  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

are there specific issues with Wooden 'that interfere with how our camera works'?

Countdown until this thread gets removed...

If there were, one would think that they would have come to light previously here in the forums. I'll be interested to see if there's an official response, but given the on-going nature of the conflict, that may not be in the cards. Other than latching to the provided connector instead of just screwing, there doesn't seem to be any difference between Wooden's battery plate and all the various other options out there. The cage components are similar to offerings from any number of other companies, though design aesthetic is obviously a point of contention for Red.

I'm honestly confused by Red's complaint. Some of the products they're chasing here DO have distinctions- e.g. the safety stops on the Wooden Camera side ribs, or the A-lock's additional mounting points. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I bought the A-lock over the Red accessory V-mount because it was announced first. I can see why Red would try to protect their IP here, but then I get confused as to why Viewfactor etc. haven't been slapped with suits for almost identical products to these like their own rib set and accessory v-mount (the shuttle mount, of which I am a proud owner). Hopefully that won't be coming.

I'm asking a valid question in a non-confrontational manner.

But, yes it's also a concern to see entire threads pulled and to see every other post in some threads missing.

The only entities I see aggressively redacting free discussion are ...., ...., and .... - and I'm sure RED would not intentionally emulate them?

Well, don't some of the top plates cover the vent, potentially reducing airflow? That is the one that comes immediately to mind.

All the different top plates have a grate over top of the vent to ensure airflow.

I know, but is the flow equal to that of the original vent cover that must be removed? I'm no engineer and took no measurements, I just wonder if this is not one of the issues at hand.

Surface area dedicated for venting looks comparable between Red's tactical top plate and Wooden Camera's. Hard to imagine that this would be an issue (and I've seen no reports of overheating or increased fan noise).

Just FWIW, I have the WC top plate and I would guess the ventilation in it is better than the original plastic cover that comes on the Scarlet.

Do you use a REDmote? I've got great range with my REDmote, and wouldn't want to mess that up?

I do use the REDmote and I get great performance out of mine; never had an issue. You can take a small plate out of the WC top plate if you want, but I never have had to.

No real issues with WC, VF, Canon or other 3rd party products used with RED except . . . any 3rd party products used with RED cameras completely voids the RED warranty as best I can tell. As in any non-RED product attached to a RED camera, like a lens, battery, mic etc voids the warranty forever even if the accessory is unrelated to the camera failure.
Those folks showing off their 3rd party rigs on this forum seem to not have a need for a warranty. I personally only use 100% RED products because I paid extra for the "M" 2 year warranty and do not want to void that by using 3rd party components like WC nato rails or top plates. I suggest all RED users do not use or support any 3rd party products for this reason. RED clearly has everything the industry needs in the RED.com store. If you need more than that then you should buy a different brand of camera or something.

Does RED sell filters? Because by your understanding of the warranty, then using a Tiffen Hot Mirror in your RED Matte Box voids your RED warranty.

I wonder how you would use a Canon mount with only RED lenses. And, while I would love that little button mic that RED showed off a long time ago, to my knowledge, there are no RED microphones, or filters. And I guess you can only use the RED matte box. LOL

Completely untrue. We do not have a single Red accessory for our Red One MX, and it had full warranty coverage and all upgrades (audio board, MX, etc).

Here are the "rules"
The biggest issue is lens mounts and power. Another is Audio. Audio for some reason is probably the biggest clusterfuck of miss-match out there.. not sure why. and when you deal with phantom power and bad connections, miss-wired backwards cables or just bad board design, bad things can happen.

So if the accessory you attach causes damage, then that damage isn't covered by warranty. This, however, is true with Red accessories as well. I've seen cameras fried by Red LCD cables that appeared to function perfectly, but shorted out the cameras CPU ($5,000 repair). Red warranty doesn't apply to matters like that.

I believe lens mounts are the only 3rd party accessories that have outright revoked warranties.

I wonder if that's related to the suggestions by RED to pull the LCD cable out if the screen goes full white or 1/2 white with the latest non-beta release?

If I remember, aluminum screws are also verboten - but I wonder about 3rd party power options.

There's never been any 'official' word on AB or the other top battery brands. I got a response that GMP batteries were being looked at by RED, but ... never heard anything official about them either.

RED's are of such fine quality (they give you a 90 day, few questions asked warranty, after all), I'm not sure why anyone would buy 3rd party power?

I hear that!

That's why my only Wooden 'accessory' ever purchased is the sunglasses.

And actually, they were kind of inferior, I couldn't see through walls or anything.

That was with a Red One. No warning or sign of issue until after the damage was done.

Hard to know if you're being sarcastic or not... there are lots of reasons like: Airline safe batteries, different weights and Amp hours, for documentary or steadicam work. Already having batteries from a different camera system, etc.

AB offers between a 1 year and 5 year warranty on their batteries. I love Red, but there warranty on accessories is an industry low.

I don't know about you, but I treat my LCD cable like it's made of glass. I don't really like to even bend it or un-plug it.

The best sarcasm should be open to interpretation, not that there's anything wrong with a 3 month battery warranty which deviates from the other battery companies and might have some influence why large number of people use GMP, etc.

The RED SSD warranty of 3 months is also interesting.

The less expensive flash cells typically have greater than 3,000 write/erase cycles (the better ones much more, and more redundancy for cells that go bad), and I'm sure RED used higher quality cells than that.

If you tried your very hardest, you'd have difficulty recording, transferring to other storage, and then re-recording an entire SSD more than 10 times a day (so they would last maybe 300 days of constant use).

Most will be used far less, so ... the 3 month warranty is thus an interesting number.

I'm actually quite happy with RED, but ... I do wish they would tune up their warranties a bit.

When one pays top dollar for parts, one wants to feel a bit more secure than a 90 day warranty provides.

Especially when there are thread about REDvolts that quickly have issues (have yet to use mine, I use A/C power - so I'm keeping my fingers crossed).
