  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Atomos Blade for Epic

Matthew,

Is the quality too low to justify this purchase for this specific job? Specifically, will the Pro Res be an acceptable quality for the edit? We will be shooting at 48fps if that detail is needed.

I would say it's "fine"
But playing out highspeed clips from the card is far different than recording them on the fly from the SDI out. As the straight out thing is not a r3d compressed signal, it's downscaled straight from the sensor.

So question, is it not possible to set your peroject frame rate to 48p in camera and then set the blade to record the same (if possible). to me that would be the best of both worlds.

I own a Samurai and its a life saver!!! It is great for dailies and jumping right into an editing session, getting the blade for sure!!!

The Atomos Blade just got a bit better. New case options:

When transcoding will it DNxHD or ProRes contorm back to master Red file exactly to the frame? I just sold my PIX 240i because it DOES NOT WORK!!! when conforming back to orginal Redcode files

Since the blade records the SDI signal from the camera it doesnt matter what your project frame rate is, you are limited to the framerate of the SDI.

Whatever you record would play back at the speed ratio of Project_rate/Frame_rate, but would still record at whatever frame rate you set the SDI output to. E.g. Project=24,fps=48, will play back at apparently half speed, same as project=48,fps=96.
Project=48,fps=48 would play back at real time.

A really nice side effect is that you can record 1080p images at the 1K HD frame rates.

Do not know if this been asked here before, just skimmed trough the thread.
Does the blade take the epic trigger trough a teradek bolt?

Jason hooked me up with a DTap (M) to DTap (M) pigtail so that the blade can be powered off a brick. It's curious why Atomos went with such a nonstandard cable and did not provide at least a DTap with flying leads to accompany their DTap adapter.

Also, another good trick with these recorders is to enable lookaround on Scarlet to be able to manually record 1080p files at speed straight off the sensor with the full S35 FOV from your lens, something otherwise impossible to do at 5K when you need a really wide angle for a 1080p finish.

Great Tip Doug!
