  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Here are a couple clips at 5K WS 60fps. 16;1 compression 1000iso DragonColor / Redlogfilm

HD H264 from Resolve . Tiny bit of sharpening / Noise reduction. plus a quick contrasty saturated grade .

Ill do a proper test soon. for now just some flowers / cats in the back yard :p

Nice! What lens did you use?

Camera came in friday. I havn't had the chance to shoot much, but here's a quick test of a hat shot at 5k ws, 7:1 compression. Nothing extreme.

The dynamic range is fantastic, and noise isn't horrible at all if properly exposed.

Does anyone have side by side. From all the dragon r3d's I've played with I have not really seen anything monumental yet. Thoughts?

Really? I've personally seen some phenomenal Dragon R3D's. A lot of Toia's recent work has been jaw dropping, to say the least.

here are some of the harsher situations I've shot in with scarlet x. and still had lots of range. just trying to get clarification

2/7/14 - To update the below, I installed the beta firmware and blackshaded to different settings, eg : highspeed framerates, you can do 4. This has improved things quite alot. Will test more tomorrow. If your on the release firmware use the blackshade for current exposure rather than the default.

I have been doing some tests with my S.D and have to say the dr, and colour are really great, footage looks like what I see with my eye, natural, neutral. For film projects I am super excited, the perfect look for me, but in more corporate or doc style shoots I have concerns about the grain, not noise (a differentiation that is important) and the sharpness (not detail) and low light, I'm not going to say anything more than I feel 1280 is as far as i feel comfortable with.

In truth the grain is ever present and quite nice, a feel of film is there. But I know if I go to a job where people are used to sony f55, where they have a super clean, overly sharp picture they will see the S.D footage and think, why is it soft and noisy. So I have been playing with the unsharp mask in rcx and neat video in fcpx. The footage transforms and can certainly hold its own against that type of look but the effort is intense, and when alls you want to do is hand off footage and not spend hours extra trying to sharpen and de grain, this could be a big pain. It would be great to have a feature in camera to address these two point. In the next couple of days I'll put some footage together when I get a bit more tests under my belt. You can even get a resonable 120fps 2k footage, but alot of processing to get to it.

Every thing is pure so you have to work to achieve a look, this is the great thing about raw but if your under pressure can be a pretty big pain.

Has any one had similar experiences ??

Thanks
Ian

I found some new Scarlet Dragon footage today. I will say that it is noisy, but take all of these into consideration: the lens he was using was a f/4, shooting 60fps, so 1/120 shutter, with no extra lights, and it was dark already. I'm assuming ISO was pushed pretty far. Plus, nothing a little Noise Reduction couldn't fix, imo. Once the chroma noise is fixed, the noise will look natural.

It's still kind of hard, but I will be ordering my Scarlet Dragon on Monday, since I do have a project coming up. Just wish I could be more confident in the purchase is all. Lack of footage, and lack of Firmware news. Hope it all pans out.

What type of filtration and lens are you using with the camera?

barely nothing, only a Sigma 17-50 2,8 ...... ISO 250, stopped down to f22, because ND not yet received ....

Can you post a r3d still. If your at a f22 on the lens that will explain the softness in the image as the lens losses sharpness after f11.

I see - surprise, surprise .....
I am in the office right now, will post r3d when at home, thx for your help - much appreciated

Also do you have auto white balance enable on the side handle? Seems like your tint was change pretty bad. Usually auto white balance comes default on the side handle and it always a bad place for it as your always hit it at the wrong time.

unsure about that, don't think so .... maybe

It's usually there as default on the keys, so you would need to change the key yourself to take it off. It's usually the first thing I do when I have to sub rent bodies. It's always annoying when you pick it up and bump into the auto white balance by mistake.

OK ... first thing to do for me tomorrow ...
