  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Are the swappable OLPF modules useable in the new upgrade?

Motion Mount is also compatible with Weapon.

IF..and I stress IF there was any of the motion mount functions contained within the WEAPON then, while technically the motion mount is compatible as a working mount you could in theory be doubling up in function.

I say this because there was speculation that weapon might offer some global shutter shenanigans or ND sauce that might make the motion mount somewhat or fully obsolete.

I personally would not buy a motion mount just now till there is some real info out.

I cant keep track of who got to see the weapon via a private showing....Are you saying you know for sure the weapon doesn't contain any of the functions of motion mount?

That mean we can score those functions off the wish list? Spill your beans Mark! 8)

THIS!!! :)

I for one am hoping that there will be no need for OLPFs to be swapped.

As mentioned before, the big problem for our work is that one must choose between lights in frame not having pink orbs around them (Skin OLPF) and light sensitivity as good or better than MX, with blacks that are not clipped (Low Light OLPF). You can't have both at the same time right now, not yet.

A big chunk of the shots we do would require both those attrtibutes in the same frame, so much as we'd love to upgrade, Dragon cannot work for us. (You may be doing very different kinds of work, so this does not apply to you). I have a feeling (hopefully an accurate intuition) that the new Weapon will give exactly that, and solve the CMOS smearing problem and gate shadow issues completely AND come with a "Goldilocks OLPF" that solves both orb and low light problems in a single OLPF. Besides, I NEVER want to switch out an OLPF on set. No time, not practical, and kinda stress inducing.

So, I hope that few people would even want to switch on weapon, because the standard OLPF that will come with it will please almost everyone. I would gladly pay whatever is necessary to get that.

I am not exactly sure of the science behind it, but if I am not mistaken, the same quantum dot film technology that is bringing super accurate colour to LCD TVs, can also be applied to sensors. With LCD TVs, the phosphor of the LCD lights is replaced with quantum film. With sensors, it works in reverse. The film sits in front of the sensor, filtering the light into very specific wavelengths of colour. Could the weapon involve a quantum dot film upgrade to the dragon sensor? I am not even sure if this is possible, but in theory... If that is the case OLPFs would be redundant I guess. Colour would be more or less perfect, so the OLPF would just have to strike the best balance of the other parameters, like moire, noise etc. Just a crazy theory...

Quantum film also allows for global shutter to be integrated into the film without any light loss. :-)

we will know a lot more about all this when Shane releases the info next week...

I doub the weapon will fix the CMOS smearing, that is a sensor issue. Hopefully the next sensor fixes that. I do hope the OLPF solves the issues you mention, though I still see swappable being desired. I want a zero LP version of the goldilocks. An IR version would be fun too.

Actually no, it's a processing issue, normally erased/corrected by post-processing chips before recording images to disk so that the user never knew it was there unless they use an eyedropper in Photoshop to compare neighboring pixels for slight numeric shifts. Me thinks maybe Epics chips were too overtaxed by 6K data stream to correct the problem in real time before recording which could have been the problem, but I'm just guessing. Weapon brings a whole new bag of chips (pun intended, and admittedly bad) to the table, so fixing this may be 100% possible, or so I am hoping.

Quantum dot allows a wider gamut, but the current QD displays are far from accurate and this is intentional on the display manufacturers part. A 3D LUT is needed to correct them.

Most of the quantum dot inaccuracy in monitors, as I understand it, is due to the fact they still rely on led backlighting. So blacks aren't black. That problem doesn't apply to sensors.

Hey Phil,

I am about to buy some medium format lenses, will they work with Weapon or should I wait. :wink5:

Nearly every issue can be eliminated with clever filtering. Especially a completely 100% predictable smear that should be relatively trivial to correct at the RAW level. (much easier to correct pre-debayer since it will affect all the columns in a row similarly regardless of color filter.

Lol, well they will work...But will the sensor be that size is the question

Yeah, I really want this fixed, I'd really like to see a demo of it fixed before I put more into the Dragon sensor. I can live with the sensitivity misinformation, but that CMOS smearing nails me on a lot of stuff.

I'm still surprised it's not as vocal of an issue on the message boards.

Red is aware of it, and aware that it's worse than other cameras, even their outgoing MX...I just hope it's at the top of the list for the upgrade.

There is a good example of this in the season 3 Final episode of house of cards. Claire is standing in the kitchen with kitchen lights right behind her. I think it is simply something we have to get use too like lens flares. Because I don't see them simply fixing this issue.
