  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone want to test some film stock emulation software for RED?

Rubber Monkey Software has been working on a new piece of software for emulating film. Basically it takes your red footage and alters it to match the color and grain of various stocks.

It is called FilmConvert - if anyone would like to try it out and give us some feedback, we'd really appreciate it :)

Thanks!

Do you have any video clips?

What stocks can your app simulate?

Can you explain the workflow in more detail?

Hi Brandon,

We do have video, we're not quite finished on doing the post on it but there are stills from the video here:
http://www.filmconvert.com/examples.asp

Current stocks are:
Kodak Vision 3 250D / 5027
Kodak Vision 3 200T / 5213
Fuji Vivid 160T / 8543
Fuji Eterna 250T / 8553
Fuji Reala 250D / 8563

Workflow - you can:

Process all daily footage to QuickTime before editorial for online projects
Process an edited timeline to DPX for grading with EDL / XML
Process an edited timeline to QuickTime and reconnect with EDL / XML

That said, we are open to making it a plugin for various platforms. What would you prefer to see?

Are you trying to emulate film negative, or the look of the release print?

PLEASE allow a negative emulation as well as a release print look for I believe this
will lead to much better looking prints etc. The more options the better.

Thank you for posting this and responding to my question. :)

May I also ask how the film grain is being added?

Are you using real scans of film grain?

I've suggested this to the team, should be easy to do.

The grain is scanned at 6k and then added according to grain densities across the various colors and densities.

Sapphire Film Effect plug in for FCP, After Effects, Shake, Nuke, Autodesk apps by GenArts can do everything you would need to get a proper film look.

Effect: FilmEffect

Category: Stylize

Simulates film exposure and processing to make video look like it was shot on film.

Sanjin, FilmConvert is different to 'film look' plugins. We have modeled the RED MX sensor and individual film stocks, and created lookup tables matching each hue and color to their stock equivalent.

Film look plugins have their place, but we are trying to do something a bit more scientific :)

Hi Nigel.
Please don't take this as a criticism. I just would like to explain my own position on the subject. Product like Film Convert is needed and people are clamoring for it. Personally I find Sapphire plugin not really useful, as it creates not quite realistic looking grain. On the other hand, the problem with your approach is it's another stand alone application, that one needs to use in the process. If I'm doing finishing in, say, Resolve, I would want to finish as much of it inside this particular app. And that is why, personally, I could find more useful to use something like Cinegrain. It's a bit more economical and it can be used inside pretty much any app. Now, if you come up with the way of doing stock emulation as a plugin for Avid, PPro, AE or Resolve, that would be another story.

Thanks for the feedback Jake, it's constructive and appreciated.
We know that a stand-alone product will not just slot into everyone's workflow. This is just the first release of FilmConvert.
If there is sufficient interest, we'd love to make a plugin version using the same underlying technology.
Of the 4 plugin platforms you mentioned, which do you think would be the most important? And what did you think of the grain / color of the actual algorithm?

downloading

thanks, will try it out

Plugin for Scratch six would be very welcomed as well.

Nigel,

just downloading and then will have a look what is going on with it (R1MX).

Hi Nigel, had a play.

Pros - Very easy to use, distinct effect, relatively fast
Cons - Direct from R3D means we either grade properly, using the vast controls of Resolve, RCX etc. or jam our beautiful R3d through Film Convert and that's it.

As Jake pointed out and you responded to, this really needs to be a plugiin that can be used at the end of a proper grading process to be of true use. Having said that, I was able to get a pretty good look very quickly.

My understanding is that RCX will have a plug-in structure. For me RCX and Resolve would be the top 2 successes for plug-in sales, simply because at FREE and $999, RCX and Resolve will be on the most workstations around the world very soon!

Keep us informed, really like what you're doing here.

I bought a copy of Monkey Extract and paid good money for it.

I never got a released copy, it was always in beta.

Now you guys want more money for an upgrade?

Any things you guys make from now on?

Please count me out.

I really feel like I got scammed.
