  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ARRI 4K Super 35 Camera Will be Launched Next Month

Creating Proxy files for ARRI ALEXA 35 Footage in Davinci Resolve for Smoother Playback with Blackmagic's Proxy Generator Program.

Part 1

First here are my Laptop's System Specs so that you will know how it matches up with yours for reference. Your computer will most likely be more up to date with much greater performance.

Blackmagic Proxy Generator

you can find the "Blackmagic Proxy Generator" Program inside of the "Blackmagic Design" folder in your "Start" window under the "B's"

Blackmagic Proxy Generator Setup

I'm using the "H.264 8 bit 4:2:0 1080P" Proxy setting

Next press "ADD" to go to the Folder that includes the ARRIRAW files you want to make Proxy files for. In this case the folder is "Arri alexa 35 Test Footage I use most"

After you press the "ADD" button you will see that there is nothing in the folder you know should have 3 ARRIRAW files in it. The reason for this is because the program is looking for "PROXY" files, since you haven't made any yet it will be empty.

After you press "Select Folder" it will return back to the main screen with the folder you selected in the "Watch Folder".Next you will need to Press the "Start" button to start the job.

After the Proxy rendering job is complete you can do one of two things. The reason the area that contains the folder you just created Proxies in is called the "Watch Folder" is because if you don't press the "STOP" button and just close the program out by pressing the "X" after the Proxy rendering job is complete, it will continually watch for any new files you put in that folder and it will automatically create new Proxy files for those new clips. However if you don"t want it to continually create proxies of any new imported clips, just press the "STOP" button and it will go back to "START" and it will not look in that folder any further.

PART 2( It's best to watch the Videos below in "FULL SCREEN" mode for a better understanding of what's actually happening)

First here's a Video of the Render time to create 3 Proxy files for the 3 ARRIRAW files which combined were 29GBs in size

Next is a video showing the Playback performance of the Three ARRI Alexa 35 ARRIRAW files with no Tools enabled to improve the smoothness of the playback performance and with "PROXY HANDLING" set to "PREFER CAMERA ORIGINALS". Although the settings and the video shows "USE OPTIMIZED MEDIA IF AVAILABLE" selected, no OPTIMIZED MEDIA was created so there was none available to use.

Notice Also the "PROXY" symbols indicated with the "RED" Circles.

The Proxy files allow for a much smoother playback with no "DROPPED FRAMES".

Yeah, I believe you're right. I remember one of the Arri heads of the many different Camera Divisions saying in one of the many interviews from Arri about the Alexa 35 camera that the Alexa LF and Alexa Mini LF would be available for the next 2 to 3 years. That gave me the impression that the next line of cameras that they would be focusing on would be their Full- Frame sensor cameras.

I think it is more likely they will first focus on the ARRI 35, offering say a Mini version of that, and/or perhaps a remote head version of it. And say an ARRI 35 sensor in a more AMIRA style body.

I didn't think about them maybe making some 'MINI" Form Factor Alexa 35. That would be an interesting Camera at maybe about a $35,000 to $50,000 price point.

I forgot to Mention, The other benefit of me Creating these ProRes 4444XQ files from the ARRIRAW files inside of the ARRI REFERENCE TOOL is that They will be recognized by the ARRI REFERENCE TOOL and you can apply ALF4 look files to them or you can create your own.

You Could Change the Output Display Transform to whatever you wanted Since I created them as ProRes 4444XQ AWG4/ALC4 Log files and you could change the Quality Of ProRes from the 4444XQ format I made them in to a lower quality for better performance on your computer or for smaller storage sizes. You could do this for a single file or as a Batch render.

I took the "SIRENS" ProRes 4444XQ ARRI Alexa 35 Clip from 4.63GB down to 1.67GB with a Transcode to ProRes 422 in the ARRI REFERENCE TOOL

All videos by Simon Todorov

If you can't see the videos below and are seeing the same error message I'm seeing shown below, I downloaded all 12 (2160P) videos and put them in a folder so you can download them if you want to.
