  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any word about ODEMAX from NAB 2013?

You're right about the public tweets; not too much there. But...

A cheaper Red Ray Player for viewing only would make sense. Then, anyone could download using their computer or other device, the movie or content of their choice encoded in .RED and save it on a flash drive. Then just plug the flash drive into the stripped down version of the RR Player and watch the movie on a 4k display or projector.

Wouldn't even need a HDD since everything could be stored on a thumb drive.

Why would I want to do that instead of just watching an H.265 directly on the 4K display or projector or computer?

Even if .RED is slightly more efficient per megabit... I'd rather just set my TV to download or stream the H.265 data.

I have to pay $1700+ for what, exactly? The joy of copying files to a flash drive?

Bruce, my suggestion was for a cheaper solution than the $1700 full fledged player. I can't tell you why going .RED will be better than H.265... that's not in my Knowledge Base. '-)

(Maybe one reason why .RED will be better IMO is because all my output will be encoded .RED '-)

Sounds like Terry is in on it as well...

Sorry guys, can't post anything about it, your best luck is to reach out to ODEMAX...Elsie, you're probably going to want to make an exception in this case *winkwink*

following, but not seeing anything specific yet.

Also, if you check the website you'll see the difference to the last month or so.

All I can say is that I'd follow them on Twitter right away and I'd keep a close eye on their web site for the next several days. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Nobody that owns content is ever going to stream 4K H.265 directly to a TV or computer. There is no security, the stream could be easily ripped off. The .red method has merits because you need the Red Player to play it back, copy it all you like, it doesn't matter. I'm sure there'll even be meta data in the .red file that even restricts you from copying the .red file and giving it to your mate who also owns a RedRay Player.

Could someone explain the content ratings on the Odemax site. Quality and Maturity are the categories rated. Perhaps we should rate posts this way as well.

Odemax already sent me a double 00 rugby jersey. I'll wear it with pride.

I Googled that and came up with nothing.

A joke Elsie. A 0 for quality and a 0 for maturity. Double zero. The six films they have or had on one of their web pages rated the films for quality and maturity on a scale of 0 to 5 for each category. The quality was all rated at one and maturity from 1 to 3.

Ohhhh, I get it. Sorry I hadn't delved into their website that deeply yet. Figured I would wait until there's more info. I assume they will explain what the terms really mean... someday.

Coming soon? They must be in partnership with Red. Did they actually use those words? So will the beta launch be with beta Redrays which are coming soon? Its been almost a full six months since Red first said on its pre order page that the Redray was coming soon. Anyhow that's great news for those still interested in getting a Redray and buying content through Odemax. I wish them well. Larry you should consider yourself special in them actually answering an email. If I had to guess you would be a content provider rather than an end viewer? They have to get content before they can attract end viewers. Of course they can't do any distribution without Redrays being out there to receive the content. And we have known since December that the Redray is coming soon. To the best of my knowledge they never answered any consumer end user emails. Ny guess is that coming soon for Odemax means as soon as the Redray starts shipping which really I expect to be imminently, like this week or next.

Mark, while the RedRay Player may be the primary content partner, I got a hint from reading some of the new postings (from ODEMAX when they advertised for the first 100 channels) that there could be a way to view the content that suggested other than RedRay. This was just my interpretation so don't make book on it or anything.

FWIW the mass market is heading for an H.265 environment for both UHD and HD. In the short term the primary benefit will, hopefully, be better HD IQ within current bandwidth delivery envelopes. As a point of reference, H.265 is promoted as roughly 4 times more efficient than H.264.

IAC, the RedRay/.RED/Odemax play is promoted as being able to achieve another four fold improvement in IQ per bit over H.265. How? More complex encoding methodology that embeds more information and requires more processing horsepower to decode, i.e., RedRay hardware. The crux of the argument for the greater costs associated with the RedRay based ecosystem is to attain quality levels, at real world bit rates, that fulfill the promise of UHD/4K.

Cheers - #19
