  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Battery powered Router with foolcontrol?

Could not find the detailled specs but very slim chance it'll work...

Camera ethernet requires a 'GIG-E' connection and this router will most probably only be 10/100.

Foolcontrol uses very little bandwithbug camera can only connect to 1000 networks....

Search RU for posts from Syndicate, they have this figured out in a much smaller package then what you've found. Maybe you can entice Bjorn to make a few. Not sure anyone wants to get to involved in tinkering until after this NAB though.

My pro tip is that if you find the smallest Gigabit switch you can and strap it to your access point, it solves the 1000Base-T problem. I'm in the process of creating a little pack of network gear that will be mountable to a rig and powered by a D-tap.

I just had a nutty thought. Anyone tried attaching a USB Gigabit adapter to one of those little "4G" travel modems' USB ports? They should recognize the device and configure it vaguely. At worst you would have to hack the firmware and ssh into the linux session to change the behavior from wlan to Eth1. But linux might be smart enough based on their netconfig settings.

yes a router + a GIG-E switch would work fine.

Andrew, please keep us in the loop of what you came up with :)

I may be wrong but it looks like this device is a POE (power over ethernet) splitter to get some voltage out at the end of an ethernet line for security camera etc... not sure it does any wifi bridge or can acts as a 100/1000 switch, it will just split out power while transmitting the GIG-E signal...

what andrew said! Yes.

Jensen, 5 port 10/100/1000 switch, 12V (standard 12v plug), 12V to D-tap adapter cable, plug in i battery-operated Wifi hotsopt, good to go.
Model no: NL1005v3

uhh, I couldnt find a link online, picked it from my local electro-store. It has metal enclosure so it can take a beating.
Normally I use the Red-link developer kit, but just for cases where I need the connections on the back of the camera I keep this in the bag.

Please keep us updated, I would love to see what you've got.

On another note:
Do you think RED could adjust the connection requirement from 1000 to 10/100 with firmware?
That would open a lot of doors for sure. Mikael you seem to have a say with RED- Can you ask them to do that?
Or maybe this is hardware limited...???

I do not know... I do not have the network hardware knowledge but I'll ask them at NAB.

Port is engraved as GIG-E on the camera, doesn't mean it cannot be changed via firmware but I would not hold my breath on this...

the port is also used for multi camera sync (3D and VR setup) and upcoming tethered mode that will require GIG-E specs anyway.

I am sure small GIG-E / 5Ghz routers or small battery powered switch exists somewhere or will appear fairly soon... until RED goes to 10-GIG ethernet :-D

Why not 10/100/1000 compatibility?
!G is not needed for your app and it would just work slower with 100Mb for data transfers- it's not like it would stop working...
Besides when you are on location you have to go WiFi eventually and WiFi rarely goes more than 100Mb realistically.
This would broaden the SDK use and your app use so much- I think you are to benefit the most from it...
See what you can find out and let us know here. Or maybe Trent is monitoring this thread ... TRENT, TRENT, TRENT.....

yes 10/100/1000 would work just fine for linking cameras and for RCP apps, that is very low bandwidth

R3D tether (which I imagine is what the port originally was created for, with CTRL RS232 more suited toward camera control applications) does require high speed for recording R3D externally (already at a limited framerate / REDCode)

The camera hardware only supports 1Gig Ethernet.

That takes care of that- thanks Trent for the quick response!
I guess we have to wait for 5G travel modems ;-)
