  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple tablet: Thoughts?

What a piece of shit... i've never been so dissapointed on Apple ever (Yes, The Apple Tv looks like fucking rocket lab compared to iPad)

It's a crippled, oversized iPod Touch with a 4:3 screen! Come on Steve, the 90's called. They want their aspect ratio back!

Your not thinking in the realm of possibility, Its a great idea. It doesn't need to do most of the things you guys want. There is an educational 3G SIM card you can get that accesses a huge library of Books, encyclopedias, Manuals, Newspapers, etc. And its a one time cost upfront for unlimited 3G access, With a little tinkering we can get http and go beyond the steps of the electronic library.. to skype and to seedboxes with 720p x264 content.

Maybe there's a possibility to run an Operating system like this:

Worth having a read of the notes pooping up from people who have actually used the thing, rather than just looked at the form factor and specification.

It looks like a big iPhone, but isn't used as one. It very much is a crossover product somewhere between a laptop and a smartphone.

Those who have had a chance to play all seem pretty happy with it for what it is...

How can you defend it?
It's pure poo... I feel ashamed, to be honest, since i belived in his Steveness.

Just look at the specs, look at them! Apple assrapes the hardware with limitations. iPad could have been a great little gadget but Apple decided to slap us all in the face.

If you've ever jailbroken an Iphone or ipod touch before, You can easily understand how powerful it will be.

I bet a Scarlet that iPad (V1) is terminated within 12 months, bet?

I'd take you up on that except for one glaring fault. Apple rarely ever allows a product to cycle a full 12 months, whether it's a success or failure. We'll know about V2 within a year. But given that the 3G model is still 3 months away, I bet Apple rides the V1 model through the holidays this year. I wouldn't be surprised if we see capacity bumps in time for holiday shoppers and a price adjustment. They'll probably drop the V2 bomb about this time next year or somewhere around 9 months after the iPad 3G models ship.

All speculation, of course, but that's just how I see it.

I know of one other serious player with a prototype product that would compete with iPad. I don't know if they will push forward with it this year or not. Can't say more than that, but it's not a company that most people would expect. Or at least not one that immediately popped into my head, but the product makes total sense for them.

Geez people are ready to write this product off already.

I see massive potential for the future of the MBP in the iPad (and yeah the name does suck a bit!) - give it some time folks, apple just took a pretty big leap into the realm of touch UI computing - the iPhone/iPod Touch was the start, now we have this. And the future.....well if you think you wont see this kind of tech in their computers in the reasonably near future you don't know apples from oranges!

But the lack of a webcam is a bit of a head scratcher.

My 2 cents

was joking... sort of... because I'm on my 3rd ( or 4th ) iphone.... bought the 1st one when they 1st came out... then the 3g... then the 3gs.... all at full retail.

I'm not really pissed, and enjoy using it and truly believe that it's a marvel.... but I do have my suspicions that apple holds out on it's generations in order to sell the next one to the same person.... and I'm one of them. Can't really blame them for it....

I find it oddly amusing that people are complaining about a 4:3 screen ratio. It's something we've moved away from and therefore inappropriate for a new device?

Couple of points:
- Widescreen (16:9) vertically would be starting to get awkward. 4:3 gives a good aspect either direction.
- Would 5:4 have been better /not had the same odd stigma to it?
- A somewhat wider screen version (16:10?) may make for a simple differentiator between versions down the track..

It's just because they all shot in 2:1

I'm kinda "Euro" - used to shooting in 1.66:1 - so this isn't such of a big problem for me ;)

I think this might be the first Apple computer I ever buy - but mainly for use as a musical instrument interface / controller. Much cheaper than a lemur!

Need to take a look at the Asus Eee T91MT first - it's also multitouch, but is an entire frikkin' computer - you know, Atom processor, 2GB RAM, etc. For $480.

They aren't really interested in selling you on what the components of their products do, just on what the product as a whole is capable of.

Here is a new platform. Make of it what you can imagine. It's a playspace.

Sounds like another company I know... ;)

Maybe they've got the maxi iPad still to unveil. With all the missing bits from the original - plus wings!

The iPad is the first step in what will be an evolutionary product line. The footprint of the iPad has the potential to be huge. The 4:3 screen is perfect because the iPad is the next evolution of print media. Besides spanking the Kindle, the potential for ancillary lines of business in new media is a huge upside for content creators.

I am opposed to monopolistic hegemony in the market, but in the case of the iPad, having Apple control the media gateway at least in the short term, helps monetize content that might not be economically viable in the interim stage between unfettered file-sharing and pay-as-you-go streaming business models.

Like it or not now, it will evolve and we all need it to work. Media consumption must evolve into a form factor that the iPad represents or we risk losing previously viable content models.

yea i'm quite dissapointed in it as well. though i can see lots of people bying this solely on the basis that its the next cool thing from apple. but just because it has potential to be great doesn't mean it will be great. Just remember good ol' betamax:thumbsup:

microsoft has the http://couriertablet.com/ in the works mentiond earlier, but no real data on it. i remember hearing bout some other company having quite impresive in the works as well but can not remember it for my life.

2nd gen ipad in 12 months? wouldn't surprise me:001_tongue:

I'm disappointed with it.
Reminds me of the half baked Apple TV boxes.

Pretty much all my computers are Apples, but I wouldn't buy this. I just doesn't offer anything truly beyond the iphone.

Wack a usb port, a camera, and allow 3G video calling and then we'll be talking.

The second rev of this will be amazing but won't stop me from getting first rev :)

This has HUGE potential if people were to develop things for the device itself and not for the iPhone as you can differentiate between the two, also the ability to have a display output from the device and VOIP now available, things will slowly open up. Add Wi-Fi in it. RED could make an app even that would allow interaction between scarlets and epics! Crazy things can happen with this!

Add a camera in the second rev and a better processor and potential for even BETTER augmented reality apps like the current Tube one's and Layar's. It's going to be cool as hell what Apple can do when developing their own tech. The surface isn't what they are really trying to sell, its what's underneath. I can actually see myself using this on the couch and even outdoors in a cafe...its easier to pull out and faster to boot up then a laptop. Quicker to browse to exactly what you want.

It's going to be something that for many, when realized, eliminates the need for netbooks. It fills the gap definitely, the sad thing is though, it takes developers to realize the potential. iWork shows off the possibilities for Office suite and for a potential photoshop app.

They are very heavily invested at this point and will definitely move forward.

I actually held out on the iPhone until 3Gs, and I'm glad I did! I love this thing. I would probably pay 500 bucks just for the iPod functions plus my pUniverse app that lets me see where the stars are at night as I aim the iPhone at the sky. It's mindblowingly awesome.

I usually try to avoid first generations of products *cough R1*, just because 2nd-gen is always a huge improvement. Thousands or millions of people get their hands on the product and the company gets tons of feedback. That is exactly what's going to happen with iPad.

Tom,

definitely you will map your upcoming project "SouthWest Light" project journey with iPad 3G.

Just to remind you...
