  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Balance...

EDIT: Just noticed the addition of what look like ducted 40mm fans on the front of each epic below the lens mount. Those weren't there before, were they?

Look at this older picture it looks like the top one has the same fan mounted to it. However, can't really see it on the lower one.

Quite. I would have to guess its an intake fan, pushing air through the intakes we've already seen. I wonder if this factors into the recently announced increased size of Epic? Wild speculations!

Edit: It also looks like the concerns of only having one bottom mounting hole have been addressed as well. Hooray.

I'm guessing that epic is designed for heat rising out of the top to suck cool air in through the front vent. Since the brain is inverted, it can't function in that way and needs an extra little boost.

I'm also guessing that since most of us won't be running the cameras inverted for long periods of time, it won't be a problem.

EDIT: and if that's the case, would making the internal fan reversible help with the cooling?

I think you are correct.

I'm pretty sure that Epic will work like the Red One, in that the fan will run until recording is started. Once recording starts, the fans turn off, to keep the audio guys from making the jokes they did when a firestore was in use. Unlike the Red One, Epic is a better design. Because of the top opening, heat will rise out, and draw cool air in the front by the process of thermal convection.

If this is wrong, please correct me.
I'd hate to have a guess repeated as fact.
There is plenty of that going on already!

BTW... This is recording stereo at 5K@48fps.... one RED BRICK was running both cameras plus the rig for quite along time :)

That's not balance, that's a chest pad.

If you want something properly balanced then you don't want a chest pad supporting the weight.

It needs to sit there without support!

Like which rig Geoff?

You obviously haven't met Jarred yet. He's so tall, he literally has *minutes* to catch it if it were to fall.

But can someone explain the tiny IO distance to me? Shooting macro?

Modest 3D effect... not every shot needs to have a hand in your lap.
