  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

APPLE... Here we go.

Over in the hardware forum Kilgroe predicted this -- not that MacPro is EOL, but just the opposite -- that Apple wouldn't do a substantial change on the tower because while Intel has finally delivered the advanced hardware required for a refresh, they've really only delivered half of what they'll be delivering by the end of the year (give or take).

His view was that it was probably a good move for Apple to keep focusing on that next, truly substantial change, and that they would probably not have a real change yet. The fact that Apple actually did a minor refresh of the towers suggests strongly that they are not done with Pro Towers...

And again, its been pointed out many times that Intel has been the reason for the 2 year wait every bit as much, if not more, than Apple.

And so we keep soldiering on with a 2009 Nehelem... and thinking the new laptop is awesome!

Which states:

Probably in 2013? This does not bode well, unless it is a typo that was meant to read "Probably in Q1/2013".

Absolutely, Martin. I'm just glad I don't have major strategic calls to make right now. I'm going to wait until the end of the year, but if things haven't improved by then we'll be going back to HP for everything. I've used a ton of great HP gear over the years; sure I'd miss OSX (though not Lion), but I'd have no qualms about going back to HP hardware.

Like Jarred says, once you're in the apps there's no problem.

Ha ha, got to love RED...

But why, don't you take one of the MP Towers and do that? I surely will resist till the end before I jump ship to a Window machine... ;)

wouldn't these be standard slot spaced so they should fit into the mac pro as well!?

I still don't get though, why they didn't at least upgrade the towers to thunderbolt and usb3 to show that there's movement! well....

I sort of understand that frustration Martin but
at least Apple is making the system.

I would never say that Apple is perfect but I do give them the benefit of the doubt when it
comes to system design.

I imagine Apple (and they're partners like Intel) don't have the tech in place to produce
the system at the spec they aspire to and at the level everyone wants.

I predict that this redesigned Mac Pro will be released to heavy criticsm like most Apple products.
Then people will gradually see the considerable benefits to an approach they previously thought was insane.

Apple's product line historically follows this pattern.

Can anyone remember the backlash on this very forum when the iPad was first released.
It was frequently called a "missed opportunity".

Is there a set that doesn't have an iPad used at some point in production?

Weird the Z820 Tekserve post got deleted who'd would have thought.
I have a Z800 right beside my Mac Pro's but even with Win7 64 being much better then previous it is still not 0SX and never will be.
That said I do have my eyes on upgrading to the 820 very soon.
Apple has the user experience part hands down. If only we could have both worlds one day it would be great.
Just don't see myself plunking down 10K plus for a a machine like this. If your workflow is solely RED this is very inticing.
If that was a pic of a Thunderbolt RED mag reader my credit card would be on the table as we type.

What laptop do you use Jarred? Still mac, or PC for that as well?

I have a 17" Samsung Chronos 7 Ivy Bridge laptop that i do heavy work on right now.. for emails and the easy stuff I use a macbook, ipad, or more and more Samsung Note "big" phone.

That Samsung Note impresses me everyday. I actually did a comp edit on an ad for a magazine entirely on the note and an Ipad from the back of a New York Taxi cab yesterday.. end to end. Downloaded assets via FTP and email, did the edit with the 10 dollar Photoshop Touch app ( layers and all.. ) pushed out to dropbox, uploaded to client for approval all in one trip between Manhattan and JFK ( rush hour ) .

Pretty incredible world we live in now.

I would never give up my tower though.. nothing beats horsepower and a big screen.. and right now windows towers completely slay anything apple has on the shelf. But.. Apple completely embarrasses windows in terms of the easy stuff (usability) .. which is why right now i use whatever is the best tool.

Please check out Linux. It's such a better system that runs on PC's and you don't have to deal with Window's.
RHEL is great but if you can't get around Linux code to mount drives and do simply things you take for granted on the Mac or Windows then check out Linux Mint, its very user friendly in a Window's/Mac way.

http://linuxmint.com/

Having RedCinePro X and Rocket drivers for Linux from RED would be a dream.

There is a reason why the heavy iron runs on Linux... Autodesk Flame, Mistika, BaseLight...
