  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Are the swappable OLPF modules useable in the new upgrade?

Just about to pay for the LLO unit as mine is now ready for shipping.

Has there been any mention if the olpf units are useable? It would seem very unfortunate to buy one now, more so tamper with my camera unnecessarily only to have the body change and the OLPF delivery system change.

I dont know the answer to your question but I think LLO´s will still be in demand post NAB. As I think not all dragons will not be upgraded and very few have that OLPF so possibly you can sell it if it would not work with the new system and make some of those 190 USD´s back. And I think you could even possibly sell it here for a prime price as they are high in demand and the line of people waiting for delivery are quite many.
 
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it'll be at least Fall 15 or Winter 16 until even the high priority owners get the new camera / upgrade their hands. OLPFs are one of the cheapest things in the Red store and offer some of the best gains in image quality based on specific shooting situations, so I'd say even if it's not transferrable, it'd be good to get in line now for one. I've got the STH , LLO and the Full Spectrum and they're all well worth the money.

Provided the camera is swappable ready, the OLPF's are pretty easy to change.
 
I think there's a reasonable chance the sensor mount and the area near it will support the swappable OLPFs. The form factor change might require something smaller, but the sensor and the lens mounts are still viable in their current sizes so I'm pretty optimistic.

The wild card would be if RED decides to offer some kind of internal ND filter wheel, which some folks have requested. As Charles notes, the OLPFs are relatively low cost, so of all the bits that might be left behind by the new body…

Blair, are you specifically talking about traditional NDs on an internal wheel? Because my mind immediately went to a wheel with several OLPFs.
 
Yeh, looks like we need to wait and see. I`ve got a few purchases Id like to make, the OLPF is not super urgent at the moment. I almost bought a +1 module for example recently. Want to avoid buying up any EOL accys...small and large.
 
Thanks Phil. I figured that the design rubric would have aimed to keep the Dragon sensor, existing lens mounts and everything in between compliant with the existing form factor. That said, had achieving that required too many other design compromises…

I also surmised that RED would not have jumped in on the swappable OLPF program so aggressively if they already knew it would not fit into the Weapon chassis.

Charles, what IR filters have you used. I imagine the Tiffen #87 IR filter might be a good choice. Thoughts?

The full spectrum is pretty fun. I only had a day to mess around with it so far in between projects, but I think there's tons of options that are going to open up because of it. I put on a 72NM IR filter so far, all non visible light, and it looked great. The psych stuff is what I'm after with it, if you check out my style of work, so I'm going to be experimenting with different filtration really soon. Really glad the option exists and it was relatively inexpensive.

Yeah I'd definitely endorse the 3rd party OLPFs.

Didn't Jarred say that whilst the existing mounts will work with Weapon, there is going to be a new mount as well?

No, he just didn't specifically state there wouldn't be one, while saying the current lens mounts would work with the weapon, and that was enough for the speculation to run rampant.

I must admit I might have helped fuel that speculation, stating that the obscure picture of (what is probably, lol) the new I/O module might be a new kind of lens mount, (albeit for a different kind of RED camera altogether).

Not saying there won't in fact be a new lens mount (or sensor), but as far as I know there's been no official word on it.

Just wanted to say that, as I felt a bit guilty for helping fan the flames of wishful thinking. No more guessing games for me.
