  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Arri launch new Camera at IBC, Alexa Amira.

matt

talk to editors at busy post houses in LA (this is what they told me)...the small cost of post work on film shoots is saving a lot of money for producers..

I've heard this, too, but the cost is from conforming footage shot on multiple formats from multiple cameras and in multiple locations, edited by multiple editors, etc. not so much the cost saved because film has a nicer look "baked in."

There might be some truth to this on productions over the $100+ million mark shooting on multiple systems because cutting edge digital workflows are still being developed, or (I hate to say it here) with houses that have to deal with how finicky red footage/other raw formats can be for a house inexperienced in working with it, but it has no application for smaller projects.

Furthermore the (enormous) cost of a best light scan must be weighed against any additional work digital footage requires on a smaller scale project.

That's exactly what the Arri rep said, the cost to change a sensor would make it prohibitively expensive. But somehow Red has manged to offer this Dragon upgrade because they designed the ability into the original camera design and not an after thought... where it would indeed cost maybe more then makes any sense. Just a different philosophy.

I think you have to look at the actual dollars involved. The Epic upgrade is almost half the cost of the camera. So, assuming that an Alexa upgrade would be the same percentage, that means that while an Epic upgrade costs about $10K, an Alexa upgrade would be twice that. So what Arri might be saying is that the market can bear a $10K price tag for a camera upgrade (as opposed to a new camera purchase), but twice that might be a tough sell, assuming that the buyer has a choice between upgrading the sensor - thus generating no return on the original camera purchase - or buying a new camera while selling the existing one. So the real difference isn't necessarily the cost of the upgrade, but the cost of the camera.

Just another way of looking at it..

Erich - Its not just the cost of the sensor upgrade. Arri have added in camera filters, audio options, new cheaper media functionality, flip out LCD, ergonomic functionality etc etc. In the Red eco system these upgrades are offered as individual modules that can added up quickly. But you have the choice to buy them or not. All the camera companies have there own way of making the business numbers work.
I have the same concerns as you about the future viability of 1080 only in a premium camera. But then again in docs/ television I am not seeing anyone posting in 4k yet. However I am seeing more and more interviews shot in 4k/ 5k for second angle close up extraction.

I wrote a couple of articles about all this for redshark.
I'm a little shocked to find they seem to be pitching this at the lower end of the market. I thought it was going to be more Arri HD in price at first and then the video came out saying Canon EF mount and I was like whaaaaa?

My suspicion as to why they are doing this is because a new Alexa is on its way soon.
It's still going to fly off the shelves tho.

Regarding the 2/3rds question, I believe the F55 will window down to 1080 for use with S16 glass, meaning that it has that base - along with many others - covered.

I've been involved in a project this year that's using F55 and C300. We're now at the grading stage and the difference in the integrity of image from the two cameras is amazing. The F55 is apparently doing a roaring trade for rental houses in the UK and you can see why, it's a very, very well thought out product.

From the show floor:

€25-35k so this is competitively priced. targeting TV shows / broadcast / documentary
From the way he said it, they are definitely trying to get the price down as low as possible. So rather €25k than €35K

5kg (so they seem to not be sure themselves) for the camera
No RAW of course
The audio commentary is additional to the 4 audio tracks
Wifi is not fully defined yet for what they will be using it. Targets are for example TC sync and live preview
Dual card slots - planned for continuos record (120GB pro res 444 = ca. 55min footage)
Gold mount and v-mount user exchangeable
PL and B4 mount also user interchangeable but with recommendation for letting a service do it to make sure everything is set up correctly
They were heavily advertising the closed off electronics making it rain / shower water "proof" (wouldn't want to try that though, but who knows)
The fold away screen was pretty wobbly - which is said to be fixed
The models at the show were recording (started to be available since IBC)

First 10 or so pre production models will be going out to productions/ studios this year for feedback.
Production models expected beginning or mid 2014

The guy from arri said 25-35K € with an emphasis on 25. They will be trying to get it there.

That sounds about right. I also heard 25,000 euro but I have played it down in my article because I don't think it's offficial-official yet if you know what I mean.

No it's not official. That's why I said that they will be trying to get it there ;) He was almost offended when I suggested the 35.000 ... hehehe
