  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

my EPIC & SCARLET case design is coming together, looking tuff.

I love the RED Pelican EPIC Case that came with my EPIC M cameras, only problem is it wont carry my extra REDvolt batteries, a RED Brick battery, SSD cards, travel chargers, power cables, eSata / FW800 cables, AC adapter, and extra small items.

So I took a long time and worked very hard with a case maker to custom design and dial in my own EPIC / Scarlet case which will contain all of the above, a few zoom lenses, a clip-on mattebox, some small tools and storage space for other small items.

All in 1 sweet flight case on wheels.

I felt the case is so nice, I dont want to outgrow it so I made it with 3 section pieces.

(note section 1 and section 3 have been swapped in the final box being made, Lenses will be on the right not the left side as depicted in the wood drawing layout)

1st section left side will contain the accessories box for loose cables, power adapter and small items along with tools.
2nd section center will contain the Camera body along with all its essentials. Thats Camera Body with sidehandle, 6 SSD cards, 6 REDvolts, 2 Travel chargers, 5.0 LCD touch screen, 1.8 SSD card reader, Bomb EVF,
3rd section right side will contain my 17-50mm RED Pro zoom lens, 11-16 Duclose zoom lens, and a REDmattebox

I know with time my lens selection will change or grow. I may want to stick another lens in there and or change my lenses. Thats why I made it in sections so I can swap it out with a new foam design therefore allowing me to replace it or change my mind in the future.
Therefore I wont have to affect, destroy or disturb my center section of the camera stuff.
Its a modular system kinda.

This case allows me to keep it All-In-1. I just roll up with this case, my sticks and im ready to shoot.

Ill post pics when its finished and rocking the goods
enjoy.

Nice job!! I do a lot of travel outside the US and I try to keep everything under 50lbs, something tells me that beast will be around 75 or 80?

I remember the good old days where we would travel with 50 cases and get charged a whole $0.00

Your right, thats why I had to have it on wheels so I could just roll it around.
Its helping me keep organized and saves me from a minimum of 4-5 cases to lug around.
1 EPIC M case
powers and cables either in a box or case or hand loosely
2 Lens cases could consolidate to 1 case if i have one made or something
1 Mattebox case or box to carry it in

50 cases no charge I never got to do that bout sounds like woah.

I would be interested in knowing the final weight when loaded up. The airlines are getting to be a pain anymore, just cam back from South Africa on Delta and had to rearrange things at check in, their new limit is 32Kg per case. Which is not very much at all, but they did not charge me anything extra even though I had 5 cases with me.

Ill let you know what it weights when its all together.

Thanks.

Nice work. Looks rock solid and really reliable. Also interested in the weight as I have to travel with a bunch'o'gear.

Thanks
If it makes it for airline weights I may be very interested in a case from your guy as well. Is he doing laser cut foam?

Do you really check in your cases (Epic) to to baggage compartment. My phaseone p40+ and phaseone df body came out broken two months ago... KLM....

What is the airline weights?

On the laser cut foam, great question I just asked and he said for me to get things laser cut it would take a large amount of cases to be made something like 50. For now I am happy with the cutting machines hes using for the foam.

However If a group buy of 50 or more is something that could happen Ive got 4 more EPICS that need cases.
Perhaps when this ones done ill see how many may want to buy some with me on the next batch.
If its enough cases ill try and get them laser cut.

As far as checking in the cases.
I have done it in the past with my REDoneMX
However i didn't actually leave the camera body in the case.
I kept it along with my zoom lens , a battery, a Raid drive, and LCD in my carry-on backpack.
If anything where to happen to my case or even lost, whats most valuable and allows me to keep shooting was in my hands at all times.

Thanks for the ideas.

I have learned it the hard way :)

Thanks for sharing your case design!

A lesson I learnt from my Red One was that breaking the camera down and packing away into individual compartments means lots of time packing and setting up. I think with my Epic (when it arrives) I will try to make a case that allows me minimum setup and pack down - just open the case, pop a lens on, battery and SSD in and be ready to shoot. I think I have had my days removing LCDs, EVFs etc.

I agree with you BigLu that one case is a great way to go !

I'd love to get a custom case made for my gear, but I am very much partial to Pelican cases.

+1 with Tim. Would love a bag/case that would hold an assembled Epic minus the lens. That way I can grab it turn it on and by the time it is up and running the lens will be on and I can start shooting. My only concern is the LCD, don't want to have the face bang into the handle or other gear. Did that once and lost it for a week while in for repair. Was thinking about a hard plastic cover for the LCD, something that would either slide on or snap on from the front. Given the volume of Epics and Scarlets out there or on order I think the ROI on a mold would be cost justified. Any thoughts?

A hard plastic cover for the LCD is a great idea. I certainly would be interested in one.

1 step closer.

Foam is cut, tested and inserted.
Almost finished.

Hi Tim,
I understand and hear you clearly on that.
I felt the same way on my REDone.
But something very positive and pleasing to experience with the EPIC and its setup.
Breaking down is actually nothing nearly as time consuming as the REDone. Same for setting it up and building it.
Having the ViewFactor plates and side-handle already on the camera body makes everything else a synch.
All I do is mount it onto the tripod, open the side handle place a REDvolt into it, put the Touchscreen LCD ontop, put an SSD card into the body. Hit power ( which takes about 10seconds to boot up) Put on my Lens and im up n running. Its fast.

Breaking it down and putting it into the case is just as easy.
As time goes on if i can safely have the LCD on the body in the case set up and breakdown, times will be ridiculously fast. I may modify my foam to accommodate that.

Thanks
Luis

Here are the final touches to my EPIC case with everything I need ready to roll.
All hand made with pains taking adjustments and re-re design over and over till i got it to the way i want it.

Its solid very protective and strong.

Some people are asking me for specs on the measurements for my cut out.
Sorry guys I dont have any measurements to give ya it was all hand designed and lots of it was cut with a blade by hand to make it fit just perfect.

Thanks
LUIS
