  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple Color REDCODE plugin 4.0 beta

Graeme, it's crazy how much FLUT, redgamma and redcolor have changed the look, I think it might be the biggest step up I've seen in my footage from the beginning. Thank you!

Apple better get on supporting the rocket, and FLUT/SHADOWS etc. in a hurry!

Or better yet, Red should just make their own RED specific grading package with secondaries etc. You guys just do it best!

Anyways, great work!

Cal

It didn't work too nice to me, neither. Hope Apple releases the update soon.

I know it's been mentioned repeatedly, but I second (Third? Fourth? X-th?) the "quicktimes don't work" thing. Doing a clipfinder workflow import, using proxies, I get a totally inactive RED tab. Interestingly enough, when I open an *existing* project, it works fine. Or seems to, anyways. I didn't do a whole lot of testing.

Definitely psyched to work with the new plugin, though. Threw some old footage at it, and the differences are amazing. Getting FLUT control and the various OLPF would be nice, of course, but it's awesome enough getting the new color-science support.

4.0 beta 2 is up that should fix "send to Color" and non loading QT reference files:

http://red.cachefly.net/redcinex/REDCODE_Color_v4_0_beta_2.zip

You will need to re-send from FCP, you cannot load a previously sent sequence that failed (I think Color caches which plugin / codec to load for a project, which would be why your old stuff worked Ben)

Apple have to add in the controls for that. All we do is, as Rob says, pass them the image decoded as per the settings they set.

Graeme

So Apple designs the RED tab... Red just supplies the back end code for the codec? Is it as easy as adding a parameter bias control to the interface to link to the other controls like FLUT?

What about a nodal (Color FX) plugin that would give us the Redcine-X like controls with in a node?

I like that idea. Don't think it would work, though, given where the CFX fall in the order-of-operations. Seems something like that would have to take place in the primary room.

The new version worked well.

Haven't had a chance to test yet, but looks like people are reporting success.

Anyway, I would ultimately like to see the RED tab have all the same functionality adjustment tools as in REDCINE-X. :) Don't know if that's possible... It seems that is where all the various clip control and fine-tuning should go.

Jeff: so do we

Okay, I figured out WHAT the issue is, but not sure why Color is doing this. I have a MacPro with two monitors hooked up to an ATI 2600. If I have both monitors plugged in, it gives me crap in the output at anything over 10bit. If I have just one monitor plugged in, all depths render correctly. I'm not sure if it's more of a Color issue, or if it's something to do with the RED plugin. I haven't had this happen with any other footage (non red), so it's got to deal with how color deals with RED footage through the plugin.

I agree.
Without the ability to pick white balance, the program lacks the functionality Redcine-X has. All in good time I guess. RedRocket support next?

I think both a color-picker and Rocket support would require some pretty substantial changes in the actual architecture of the program. They're not exactly things RED can just plug in.

To be honest, I don't find a color-picker for white balance all that important. I've never been a huge fan of auto white balance personally, and with a decent set of scopes, or even the ones built into color, it's remarkably easy to run do a white balance manually.

It's so funny how this just saved my ass.

I had a color correction thingie with a deadline something like 12 hours before my flight. And I just found out that 4.5K is not supported by Color, so I would've had to render over 70 full clips fully although less than a second is used from all the clips (yes, many many cuts). This would've so broke my neck.

Went to reduser.net for relief, there it is, new beta plugin. First one didn't work with send to, but so quickly later we got a proper one.

What a ride it is always with RED.

This is effing great.

Now we have to ask Apple to do their bit. Fantastic.
