  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple destroys MacBook Pro

Well the only pro MBP left is the 17 incher. For what we do why would anyone not want a 1920x1200 res screen and an 8 hour battery? It feels like a 15 incher to me due to the slim design. I agree with the general sentiment about the lack of an ExpressCard. I was stunned when I heard they removed it. I'm sure they will introduce a 1920x1200 15 incher soon with some pro features though.

But somehow I don't believe they will. It seems they have forgotten about high-end mobile users.

I guess they think high end is the 17 incher and since they reduced the price to $2500 and increase the speed and storage... I don't think they've forgotten about us at all. That said... I will be laughing at anyone without an ExpressCard slot. :-)

This is why i predict (and have always predicted) that all you mac users will soon be crossing over to the dark side.. Where options are abundant!

I'll bet you $10 that they update the 17" with a new display, SD card slot and remove the ExpressCard slot with another "upgrade" within the next 3 or 4 months.

The Gizmodo article has it right that "Pro" doesn't mean "Pro" anymore, it's just a brand. However, I didn't think their logic and reasoning behind the article was any form of valid argument. They kinda forgot to mention that what Apple has effectively done is completly eliminate all current Apple notebook systems, save for the 17", as an option for anyone using current RED and Sony EX workflows, plus a handful of other applications. Way to go, Apple! Geniuses... Not.

As someone who doesn't do much editing work on his Mac, but will need to upgrade soon, is there no way to connect an external ExpressCard reader to the new 15" Macbook Pro?

Not that I'm aware of. But if you act fast you might still be able to pick up one of the 15" express card MBP's from one of the big Mac online retailers.

MacMall
Club Mac
Mac Connection
etc...

Good luck.

I'll take your $10 bet and even challenge you to up it to say a more respectable... $50? If the move was because of battery life I don't see why they would eliminate this slot on the 17 incher. This baby got way more than enough room for the battery.

But somehow I don't believe they will. It seems they have forgotten about high-end mobile users.

High-end mobile users are the ones who feed the ecosystems of Macs dealing with post. When Apple puts a bottleneck in an 'ecosystem' involving many, many Macs there's only a matter of time before the 'ecosystem' is replaced with another 'ecosystem' without the bottleneck. Depending on Apple's behavior, the new 'ecosystem' might not involve Macs.

I'm sooooooooo glad I bought a 15' MBP a couple weeks ago!!!
...and it was a refurb...

HaHa... I can't say the same for me buying a MBP 17" 3 weeks ago. Now I'm praying that I have 4 or 5 dead pixels. :-)

Just begged them via feedback. I'm sure that it'll go nowhere.

I don't know - there are articles complaining about it on sites like Gizmodo, and we saw what happened with Firewire being pulled from the 13 inch Macbook - it got the even faster FW port this time around.

If enough people complain, I'm sure we'll see an ExpressCard slot or an e-sata port as an option at least.

PS. that shot on your computer is stunning. :D

Let's be honest.

Computer hardware today sucks. It's commodity crap. I feel for the youth of today that grow up only knowing the Intel way of hardware. I grew up with so many computing platforms..everyone was doing their own thing. Apple, Commodor, Tandy, PC, Keypro etc.

The minute a company become a defacto standard innovation slows to a creep.

I'm not surprised that Apple cut ExpressCard ports. They attempt to cut out any ports that have a nice set of users who won't raise a loud enough stink. The least amount of components they use the higher the profit margin.

And just look at the design of laptops today in general. Brain dead.
I've got a "slow as molasses in siberia" optical drive that I use for the occasional playback/recording task taking up 6 sq inches of space!!

I've got wirless technology (Bluetooth) the was supposed to create fast ad hoc networks for "Personal Area Networks" what do people use Bluetooth for today? A fecking wireless earpiece :crying:

A Pro laptop should have at a minimum

1. A fast processor
2. Minimum two drive bays
3. Dual Ethernet
4. Wireless tech
5. External optical drive
6. Hi rez screen
7. Digital video output
8. Dedicated storage port
9. Multipurpose internal expansion
10. Optional screens matte, glossy
11. Workstation level graphics

Taking consumer gear and appending "Pro" is disengenous.

Apple destroyed the bunch of Apple VAR resellers that catered to special verticals by going direct (like Dell) though they forgot to deliver any actual flexibility in configuration.

Why is little Johnny taking the same notebook to his English 101 class that you take on location to get your work done? The two tasks are miles apart in scope yet the same hardware is in use? Lucy....you have some 'splainin to do.
