  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Appreciation...

This all sounds lilke a funeral. Hey guys. Liven it up. No one has died (other than possibly the conpetition).
More like a little quiet reflection before going out to do battle.

let me bore you with a brief story from 1970:
when we were at film school in Vienna we went to Schwarz lab in Berne/Switzerland to investigate 16mm blow-up options, Schwarz junior showed us an oversized brown briefcase containing a 16mm Arriflex BL with an Angenieux 15-150mm zoom. This was one of the very first Super 16 cameras in existence. Back in Vienna I broke these news to the most respected rental house in town. They just laughed at me and would not stop until I put a copy of an engineering drawing of an enlarged Super 16 frame on their desk, which was signed by Arri.

cut to: 35 years later
I had been following rumors about a new camera called RED, have kept watch on a webpage which did not seem to change for some time, and was hoping that this was going to materialize after Kinetta and Grass Valley´s budget camera concept were not likely to happen anytime soon. Same story again. I got these knowing smiles from the video guys and went into defending mode each time the name RED was brought up.

cut to: present time
RED is an established player and industry leader and has convinced the movie world to rethink digital acquisition. And I am a happy early adopter and look forward to many more years with the most advanced shooting gear on the planet.

Thank you Jim Jannard for all you have done for me and many others.

There are few places online where I truly feel at home, and I'm proud to say REDUser is one of them, mostly because of the talented, helpful, and well spoken membership throughout the site. Thanks for letting us inexperienced neophytes read, post, and learn. Rarely elsewhere do you see professionals talking to those who can't even be classified as amateurs, and yet you did, many a time! Hopefully one day, I'll finally be able to meet many of you REDUsers in person and give you a hearty "Thank You!"

Jim and the RED crew, we wouldn't be here without you! Ketch, your story is mindboggling! I also want to recognize Joseph; watching you and your journey has been inspiring to say the least! All of you, I pray for many blessings in your endeavors!

You will only know the power of being a Reduser if you travel to work around the world. The immediate Love, support, surprise, dedication and expertise given to you is extremely valuable. I always say there might be 9000 owners but over 30,000 users and admirers its amazing.
Thank You RED.....

You know...
As a young director ... life is quite hard you have to fight against a lot of problems... Finding money to live, trying to make your short films anyway in order to show what you are able to do, you have a lot deceptions ... sometimes you earn prices but no one cares so you continue somehow.... sometime Motivation is leaving your soul, as you fought during a long period ... since 9 years old for me ... ;) pretty long walk since then... What is more it's quite hard for your nerve when all is passion ... because Passion is not reasonable to build a perfect life...
and sometime you have other things... such as important medical problems ...but I won't continue in that way ... that can stop you right away in your flight to the top...

I just wanted you to know,... I now it's not really important as I'm no one... especially when you look at all the great people around here... but for me, and I'm not here to shine shoes, but trust me your cameras gave me the guts, the soul and the above all the power to fight and continue as hard as I can...
You gave us a wonderful full Scale concert Piano ... a real STENWAY & SONS... or a concert BOSENDORFER and as a pianist ...It's such nice a perfect tool
that's helped to bring inspiration to me, and thus lighting passion which helped to make me Dream again...
Image is really important for me and as a Painter I'm having the opportunity to use the best brush of the world, I cannot imagine what I will be able to create thanks to you

I'm also teaching to numerous students (more than 90 each year) in a private school... how to use the RED and how to emphasize their work with this fantastic tool
I've done my best to spread my enthusiasm and my RED's Passion... I think it's working well...
Hope that more and more people will use your camera in the near futur... this is the best thing and sadly the only thing I can do concretely for you to thank you for all you have done for us ... for me...

God bless you

A real passionated Fan :)

BTW... this moment in time is the single best of my business life. I have had the luxury of being associated with a bunch of really great people and really cool stuff ... more than anyone deserves. But the release of EPIC takes the cake. Times a million.

Jim

Jim:

You have every reason to be exhilarated - and proud - of both the product and the team.

Your baby is finally being delivered - sit back with an Epic in your lap and light up a few cigars for all of us! :thumbup1:

WOW, such an awesome thread. Jim, I hope you don't mind -- I'm going to take your word on the whole handshake thing -- it's something I've been looking forward to since I found out about this community less than a year ago (I'm late to the party).

This forum has been the most amazing source of learning and information, it's really hard to believe. David Mullen has been amazing ... still can't believe he's so willing to teach for free (I come from an industry where people make millions "teaching" and sharing a lot less) .... then to those like Gibby, Mark, Jeff K, Roberto, Evan and even Sanjin (a fellow Leica nut) ... I just come here whenever I'm not working or out so I can learn and be inspired. What a gift this is .....

Last but not least, can't help but thank Ketch Rossi -- just so unbelievable generous sharing his time, wisdom and even letting me come visit (long before he had the Epic-M). Ketch you have been a big inspiration, and hope I can repay all the help someday. If you're reading this, please check your FB I'm going to send you a message about the website text -- let's maybe chat about where I should start. Thanks Buddy :)

No, it was just a still from a DSLR to show relative frame size of 4k vs 1080p/720p/SD etc...

That was the first thing to get the "scam" rumour-mill going - everyone on forums was running around saying "It's a hoax, that's just a picture from a DSLR, I checked the metadata" and the like, despite the fact that the website very clearly stated that the image was not from the camera they were developing and was for relative frame size reference only. (EDIT: I should add, in fairness, that there were a fair few people - many of them the big names like Gibby et al - who were backing Red up even then, which along with Jim's involvement started to shift the balance of opinion fairly quickly, at least amongst those with their ears to the ground.)

Oh well... I guess everyone knows what the deal is now!

Cheers,
Dom.

Ohhhhh, yeah! So much of the "scam" part has been thoroughly overrun with a multitude of Red-generated projects over the years, I had forgotten about that. Thanks for the reminder, Dom.

Everyone has expressed gratitude to Red - I feel very much the same way. I have been happy to wave the Red flag in what is a very conservative industry. I just want to come back to one thing that Jim said that also rang very true. David Mullen has been on this forum for what has sometimes been a pretty wild ride - always calm, reasoned when sometimes passions ran hot. Just a pleasure to read his posts and I have learned so much from them. It kind of gave the whole forum more authority and substance. Maybe there should be a special "Mullen Red Edition" camera at some point.

WELL I guess I'll throw down here too.

When I was a kid, I raced BMX and there were these killer grips that we all used from this little company called Oakley ...... Flash forward a few years and I was playing Baseball. I had a kick ass pair of M-Frame Oakley glasses .... sharp grounder to shortstop and it took a wicked bounce right off the glasses ..... if it wasn't for the toughness of those glasses I would have had a broken nose ...... Flash forward again. I had heard of RED and showed up late to NAB 06. I knew a guy and he let me in the little room where you guys had set up some screens and a few machined parts and Body. I wish I had the money that day but couldn't make the deposit. It took me until later that year to convince my wife that this was the right move for us ....... been on the Ride of a lifetime since.

Jim, thanks .... for the grips, sunglasses and now the mother and father of all cameras.

Jarred, thanks for keeping it real. Everything you put out here on Reduser keeps us all moving in the right direction.

Kelly, thanks for being The face of RED for a long time.

Everyone else at RED that gives so much of their time and effort to make products that drive an industry.

And of course My Bomb Squad Rep, thanks for everything you've helped me order, pick up, repair and troubleshoot.

YOU ALL ROCK!

If Jim made films they would be huge epic dramas, they would sweep you away into the realm of unforgettable classics that stand the test of time and generations to come....

I'm so glad he makes cameras so I can use the tools made with the natural unstoppable passion of a true creator.

Thank you Jim, It takes a clear vision and unwavering dedication to mount the journey you have chosen.

BTW Sony will never get this unstoppable dedication and passion until they too come out from behind the glass wall and show the true passion for creating like RED does.

If they are just punching numbers still....god help them.

See I think the thing here is Jim and team have never been "in it for the money" like most corporations around the globe. That is the difference, and as surely as the sun will rise tomorrow the passion and dedication to the higher calling of creating leads ultimately to success. That passion never lets RED say "NO" or "it can't be done" or even "it will cost more then it's worth" It takes a change of MIND to reach this type of business concept I suspect.

If only others would learn this concept, put your passion and love of what you do first ...the rest will follow.

Hello Jim,

I appreciate everything you have done for the independence film making industry.

You have made our dreams come true with the R1.

I still can not believe that BofA canceled my order from that first day for #37.

They call and said the deposit was "fraudulent" so they canceled it.

I wish I never lost that number, but having one of first 150 R1 has been a great journey.

It's all worth the wait.

I can't wait til I have the Epic and Scarlet in my hands.

Thank You to You and the RED Team.

Michael Thornton

I was really happy to be the first at NAB 2006 to slap down my plastic for a deposit, for # 12. I had been shooting for Oakley since 1997 and was asked to help out in the booth.

Chris P. was setting up the credit card machine machine and I thought - what the heck - Jim would never start something he wouldn't finish, I am all in. I told Chris to make me the NAB guinea pig, to make sure the POS system worked.

Best decision I ever made.

seriously... what a wonderful post (and thread). I check the forum and Recon section at the end of my day so I can go to sleep with whatever good news Reduser forum has for me to read...

thanks for everything!

I think the way Red and Jim treats everyone in the forum and everyone of its clients is a real guide of professionalism, fairness, maturity and passion... This should be an inspiration to us all whatever we do..
You are never man enough to treat someone as inferior. This is inspiring because we can aim high with the tools you are creating.
When I first posted in the forum I thought "should I post amidst all these giants in the industry".. Jarred was one of the first to post back and give me his advise... That's why I'm here like many others...

Cant wait for the Epic-S
Red - I believe

To Jim and the Red team:

I've been a member on this forum for almost two years, and I've never written a single post. I did not feel the need to. Anything that I needed to express has been done so time and time again (and quite eloquently) by the many loyal members of this forum. I've been fortunate enough to just sit back and absorb the wealth of knowledge that this forum has to offer.

I also don't need to reiterate the magnitude of the technical feat that you and your team have accomplished. Anyone who is a member of this forum is quite aware of that (and once again, have put in words far better than I could.) We are all so appreciative of that. But what I want to express my appreciation for is another aspect I feel is deeply embedded within in your vision.

On my birthday last year, I received an e-mail from the red team wishing me a happy birthday. I thought that was very thoughtful, so I responded with a thank you. Being that I thought that it was auto-generated, I did not think I'd get a response. Boy, was I wrong. Jarred wrote a reply to me saying "you're welcome, now go get drunk." I was floored by this. For him to take time out of his busy schedule to respond personally to my e-mail (and with sincerity) says volumes about this Red machine.

It tells me that wether you are lowly Robert Browning or the great Peter Jackson, everyone should be allowed one thing: a voice. If you have a story to tell, tell it (in a respectable resolution, of course.) Wether you're making a 200 million dollar movie or one on the lowest of budgets, why can't they all look good. And that is extremely significant. Paradigms will truly shift. The red team has brought status quo to it's knees.

My wife will see me browsing this forum everyday. Then i start to give her my updates. I'll put it in the best layman terms I can for her. And I can tell that she may not truly understand it all, but that's ok. Because what she does understand, is the twinkle in my eye and the smile on my mouth as I explain it to her. And when she sees that, she smiles back. She realizes that whatever this Red team has done, it must be very significant. It has to be for her husband to express this much passion.

I will be at NAB this year. It will be my first experience. And I too hope to shake your hand and give you my personal gratitude and say. "I'm honored to be able to shake the hand of a visionary. A visionary that gives the grandest of voices to the smallest of people."

I guess this qualifies as a 1st post that got my attention. Thanks so much. Makes it all worthwhile.
