  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Arri launch new Camera at IBC, Alexa Amira.

Whoa! The video is fantastic. Looks like awesome ergonomics. From the limited info online it looks like Log-C or Rec709, no RAW but Alexa proved to be very successful with Log-C. Not a good day to own an F5 or F55 I guess.

I think F55 owners will be fine as that camera is still a 4k camera and can shoot 4k internal and also 4k raw. The F5 is not in the same price range. I would think that it'll be a very popular camera though, even if it is just 2k but that hasn't stopped the Alexa.

Can existing Alexa owners pay a nominal fee to convert? Oh wait, this is Arri we're talking about, not Red. :)

No thanks...

i have no use for it at all but it looks like it does (what it does) perfectly....i read somewhere else that price might be under 25k...which i doubt...but this looks a lot better then anything canon has to offer....
i know that 4k is the new black but i think this will rent out like crazy....alexa run and gun? for half the price? sounds like music to a lot of people....

I saw it today and one thing surprised me. It is heavy. Felt like 9 kilos without a battery or lens. Especially after trying epic on the Movi. But it seemed to be functioning. I don't know if it could record but you could look through the viewfinder etc...

From the promo it looks like they paired it with the Fujinon Cabrio 19-90. If that's the standard "kit" lens for this new camera, that means the price range for this package will be much closer $60,000+. That lens alone is around $40K.

announcing this early before shipping is like trying to freeze a kicker in an nfl game, shutting down or at least getting people to delay f55 and c500 purchases until more is known about the new kid on the block

A small Alexa. Good idea! A pitty they didnt do it 2 years ago. Same tech put an ND wheel, make it smaller, sound, and make all HD Alexa owner cry.

Next free FW update please add 4k raw. It s the way I m shooting my documentries.

F55 simply out specs it, easy

The thing is advertised specs only tell half the story. No single camera manufacturer tells the entire engeeniring specs in their systems. That is why many people love the Alexa 'look', surely because they work their chips in a way to deliver the best image possible, not the biggest image possible... and although it might not have all the top specs, but it does have that Alexa image quality that many people love and that has brought Oscars and millions in box office revenue.

And to most people that get paid for their work, that's what really matters. Aesthetic image quality, not paper specs.

Well, very true but that said cinematographers are now loving the C500 which is only twelve stops better than the Arri Alexa

If you think image quality is why people choose Alexa you do not understand this industry at all.

What don't I understand? Why am I choosing Alexa 85% of the time when I own an Alexa and an Epic? Here's my reasons:

-Excellent filmic, easily emotionally accessible images out of the box
-Wonderful with natural light, high dynamic range, beautiful highlight rolloff
-Works like a tank every day all day without another thought:
-image does not start to tear in client's monitor 5 times a day
-beautiful viewfinder is a representation of the image I am getting
-no 30mins blackbalance required, no weird artifacts appearing out of nowhere in middle of shoot, no annoying bugs
-records in uncompressed 2.8K RAW with external recorder and allows simultaneous Prores4444 recording for easy post workflow
-Let's me focus on the art of shooting rather than the art of troubleshooting

Do I wish it had higher resolution: YES
Does lower resolution make it an inferior camera: Absolutely not
Are several camera systems out there (Alexa, Epic, F55) very good and absolutely capable: Yes

If I had to list the reasons I see in order of frequency...
1. Ease of use/familiarity for those used to film cameras
2. Workflow simplicity (Prores only, which makes up 90% of Alexa shows).
3. Brand loyalty and or bias
4. Aesthetics or image quality

There are now plenty of cameras that can make an image as good as if not better than an Alexa but few do so as easily, the Alexa takes most of the decisions away from the camera dept. and such it's fairly hard to screw up. That means less stress on the producers and they can get a "pretty good" image for not a lot of effort. To me the Alexa image is just boring.
