the PL mounts. So when I start to make the filters I can simply just make shims to fit, or?

Bjorn, I think you don't necessarily HAVE to adjust shims for the use of a rear glass filter. This is not necessarily expected to be solved at the lens level, rather, the back focus of the camera, and in our day and age, the sensor. Certainly on a Red camera, this adjustment is quick and easy and can be done in the field. Shimming a lens without a collimator isn't really all that practical in the field. So I say, providing the threaded mounting point and the custom filters is enough.

Just my $.02
