  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Atlas Lens Co. - Orion Series 2X Anamorphic Prime Lenses

These look so nice! Wish I had the cash, I'd jump on these!

One thing at 1:32 of that video, either the actor has never ridden a motorcycle before or the director chose to ignore how push steering works for artistic reasons (maybe the character had never ridden and wants to ride - I suppose that would work) . As someone who rides, this stood out right away. As someone who rides, this video made me want to go and ride! Great work, the cinematography is stellar.

We have been looking at these lenses from the beginning wondering what the catch is... as owners and users of great cine glass we have never really found a product that defies financial logic. These seem to?.. how are these guys able to make these? Cyclinders are hard and expensive... where are the shortcuts?... they have cams as well... are they projecting such big sales that they can run with lower margins?

Will I be able to service these at my local cinema glass service shop?

Thanks

M

The rider is a professional stuntperson, and chose to do this.

It’s like motorcycle drifting as I understand it. Scares the hell out of me.

Oh, okay, so the rider is the same guy as the character with the toy bike then? I was referring to the guy with the toy bike. The rider definitely looks like he/she knows what they're doing, heh heh.

If you have the 40mm , would the 32mm be necessary ????

Absolutely.

On the wide end even a millimeter or two can change the feeling of a shot. Remember, you're dealing with 2X anamorphics. These are 16mm and 20mm effective horizontal FoV.

But even if they were sphericals, the difference between 32mm and 40mm is enough to make a noticeable difference. Especially so when moving the camera. It might not change your composition that much, but the speed of motion is noticeable.

You can use that as a creative tool in your work. For example, you might be doing some dolly in or something and be thinking to yourself, "You know what, this just isn't having the impact I want" and you can go wider and sell the dolly move more. Or you might have the opposite experience and think, "this is too intense of a push in for this scene", and you can flatten it out a little with the 40mm.

I guess it depends on how you shoot. Here's how I see it, with the full six lens set, you have three pairs of lenses: a wide wide and a long wide, a wide normal a long normal, a wide telephoto and a long telephoto. So for any given shot I'd probably pick a focal length for framing reasons. And then, like the above example, I might dial in the feeling of the motion with a step up or a step down from any given lens.

That's funny the first time I found out about "push steering " was when my wife was taking a riding course for her license. I was in my mid 30's and had been riding a motor bike for 25 years by then. I guess when you learn as a kid you just do it naturally and never think twice about it... BTW when I was a kid and played with toy bikes I remember doing exactly what he was doing. Takes me back just like that...
That turn in slide is absolutely insane in slow motion. It takes a great deal of skill and balls to do that...

Hi All,

Did anyone receive the Set A and tested these marvels? Please share your experience.
From the demo videos, focus breathing was quite noticeable... is it in the acceptable range!

Thanks

Yesterday shot the 40, 65, and 100. If you like anamorphic u will love these. Lots of character. Just beautiful. Love the 40 on open gate Alexa. Heck I love em all, they all shine but the 40 at 2.66 aspect ratio is awesome

If you preordered you will be happy

I ran all the lenses w no support on the Alexa mini, even the 100, they are lighter that they appear.

I was using pre-production models

Will play more today....

How about the focus breathing? Let’s say if you go down to T4-T7 range !

In the below video link, from 0:42 to 1:15 timeline... I can notice the focus breathing. But it was shot at T2.

What do you guys think would make the best set (assuming we can afford both A & B set.

32mm, 40mm, 65mm & 100mm or
32mm, 40mm, 65mm & 80mm

I'd personally go with the 100mm, you'll have a lot more variety in shot options. Also they cover FF/VV so if you're renting them or using a VV sensor you'll really want that longer length.
