  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

avid mxf red workflow

bit of a gui situation

bit of a gui situation

here it is so far
it works
it's not pretty but it works

Metafuze v1.3 does do batch processing. What it does not do is take a pull list (or EDL) and create a new set of media. Right now that is done in DS as part of the conform process.

Michael

MichaelP-cool I didn't know 1.3 was out.
the whole beginning of this was i want metafuze on my mac (and my boss said the DS was too busy to upgrade it to 10.whatever so we'd have to do the show on the symphony)
let me be clear though, if metafuze works on a mac and does the pull list thing i will drop all this nonsense and go back to making girls look pretty on screen!!

please no one shout at me i was only messing about-here is an icon for the app
and i only chose the word because it was the only one i could make with the letters.
a v o i d

apart from davio which i think is already taken or o diva which is nice...

news on the 24 (is that really 23.976?) situation it turns out my bit (aditc) is kind of ok as it only reports back the first frame of the file then quits into the night so i think that'll be ok and it doesn't seem like i put in any reference to the frame rate of the QT in that application....so that was clever of me:)
the problem comes from writeavidmxf which because it was BBC sponsored code writing really only does 25fps by default and 29.97 if you poke it hard but not 23.976 at all.
so i've emailed stuart the writeavidmxf guy who's helped me before and we'll see how it goes.
i may have to "sponsor" him to get it in there but it'll be worth it if he doesn't ask too much! he's very cool so it may be a few days before i hear back from him. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

.....and not having the conform on the back end is okay, as that is not it's purpose....

I think the conform at the end IS the most important thing.
There are several free good solutions to import and edit red material.

But in the end it's so tricky to do the online without buying Monkey Extract or use Avid DS.

So, Jamie when can we use a v o i d :)

we are both agreeing. the conform is the most important thing IF that is what you want.

metafuze does not intend to do this, as DS is AVIDs product to conform RED. Metafuze is only for the front end, so for an AVID shop (who is conforming on DS) it is not important.

hello everyone - some updates
the scripts now do audio (i found an r3d with 1 audio track in it!) the audio gets put in the quicktime at 32bit it is easy for ffmpeg to take it out and make a lower bit depth pcm which writeavidmxf takes in at the same time as your video essence....
so it works basically-straight into the avid mxf/1 folder just like video
next GUI's i've done one for offline with less options but here is the online one with a bit more going on.
it should be ok to get your favourite combos to be the defaults by modifying the little gui text file a bit (don't panic its easy) google "pashua" for details
of the gui thing i've been using
last thing for all you non pal types I had an email from Stuart Cunningham who is one of the maintainers/coders of writeavidmxf and he said doing 23.976 stuff for writeavidmxf is on the "to do" list.
i've asked him if "sponsorship" would bump it up the list alittle and if he replies "yes!" i'll let you know with a paypal link or something!
When that bit is done it'll take me about 10 minutes to write it in and test it out and i'll report back to you all ,probably with an updated screencast thingy.

like i say it all works really well for us PAL types so I hope it goes well at the writeavidmxf end.
question..... would it be good to have each file read the rsx file in its own folder or is it better for ALL files to read one rlx/rsx/whateveritisx
i think i can get it to do either but not sure..and would you want that for offline but not for online- maybe mmost would answer that one?

if i can persuade my boss that we won't lose a massive commercial advantage by giving this to people who are thousands of miles away doing stuff in price brackets i can only dream of then i'll get it to you ASAP
would anyone pay anything for it?
everyone wants software for nothing these days me included! baselight still won't give me the macbook version for nothing damn their eyes!
j

yes having batch and single options are great. otherwise you have shaped this thing up so F'ing fast, it looks really great. i would certainly donate to the writeavidmxf fund and would certainly pay a small sum for this. either way keep us posted and hopefully your boss and stuart are on board as well.

Hi Jamie,

you could sell but even better you could publish it under GNU. There are some people out there that already have the bits that you might need or could write addons etc... This is how all good software starts if there is no solid development team behind it.
In any case I would be happy to pay you for it rather than paying someone else to write the same script for me.

hello
after some more research and biscuits (cookies for americans?) it appears
that i'm unable to get anything more than 8bit dnxhd or uncompressed through writeavidmxf without it being mangled!
i'll obviously email Stuart but for TV types like me (who is used to 8bit HDCam stuff as my main material) does RED going to 8bit max make it unuseable? it doesn't look like it from my brief tests so far but i guess it does help to know that is a limitation albeit one us telly types are already used to.
dado-
haven't you got scratch cine down there in mytherapy?
i thought that would end all requirements for anything like my stuff...
couldn't you just reconform on the scratch from the avid edl with much better quality than the symphony is capable of?
i must say i've never seen it in action so the next time i'm in London (trying to blag a baselight) can I come and see you? that would be ace- colourist gossip.
who's got the blues
who's green with envy
who's red ily available.....
:)
good news for you is you're in the UK so PAL works already!
usual disclaimers can't give it out without asking boss blah blah blah
j

Tom Gough
if it worked?? if it worked??????
why sir you cut me to the very quick.
:)
yep honest it does work for red stuff going through a "mid budget conscious" level of post
ie symphony nitris not DS, probably DNxHD 8 bit media, no cocaine on tap etc etc
for that it's cool
don't ask it to do 16k cineon 3D files with a cappuccino or it'll cry and hide in the corner like a big blouse.
