  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

APPLE store is DOWN!

OMG what an amazing disappointment.

PLEASE Mr. Jobs - just license the OS to 3rd parties and focus on what you really care about.

PCIe Slots .... are you F&*(kin' kidding me!???!

that's crazy :badputer:

Well, Brook's trip down memory lame pretty much summed it up for me. I'll still work on Macs because of the OS, but like everyone else, I am very disappointed with the hardware. Other than the processing, the Mac Pros are starting to look like dinosaurs. I get that Apple is following the money trail. I'm sure it's a smart business approach. Doesn't make me any happier as a customer. Based on what I'm seeing, I think it may be time for Apple to sell off the Pro Apps to a company that can make them top priority. This still won't solve the hardware problem though. Professionals need cutting edge machines. They need processing power and they need expandability. If Apple has made a decision internally that they don't want to cater to what they consider a small market sector, then so be it. Maybe they should consider reinstating the Mac Clone program. License the OS to a select few, Apple approved companies who could offer systems that cater directly to the professional community that has needs that go beyond what Apple can deliver. Of course, Steve Jobs was the one that killed the Clone program when he came back in '97, so maybe that will never happen on his watch. It just seems that Mac power users are going to be at a crossroads soon, and it's a place I don't want to be. I just want my Mac Pro to be leading the pack in the computer industry. I want it to be forward thinking. I want it to be the only computer I want and need. Hmmm....sounds like the kind of things I get with another company...Maybe Apple needs to add JJ to their board of directors. Just a thought.

I guess it is common knowledge that Jobs runs the co with a tight fist and he has been illl for a long time. It seems reasonable then to think that he has been spread unusually thin in the past 18 months or so, and with all of the activity in the consumer appliances the Pro division suffered. With him back on his feet, perhaps we are seeing the tail end of this trend.

Whether or not there is any truth in my assumption it seems clear that the company is weak in his absence. His team needs to be able to step up. An exceptional manager creates a team that can function without him. From my armchair, this seems to be his biggest shortcoming.

All of the passionate creatives I know suffer from white knuckle syndrome to some degree. :-)

I'm curious about Schiller. He comes off as meek at keynotes, but I always gave him the benefit of the doubt and presumed that public speaking just made him nervous. Was he chosen as Jobs' perfect #2 because he is a sheep?

Great blogpost, Brook.
If you haven't already, I would send it to Apple Feedback and/or Steve Jobs. It's very well argumented, well written, and I hope it makes them think or at least respond to some of these complaints/doubts/...

I also hope with the relationship between RED and Apple, that Jim Jannard can let some of these complaints shimmer trough at Apple.
Look at how RED started with the relationship with Apple, and look where Apple has fallen behind now... (in terms of video-production. In terms of iPhones and i-thingies they seem to doing quite well, looking at their financial results quarter after quarter).

I love Apple's computers, many of their i-Thingies, their software and especially the OS. But the design-choices they make that go against what professionals want and/or need, and the lagging of Final Cut Pro (hopefully very temporary because they promised a major update coming) is letting many people doubt. Look at how these boards a couple of years ago, with the start of RED, almost everyone recommended Apple and used Macs. Now everyone complains, at about every professional internet-forum.

Please Apple, get your act together again when it comes to the professional community. Maybe make a official statement for your users.

It makes me wonder if the development team for high end professional apple products like the Mac Pro, are even aware of the demand and need fo rthings like MORE pcie slots, faster connections, more bandwidth, more customization, better drivers support. They have to right? It's in their very nature to know these things? Or am I all wrong about that? It just boggles me utterly that they are over looking a huge client source for them. Because honestly, a mac pro may cater a lot to the casual, prosumer, and apsiring, but their 5000 dollar model and up just can't be that market it can it? That market is the professional level, company/ user. So where is it falling apart in the pipeline? I wanna slap who ever made this decision.

You are right to be mad at Apple but Intel does bear some blame too, because they don't have anything great in their workstation board designs, which are what Apple gets from them for the MacPro desktop.

It's a very well written article. The only thing i'd disagree on is your comments on QT X. I'm a Mac Dev by day (for Grass Valley) and while at WWDC last year they explained to us that QT X is a complete re-write of the ground up for QT and that they are keeping QT 7 until they can get all the QT7 features into QTX, it just takes them a long time to do it right.

Oh and let's not forget that Apple has officially discontinued their 30" Cinema Display as well as their 24" Cinema Display, leaving the glossy 27" LED Display as the only stand-alone monitor they offer now. VERY DISAPPOINTING!

How is that disappointing? The 24" and 30" ACD displays were never that good to begin with and at this point are dinosaurs. The 27" is awesome or a general use desktop LCD, but I do wish they had a matte screen option.

Either way, I've always felt the only reason to buy displays from Apple is if you're trying to impress clients by having the curtains match the carpet, so to speak. Much better screens out there for the money. I'm glad they at least kept the price on the 27" down... Although, at this point, I think I'd buy an iMad first, since the 27" can also be used as a monitor and a second computer...

Edit> Hey, I just saw I typed "iMad" instead of "iMac"... Maybe because iMad they didn't give us a way to attach decent external storage with the new update.

I love my 30" display... I think it's extremely accurate and takes calibration well. I like the fact that the display "talks" to the software so well. I can't believe that they don't offer a matte option on the new 27" but they do on the 17" laptop. I can't imaging doing any kind of critical imaging on a glossy display.

I think glossy displays make more sense on desktop monitors then laptop monitors because you have control over your environment (like being able to turn off the lights).
