  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any more Dragon upgrades make it out yet?

I've got not problem waiting. I've got an Epic M that works all the time and I get beautiful images out it.
I'm also incredibly excited to have my camera upgraded so I can blow away my current clients as well as future ones.
It would be cool if we heard a quick status update just so we might be able to plan for the upgrade.
At the very most, if my camera was in for the upgrade and I had a job come up, I'd just sub rent a body. No big deal.

Agreed. I am still loving my current Epic
 
I'm in no rush. I look at it this way: when my competitors get their Dragons I will be maybe obligated by at least some of my clients to pay for the upgrade, or else loose that rental fee to another house, even for my own jobs. Until then I can make money rather than spend it. The longer Dragon takes the longer I have to amortize my current Epic, which has yet to break even, as many clients, rightly or wrongly, request other cameras for their shoots, and the Epic rental market in Montreal and Toronto has been truly horrendous, marred by Scarlet, BM cameras, and myriad other competitors which are not good enough for my own shoots, but totally fine for the shoots of many of my rental clients.

Meanwhile our Epic has never been the weak link of any shoot, and is indeed more than good enough for everything we do, especially since we've gotten very good at grading around its slight color shortcomings, and never shoot at night run-and-gun with no lights, so have no need to set the camera at 4000 ISO.

I agree the long wait is not so bad as the Epic holds its own against most of its competitors with only the larger and more expensive F65 and Alexa outperforming it on a few key parameters. My worst nightmare is a slow rollout of Dragon where some people have Dragons and others MX cameras. In TVC production cameras can easily perceived as dated and dead in the water as the Red One was with the release of the Epic. Once the upgrade programme starts in earnest I hope it as quick and efficient as the Red One MX upgrade programme was.
From what information and imagery I have seen of the Dragon upgrade the Epic will be come a cinematographers most powerful tool yet.
 
I believe that the Red team is being really serious about QC and not letting anything else but perfect out of the factory..... I applaud their diligence with this.... Remember that this is not just a sensor board upgrade. They are replacing most of the internal boards of the camera....

This is no beta......
 
I'm not going to be able to afford the upgrade until March or April any way plus I am at the very bottom of the list, but I sure hope things start ramping up soon.

At this rate the Dragon will be obsolete by the time it becomes commonly available. ;] Why cant tell us whats keeping them up?

For some out here in Hollywood its already in the wild and being used.

My friend got his two last week along with a RR-X.

Give it a few months and everyone will have one.

They're working hard to get it out in the best working condition it can be in.

And no it won't be obsolete Arri still hasn't released a 4K camera nor the F55 4K back so Red is totally fine be patient its coming....
 
after going bananas for shooting various projects on both Scarlet and Epic, i decided to simply wait for Dragon to finally join the Red family. it's been longer than expected, but my experience is not unique. would i like the Dragon sooner than later? sure, but the only people who know that more than even myself? the outstanding folks at Red. patience is indeed a virtue.
 
Are there any Dragons in Canada yet? Specifically, Toronto?

I was thinking of starting a new thread asking, but don't know if it'd be appropriate. I'd love to spend some time with one, even if it means standing in the background just watching someone else use it (I tend to learn way more about a camera seeing the shooting conditions/environment/light, rather than just seeing the footage that was captured...)

An honest update from Red with actual hard facts on Dragon would really mean a lot to the loyalists. I am losing my faith and have canceled my order for Dragon and Rocket-X. We all need an update. I don't care if Dragon is ready tomorrow, next year, or never. Just tell us what's happening instead of leaving your customers in the dark. We will plan accordingly if we have some information. Please.

I don't want to argue, but most other companies only announce a product when its ready, therefore giving you no idea whats coming and when it will be there. So Red letting us know there is an upgrade for us all is just plain nice and not at all what the rest of the industry would do.

I am happy to wait for my Dragon upgrade. The extra time before the upgrades start allows my investment in the current Epic earn more :)

+1 Because the idea of the "Red family" is an illusion. Loyalty only goes one way unless you are famous. I'm sick of it.

+1 I haven't cancelled my (already paid for) upgrade, but my eyes are wide open to the reality of aligning oneself with this company moving forward, and I cannot guarantee supporting them in the future when they refuse to support me.

How famous is your friend, Cid?
 
With all due respect, its not like you don't already have cameras guys... Who cares if some of us might not receive it this month, or next? If one really has an issue with this, then try to buy a Carbon Dragon today and skip the line... I personally like the upgrade program, sure it takes a lot of man hours to swap out all the sensors, but I much rather wait around then have to buy a whole new camera, IE like with Arri, Sony, Canon, what have you... So guys don't get too down on the process, its a lot better then rebuying the same camera with minor spec increases, over and over... Look at our motion mount vs Alexa Classic/Studio. Some companies make you buy a whole new camera for a shutter! Personally I am quite happy to wait, if it means I don't need to buy a new body constantly... I'll wait for Dragon, and for my Motion Mount and whenever they come they come and that'll be fine by me...
