  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

avid mxf red workflow

uhhh... one moment please

uhhh... one moment please

jamie,

love the idea of what you're doing. i d/l'ed jamfuze... have redalert and media composer installed. i THOUGHT i was doing things correctly but no joy. nothing.

dialogs keep saying 'access denied'. some sort of permission thing i suppose?

any idea?

oh... btw... there doesn't seem to be a 'choose' button for selecting the /mxf/1 folder

and yeah... i'd send you the 30 quid for it

one moment.....maybe two

one moment.....maybe two

hi david
30 quid? are you an englishman in new yorrrrk (as sting would say)
anyway access denied. my god that sounds serious!
put jamfuze on the desktop not in a folder and don't rename it...
that might do it
go to
www.jamieparry.demon.co.uk
again. new info may help.
this is what we've tested so far
intel mac
red alert 3.6
new dnxhd codecs
quicktime 7.5.5
os x 10.5.5
administrator account (not thought of that one till now)

don't have any spaces in the names of things for now (it seems to be the jamfuze killer)
i haven't got to the page in "unix for welsh people" that fixes it!
cheers for trying though! keep at it! tally ho and cymru am byth go redsox etc etc

avid media folder

avid media folder

oh yeah avid media folder thingy
you have to type it in for now
it was designed for me really so i made mine the default in the gui file
there is an explanation how to do this on the website
www.jamieparry.demon.co.uk
i'll add a button if enough people are flummoxed by it...
don't worry it's only computers.
when the red one achieves sentience then we'll have to worry.
j

true on both counts.

1. no option to choose the one rsx to rule them all....

2. we need a selectable menu guide to get to the avid media folder thingy if possible.

things are looking good on this, and moving along nicely i think. should be a valuable program for many....

Jamie,

Nice job so far. Everything seems to work except for one thing: All of the files I'm generating seem to be black and white, as if Saturation is defaulting to 0. Has anyone else found this to be the case?

hey mike. this is a feature only on the demo currently available....the beta test version. it is something that will not be the case in the release version.....

mike, in your opinion, is DNxHD36 at fit height the parameters that are most commonly used for TV clients?

any additional needs that you find i am sure would be welcome by jamie as he has been great at adding some features as requested.......and your opinion is highly regarded in these parts....

mike, in your opinion, is DNxHD36 at fit height the parameters that are most commonly used for TV clients?

DNxHD36 is commonly used if the production is specifically using an offline/online work path. This is almost always the case on a feature, where the "online" is a DI. It is not always the case on a television series. There are at least 2 (probably more, but 2 that I know of) television series that are going to DNx115 for editorial and using it directly for final picture, with no separate online. I don't necessarily condone this kind of "good enough" approach, but it is being done, and by network shows whose names you'd definitely recognize. And not necessarily with the highest quality debayer, either.

As for additional features:
1. Have an "expert" mode to customize some of the Redline settings - for instance, filter setting, burnin customization (font size and position would be useful), and processors.
2. Allow for generation of an ALE (this is also a Redline option). This would theoretically allow you to generate all your MXF's, then open Avid, create a new bin, import the ALE, and relink. This would both avoid having to use the Media Tool and allow for more information in the bin (color settings, etc.) that could prove useful in offline/online work flows.

I haven't really looked at the "online" stuff yet, in part because I don't have MC on my home machine. But I will.

One more thought - and I hesitate to suggest this because I don't want to lead Jamie one way or the other. But here it is anyway: Get in touch with Hans-Georg Daun (who writes Clipfinder) and see if there's any way for you two to work together. As I said, I hesitate to suggest this because Hans has clearly decided to make his program freely available, and although that is very nice for the community, I do believe in being paid for one's good work. So his decision shouldn't have any bearing on Jamie's. But the truth is that Hans has already done some very good development in terms of an interface that allows for an integrated browsing, clip selection, file generation, and original source conforming environment. He's even added multi-machine rendering via an output watch folder system. The addition of full Avid MXF support in his environment would be compelling. It might even make him reconsider his "give it away" stance...

thanks mike. those are some good ideas. i particularly like the one where jamie combines his end of things with something like clipfinder. i think jamfuze is great, but needs a few more options to make it more a multi-purpose tool. what he has (the native mxf thing) combined with what others have done (good interfaces, more options) would be amazing.

for the record, i agree with all your suggestions, and i think it would be great to have more DNxHD options outside of 36 in the offline mode.

stuff

hello
yep the demo that's up does BLACK and WHITE only.
that was because i was/am too stupid to do a limited time trial version of the real thing but i think i might have sorted that out now.
again we'll wait for my beta tester to tell me its OK and if it is the downloadable demo will be fully functional but run out of juice in a few days or so.
something like that. but i know how easy it is to defeat such schemes so i'm wary of releasing it like that.
anywayyyy
the newer demo is ready for download on
www.jamieparry.demon.co.uk
this lets the offline be in color and lets you choose the rsx (for 1 rsx to rule them all) and has a button to choose the avid media folder.
the online bit will still be black and white but that's ok for a demo right?

as for more options on the dnxhd encoding front that's easy to do but would it still be an offline/online product then?
i think the reason most people are cutting at 115 is because doing offline/online on AVID with red was too much hassle before. Now with Jamfuze it isn't really (if i can do it anyone can!)
but I can't argue with Mike really i just can't. 115 it is.
so in the jamfuze offline bit there will be an option to choose dnx36 or dnx115.

I've already said here how cool clipfinder is and i also mentioned about giving what i had done to the monkey extract boys (or anyone else) no one took me up on it. so i did jamfuze myself for myself.
If i get a few sales from jamfuze as it stands i will PAY hans to do the gui goodness he does so well and roll it into the product as quick as i can.
I am scared to talk to hans because as you've probably gathered by now i am an idiot colourist NOT a programmer and he would probably lose me in 1 second flat!
but i'd love my little jamfuze to look as good as clipfinder....
go download the demo and try it out people.
i'll do the dnx 115 now.

ok... ok... ok

this is bloody brilliant!

yeah... you SAID put it on the desktop, but did i listen?... no.

you SAID no spaces in the path names, but did i listen?... no.

it IS amazing what you can do when you READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!

btw... my system has quicktime 7.6 and mac osX 10.5.6, so you know that works too.

now... as far as being an ex-pat? uhhh... no. born & bred new yawker.

but i've done enough drinking... uhhh.... TRAVELING in the UK that i figured that if you could post in US$, the least i could do would be to reply in sterling.

cheers.

david

woo hoo new yawk new yawk so good etc etc

woo hoo new yawk new yawk so good etc etc

great news david
thanks for the system info as well that helps me make a list of working systems.
if you can bear the excitement there is a new version of the demo up
www.jamieparry.demon.co.uk
which gives you color in the offline bit (still b/w online) these are time limited demos and i can't remember how much time they've go left to work! so try it quick!!!
it will also do dnx115 in the "offline" bit as per mmost's request.
auto recognizing audio is done (woo hoo) but not in the demo that you can have yet. (awwww)
cheers and keep talking to me it's nice to have new friends so far away.
a few more positives saying it works and it'll be available to buy fully functional and it'll make the tea/quoffee.
j

jamie,
the demo wont let me resize the main window and is falling way below the bottom edge of my screen. is anyone else having that problem? its not letting me complete the checklist and continue.

screen size??

screen size??

hey jason
what screen resolution are you working in?
i was in 1920x1200 so it all fits in that.
i had not thought of the screen estate challenged....
i will try and make the gui widescreen!
tell me what res your screen is and i'll have a go at that later.
j

jamie,

so... testing with this morning's build...

running from desktop... NOT mandatory.

even though i asked the program to move the .mxf files into the Avid Mediafiles/MXF/1 folder... it DIDN'T do it (tested twice).

color in offline... brilliant!

dnxhd 115 option... brilliant!

.ale file... that WOULD be a good idea.

as far as if dnxhd 115 is 'good enough' for broadcast... i would say 115 IS good enough if your end product is gonna be SD (yes... SOME projects STILL finish in SD), if you're ending up in HD, i would want it to be dnxhd175.

so... since you already added the 115 option to the 'offline' jamfuze... could you add 175 as well?

then those of us working in tv wouldn't really need the 'online' version (except of course for the color grading conform)

as far as the 'online' version goes... i've done SOME playing around and have an observation...

since most projects shoot a LOT of cards, and since most drives are supplied with the files sorted by card, having only one path for the program to look for the .r3d's is kinda limiting.

it means that you have to put ALL of your .RDC folders into one folder.

so... WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE to have the program search subdirectories for the r3d files (as long as there are no spaces or odd characters)?

that's all for today...gotta do some paying stuff.

cheers.

david
