  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

avid mxf red workflow

mark
the .mov files are way easier to deal with on a mac. you don't need to have an avid on the machine that JamFuze is on so it could be a quick check to see if you're getting what you think you're getting.
viewing .mxf files is tricky without the Avid application
the quicktimes can also be used in other ffmpeg trickery like making h264 files really quick and.....other stuff i ain't thought of.
to some though...they'll always be a waste of space.

cheers for the beer that was good!

GREAT work jamie. i am loving this progression.

A couple of things.....

What happens if there are 2K, 3K and 4K files in the folder being processed? How does the fit height affect these? I am assuming it would be fine.

But....what about the 'framing' of the dailies when the camera shoots 2:1 vs. 16:9 vs 4K HD mode as a project base? Again, would be GREAT to have a pulldown menu there that has all these variations as options.

Eg. 'fit height for 2:1'; 'fit height for 16:9'; 'fit width for 2:1', etc. etc.

This is looking VERY VERY good. Could be a super useful tool. I am looking forward to your tests of the variable speed clips.

Please also double check and make sure these conform as the timecode on high speed footage (time-of-day) can be duplicated if you shoot high speed quickly. Different clip names however so the conform should be fine.

about the 2k,3k 4k thing the short answer is....dunno!
The fit-height option will only crop the sides off the 2:1 image and TOTALLY leave the 16x9 one alone as it already fits the height to 1920x1080 (i have used 2:1 and 16x9 in my tests and this seemed to be the case but they were all 4k shots)
I'm guessing the only thing of any note for the 3k or 2k originals is to bump up the debayer quality a bit because you're not starting out with as much info.
half debayer of 4k is still more than HD, half debayer of 2k= less than HD so i'd need to bump up to full debayer for 2k images maybe.Discuss.but remember it's for telly and we don't want it perfect we want it FINISHED.
Quite how the program would know it has a 2k image in front of it I don't know.Is that in a metadata thing that i can get at? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
Too many options may make it a bit unwieldy but if that's what loads of people want i'll try my best! then i'll do an idiots version for myself!
Thanks for the heads up on the conform of high speed stuff-if they have different clip names it should be okay....where's the smiley for fingers crossed???
As I say high speed RED is new to me.
I've only ever dealt with the Phantom camera at high speed which ROCKS!

nice one

nice one

Hi Jamie,

nice one indeed. Let me know next time you are in town... we are now at 28 Margaret street - it would be great to catch up.
In regards to ConFuze(tm) - I do like the mxf bit a lot. Also I am impressed with the idea of extracting time-codes by writing only the value of the first frame. I would seriously consider it for avid workflow but only the offline side. We do go for feature film work and HD half debayer renders in 8 bit have similar resolution to HDV files so we try to go to at least full 2K dpx in 10 bit log.
BTW we have diched our Scratch. Originally it has promised a lot but in reality it didn't give sufficient real-time performance to justify the price. Also with no render farm support it was pretty slow option.
We have found everything we need from Speedgrade DI and MetaRender from Iridas. But this is whole new subject.
In any case our cluster of 6 Macpro and Confuze we could be generating Avid dailies in no time at all without a fear that edit assistant has missed crucial settings on the ALE or similar...

Later...

Hey Dado
Iridas stuff is really nice. i remember looking at framecycler a bit ago and loved it.
Patrick was also v helpful when i rang.
The reason for my reply to you today is because i made some dpx files out of JamFuze by accident today! (calling it ConFuze got confusing when i was talking about it to people at work!)
so maybe it wouldn't be so hard to do a Mytherapy special edition with go faster stripes!
cheers

Hello Jamie,
I have been through all these discution and something you said caught my attention...you are a colourist working with baselight. Well I read that baselight work with R3D files as well as it is possible to import AFE from avid into that system.
Could tell me more about it or direct me towards a competent person. Thanks

Hi Francois
you misunderstood I'm afraid. I work with a davinci 2k+ system but have looked at baselight for its integration with avid when we move to a more file based infrastructure.
the best i can give you is
Arthur at
+44 (0)20 7292 0402
who will either know or will know who to ask.
whether he's competent is anyone's guess! He's always seemed like a good man to me!
good luck
jamie

Thank you for the infos. Although now I have finish the feature on which I worked, I am very interested about teh development of the JamFuze. How can it be available? or do we have to send you a mail when we need this soft?
Thanks
Francois

hello all
i will be sending out a demo version today to my SECRET BETA TESTER(tm) and if that goes OK the demo will be available to download from a website somewhere soon.
My boss is OK with me releasing it for 23.98 people so that is all i'm doing in the release software so far. No 25fps at the moment.
If all is well with the test and the demo then i'll put a paypal link on the "secret website somewhere" and you'll be able to get the fully tested thing if you want it.
i've decided to price it between metafuze ($0) and monkey extract ($349) but my maths is rubbish and that came out to $49. let me know. no one has to buy it of course but hey $49 for making life easy???
you will be able to buy once and anything i do to update you'll get it and you can use it on as many machines as you like! go crazy!
cheers

jamfuze news -hey that rhymes!

jamfuze news -hey that rhymes!

as of this morning here in UK land
the offline section has been tested and working somewhere in 23.98 land on an "ordinary mac" and works! woo hoo! so no complicated ffmpeg or anything installs needed.
you do need:
red alert 3.6
the latest avid dnxhd codecs from avid.com/red

the online pull bit news hasn't reached me yet.....

also the 10bit dnxhd codecs now work. So for the "pull online" you can choose 175x for all your 10 bit needs.

Currently JamFuze does everything in one "lump"
ie it redlines every r3d to a .mov
then ffmpegs ever mov to .dnx
then writeavidmxfs all .dnx to .mxf

i'm working on a version (it's pretty much done) where it does things one at a time so your first mxf file will be ready loads sooner and then more will just "dribble out" 1 at a time (ewwww that sounds nasty)
this will also auto detect audio (and will encode to avid audio automatically)
and auto detect the size of the image (4k 3k or 2k) and adjust the debayer quality accordingly.
for 4k i think for a 1080 finished product with no heavy keying needed half normal seems good.
for 2k however i think a full debayer may be required to get the same detail out to 1080?
let me know what you all think. this is new to me.
j

Jamie, you're an angel in Red world!

2K full debayer seems good, I might also say the same for 3K, but an option for this could be welcome
also the possibility to chose the quality of the DNxHD encoding

Good luck with the coding,

Cheers,

Arno

Good News from the 'Fuze

Good News from the 'Fuze

hello
right word on the street is that ALL bits of JamFuze work on the Beta Testers machine.
this is the "demo that only does black and white and only in 23.98" version
hoorah!
so
make sure you have an intel mac with os 10.5
go get red alert 3.6
go get dnxhd codecs from avid.com/red
go get the 16 char edl template from avid.com/red
install all bits and restart
go get jamfuze demo from

http://www.jamieparry.demon.co.uk/

this is the version that has been tested and works.

it's just getting ready for the 2 people who might want it.
cheers

full version jamFuze

full version jamFuze

Hi Jason
after i've had word via these forums that the demo has worked for people
then i'll do it.
you will need to paypal some cash then i'll email you a link to the app (or email you the app it's about 6MB for everything).
i want people to demo it first because i reallly don't want to have to be doing software support/lawyer nastiness/giving money back via paypal (mainly cos i don't know how!) if it can be helped.
in June my real job goes crazy busy so jamfuze will be a side project.
so download the demo. see if it works. if it does and you are happy click the link to Paypal and we'll take it from there.
remember i am making this up as i go!!!!!
all the best
j
