  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Balance...

Wow, now that is very impressive! Especially when you compare it to this "balanced" rig:

Keep up the great work.

Oh, and by the way- there are THREE batteries powering that unit- not one ... ;)

Jarred, I'm available to pose in photographs next to you to make you look normal. ;)

With CAPTAIN AMERICA, Joe Johnston investigated native 3D briefly but decided against it...--

(From LATimes): Johnston did a one-day test shooting with a 3-D rig -- as opposed to shooting in 3-D and converting -- and said it was "a nightmare" due to bulky gear, calibration issues and restricted filmmaking options.
I doubt he tested the rig Jarred is holding or errrr..... not holding.

Modest 3D effect... not every shot needs to have a hand in your lap.

Jim

I don't know much about 3D, but wouldn't it seem natural to have the same length between the center of the lenses, as the average length between the human eyes?

(I know this would cause a problem with closeups, but I assume you are talking about a "modest" 3D effect in general, couldn't that strain the eyes?)

...I am curious about the small fan above the lens of the upper camera, any hints about its purpose? Just a generic cooling fan?

Keeping gnats away? Could be essential for summer-time outdoor work in many areas.

Outrageously neat setup, it seems. Congratulations.

Maybe already asked and answered: This setup includes power for 2 cameras? Motorized lenses, no extra motors needed? Recording media onboard? And total weight is, what, 30 pounds?

Pirates 4 3D has been shooting for about a month on RED ONE M-X with Pace rigs.

I found out about the show being shot on 15 RED 3D rigs through Panavision. From the same guy with whom I had a "heated" discussion about 2K not being future-proof.

My point was that there will be a period in film's history - from 2000s through I hope any year now - where some films will only exist in 2K. Even films like 2001 - A Space Odyssey will be bumped up to more than 4K when there'll be a home video market that will support it. It's sad to think that the most recent Star Wars trilogy and all other 2K movies will look then like SD looks to us now...

Anyway, the guy told me with a good sense of humor that after our whole discussion he got word of the RED order. It's a victory for you company and after I defended your cameras, it was sort of a victory for me too!

What are these 'most recent' Star Wars movies of which you speak?

I only acknowledge the original trilogy which, thankfully, will be able to live long into the future.

Can you imagine how much work it would be to go back through a movie like Pirates of the Carribean or Star Wars and redo all the VFX? Maybe it'll be easy in 2020 when they are rereleasing in 4k. But I doubt it.

I think VFX, not aquisition resolution will be the reason for things sticking around in 2k.

It would probably cost 1/4 of the budget of the original film to 're-render' it. So even if the new Pirates is shot on RED but finished in 2k, I would suspect it wouldn't be much higher on the priority list of films to re-master.
