  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any more Dragon upgrades make it out yet?

Or has anyone else been asked to send in their Epic to start the upgrade?

Last they said they were gonna start it out slowly this month, give it some time.

I was told 'low sensor yield' until end of month, then they will ramp up. I have two to upgrade so looking forward to it.

Plus, IIRC they are going to start selling new Dragons when the M Dragon upgrade is finished. So Epic X owners should factor that into our anticipated update time frame. In other words, don't put off any shoot in anticipation of doing it with Dragon unless you have an M camera or can buy new. At least, that's the way I see it.

There's certainly a few more out there in the wild as we've seen pictures of them on set now. Slow start, but patience.

One extremely cool thing, and I really need to express extremely here, Red has done a tremendous job working with 3rd party software companies to get Dragon support in ahead of the bigger launch. This is actually the first time that I can recall this has happened.

Really looking forward to those first weeks with the camera and dropping material into the October 15th update to Adobe CC and the newer version of Resolve 10.

This truly does make the camera production ready to go from day one in my mind. Well played RDC.

I'm still waiting too but...

This was a great plan on their part. I literally have people calling every few days to ask if they can rent my Dragon. Good to know they will have a post workflow right off the bat.

Anyone heard how the Dragons are performing on the movie sets where they are working?

Sensor yield problem, maybe . I wonder who the foundry is these days ?

There's a point, where fans can no longer ignore the execution problems RED has. I'm one of the biggest fans of RED. The way they broke up the Sony pricing structure was priceless. However, they need to Ship or get off the pot.

I hear what your saying Thomas. To my purchasing knowledge, Sony never released a camera that you can upgrade.

Having the ability to upgrade is probably something only RED has been doing, at least to the major extent that each upgrade makes the camera better. In that light, there is no one like RED in the camera business.

The team is taking their time with their cameras, isn't that what we want? They could have released a "better" version months ago. As a customer and as someone making your living, or a part of it, off shooting these cameras, wouldn't you rather just keep shooting your Epic for now and get a QUANTUM LEAP upgrade with Dragon?

When it comes to craftsmanship, compromise, dulls the fine and this "instrument" is going to be the fine creator of images and films for some fantastic stories in the next years, mine included.

You can't have it both ways

You can't have it both ways

One's POV is essentially always a "compared to what" equation. The Dragon only seems "late" because we've all known about it for a while.

Do companies sometimes "preview" new tech so you will wait for it rather than buying their competitors current offerings? I think we all know the answer to that. Has RED overplayed that strategy? Perhaps. I guess I'm copacetic with it, not because I'm a fanboy, but because they are so aggressive in pushing the tech forward rather than using their tech portfolio as a marketing strategy to manage replacement cycles.

Cheers - #19

I suspect something arose where some of the sensors they were getting in were just not good enough... or something to that effect.

But even if it were a planned delay of the current length after the announcement, I'm o.k. with that because it has given me and probably many others the time needed to make arrangements for the funds to pay for the upgrade.

Still, I'd bet something came up that wasn't known that has caused the delay.
