  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ARRI 4K Super 35 Camera Will be Launched Next Month

I Just watched "THE SWING", one of the ARRI ALEXA 35 " ENCOUNTER" videos, and it looked like most of the images were still in LOG. This could be because they were going for a "DREAMY" fairytale look or they just preferred a low-contrast look for this. The 5 screengrabs from the video below are how I would maybe like to have seen the video graded. However, my opinion is just my opinion.

Not sure how you are capturing your screen grabs but they don't represent the graded image I am seeing on my Apple imac. The image has way more contrast than you represented in this case.

I just played the video back full screen and just used the " Windows Icon key + The Print Screen key) and just graded on top of that.I didnt download the video, grade it then export it out as a ti, png or jpeg file. I just imported it into a Davinci YRGB workflow/ grade it/ saved it to the " GALLERY" and exported it from there. I didn't export it from the "Delivery" page.

So that could account for what you are seeing or some Gamma setting with the Mac. I used a REC 709 OUTPUT for the Project not SRGB. Have you tried using Rec709 ( Scene A) to view it? It just to be a quick grade not to be technically accurate.

Hey Rand, the problem is apparently not how you graded but how the screenshot looks in the first place. Compare the above to the one I just took from youtube with the same Print Screen key:

Thanks Alex,

The Screen Shot I took looked a lot more washed out than the one you've displayed above. The one you've displayed above seems to have more contrast and color than the screengrab I captured.

The washed out pictures are saved with Rec 709, apparently, and that doesn't match what we see with sRGB on the monitor:

Thanks for investigating this Alex! I'm cooking some steaks right now but I will try regrading these a little later on today in SRGB mode:thumbsup:

Alex explained this better than I. What you captured, not what you graded, was more washed out than what I was seeing. I thought the grade / correction was really good on Youtube link but I can see how people don't like this. To me it captured pretty much what I consider a natural look, the faces are darker because they would be darker not being turned towards the windows. The light was even, closer to how our eyes even contrast out.

There was a Youtube discussing the lighting in Dune versus any Marvel movie that basically pointed out they didn't unnaturally highlight any main characters face in the action scenes which made it feel more realistic. Not everyones cup of tea but definitely something I strive for.

Hopefully the steaks will be colorful and delicious.... :)

Bright red perfectly cubed and seasoned, HaHa

Ash,

When I see it the way Alex presented it looks about right to me also. But I still think I would prefer a little more contrast seperation but without crushing the entire scene even more. I will try again later so that it will look a little better to you and to everyone viewing it in SRGB.

Looks dramatically different than before, for the better I'd say ;)

Not buying it. Sand is basically a gigantic natural bounce card and will light a face very different than other environments. Do you have a link to this YT Video?

When I saw Arri mention it I laughed, but then, I also recall Arri stealing Jim Jannards emails back then.
Correction: a former employee at Band Pro stole the emails -- not Arri per se.

As far as I know, the case was settled without anybody publicly paying anybody damages and nobody went to jail:

A lot of weird stuff happens in corporate espionage -- this is the tip of the iceberg, particularly in the camera business.

Um have yu been reading Graemes new color schience updates over the years, always about neon and brake lights? Uh guess not... okie. When I saw Arri mention it I laughed, but then, I also recall Arri stealing Jim Jannards emails back then.
I've seen Red cameras overload with bright neon, brake lights, street lights, all kinds of stuff. It was a lot worse 10 years ago, and it's better now, but it still happens. Same issues with high-end Canon, Alexa, and Sony cameras, too. We have some tricks we use in post to try to get some of the detail and color back, but it's a bit of a hack. On one show, I convinced the DP to put some strips of ND filter paper inside the light facade, and it actually worked pretty well whenever the hero car was used. This problem can also happen with film, because the light is so spikey and neither the film nor a film scanner can recover from an overexposure that severe.

Judging by the recent demos that Arri posted, the S35 handles these overshoots better than anything currently on the market, so they've clearly been paying attention.

Are there any clips that we can download from this camera to have a play with? I’d love to see what’s possible.

I've been looking also, and haven't seen anything "available for download" yet. I've seen it being demonstrated on page 30-31 of the FDTimes ALEXA35 Camera Report(Link Below) in a Version 17 Of Davinci Resolve that had an "ARRI LOGC4" "TIMELINE COLOR SPACE" available but I'm using Version 18 Beta 4 and don't see it available in this BETA 4 Version. Maybe there was an "ARRI LOGC4" selection available in the Retail Version of Resolve 17, I never checked. Because otherwise there will only be "ARRI LOGC" which won't give you an accurate representation of the new capabilities of the new camera.

There will be samples soon, some of the test films won't be available, too early on and wrong format used (or too early of a build), but Resolve support is in a private beta and working. New LUTs have been released and received an update since the last beta ones. I would slightly suspect there might be one other internal firmware or LUT update as well before launch. Possible they might just leave it, but hard to know.

Thanks Phil for this info! Yeah I read a lot online of people pointing out certain "Highlights" in some of the "ENCOUNTER" films that looked either too hot or were about to CLIP. They didn't think a Camera claiming 17-Stops of Dynamic Range should be exhibiting that behavior. I was thinking how and in what NLE was ARRI LOGC4 supported in yet, thanks for that tid bit of Info about the workflow limitations and of an additional ARRI LOGC4 Transform LUT Pack coming.

Also hoping for an ACES ARRI LOGC4 IDT as well.

All cameras clip. The question is always do you want it to or not as well as how you want it to look when it does.

Right now there's a bit of discussion among colorist-type-people about some of the high gamut handling, but it's a hard one to really properly discern at the moment without shooting a great deal of tests with the actual camera.

Not diving too deep into color science related things here, but I'd wait and see how things flesh out in the next month or two.
