  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing WEAPON DRAGON 6k Magnesium

So all specs in terms of frame rate and resolution and image quality are same as Epic Dragon.

You gain about a stop in compression with Mag Weapon.

Carbon Weapon does 100 at 8:1 at WS

Almost exactly same as Epic Dragon in terms of Image Quality.

From the e-mail, my understanding is this.

Trade in your (in my case) Scarlet-Dragon and get $2500 credit.
If you purchased before Today you get an additional $2500 credit.
Totalling $5000 in credit.

Now place your order before the end of NAB and pay the deposit within the 10days of the end and get $5000 acc. Credit.

Thus you have $10,000 in credit for the upgrade.
So the Weapon costs $35,000 with some accessories, according to Red's store. And Jarred I read earlier said the $5000 acc. credit would be reflected in there taken off the accessories. So now its $30,000 for whatever is left.
Take the $5000 from your trade-in and it becomes $25,000 for Weapon.

Not bad, IMO, and it gets better for Epic-Dragon owners.

Let me know if I got my math wrong or info wrong. I want to know where I stand as well.

I love my red epic mx. Leading up to the weapon release i was thinking should i go dragon so i can get a weapon? After seeing the specs i am very disappointed. I feel sadly my epic mx will be the last red that i own. I feel that red is just getting more and more pricy, while other companies are catching up and offering things at a fraction of the price. Needless to say red customer service and products are like no other. I am very impressed with the red experience.

Ouch!! After reading through everything, can't say I'm too happy about what's being offered. Especially after selling a kidney and first born to do the Dragon upgrade just last week.

I can only imagine it will split the owners into two groups since most of us (or at least some of us here) can't afford to spend this kind of money on an upgrade, again.

With the RED community being split into two groups. Sometime in the near future.....

haha, well put!!

..more hurry up and buy "variable" pricing. im currently on my ass because i felt forced to upgrade to dragon during the December price drop, despite it being a bad time for me to do so..but they dropped the price again immediately after i'd upgraded..so i feel jerked around

so..

.. Mpeg4 support.. WOW!..we're all going backwards..

..so basically , for the money, i could complement my epic with a CION and get that global shutter and skewless ability to record lasers, sirens and lightening..all the stuff dragon can't handle..and have two eggs in two baskets..

6k at a few frames per second more..

sorry.. underwhelmed

mini XLR inputs on the body would have been good..

Side SSD for camera: 1500 (Why they did not include this in the upgrade is beyond me)

Huh? Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're talking about, the Side SSD you claim isn't included in the upgrade is what RED is calling the Integrated Media Bay (is it not?). It's in the pics for the upgrade, attached to the camera.

But Terry, I disagree with your disagreement. I know people talk about how you need to do away with the "value" of your camera, but...

You paid about $8,000 for a Scarlet-MX body new from RED.com, upgraded that to a Scarlet-Dragon for $9,500 - a Scarlet body value total of $17,500 - a body that was selling new for $14,500. Essentially, you paid $3,000 more to keep your Scarlet body and hours.

Now, that $17,500 camera you hold in your possession? It's being valued down to $5,000 - a loss of $12,500.

$5,000 towards a Weapon magnesium body that, without accessories, would be about $29,000 new. So, you take your $5k savings, and you're getting Weapon for $24,000.

You've essentially paid $41,500 ($17.5k + $24k with the savings) to keep with the upgrade route.

I'm ready to be reamed out by everyone that wants to justify "working" the camera, but money is money. I'd be livid if I just upgraded to a Scarlet-Dragon from an MX during the past month to "stay in the game"

Isn't it rather silly to look at the $8K I spent on my camera 3 years ago and suggest it is only a cost with no benefits? Is that three years of camera ownership worth nothing? If that was the case, no one should ever buy anything; because eventually it's value will go down. Like I said, if this were a stock purchase, I guess it might be "a bad investment" because it isn't now worthy more than I paid for it. How is that even close to a reasonable evaluation?

The encouragement given to people to make the upgrade is a little odd given the prices and the speed at which offers evaporate.

The encouragement seems like a very odd and/or a very bad idea.

I'm going to buy a Motion Mount (global shutter and integrated NDs), a BM Video Assist (5" 1080p touch with 10 bit 4:2:2 ProRes) and a used sidehandle to replace my RED lcd, keep using the Hotlink with FOOLCONTROL and with all that create my own Weapon at a fraction of the price.

I don't know, the more I think about it the more it makes sense.

The pricing and lack of features (to us that don't need what Weapon offers) keeps the Dragon value basically intact.

Think about it, adding TOO much to Weapon and having it be only $5,000 to upgrade would have KILLED Dragon value. They didn't cannibalize the line and for those of us that plan on staying put...we should be pretty stoked about that.

Believe it or not, I think it was an EXTREMELY safe and logical move. LOL. We have come to expect such groundbreaking things from RED that, in comparison, this seems corporate and predictable.

The game changer is Vista, the Weapon is just diversification and luckily the did it without killing us that have no need to diversify yet.

The real QUESTION for me is.....

Will the WEAPON Magnesium have a 6K or similar sensor upgrade option in the future?
Perhaps something like a Dragon2 or similar 6K sensor.

I need to know now, because I'm not sure I would pay to upgrade to WEAPON Magnesium if it is only
the Carbon Fiber WEAPON that will have new sensor upgrade options....!!!

You mean "8K sensor upgrade option"

my feeling too.. just know.. the motion mount loses you a stop and a half, and only works for limited fps/ shutter combinations .. but i agree.. money better spent ..

No.... 6K or even 5K.

In other words... Will the WEAPON M have sensors made for it in the future that I can upgrade to?
This sensor does not need to be VistaVision or 8K etc.

what id like to know.. is will the epic dragon have a 6k upgrade option (ie, a future sensor upgrade .. or is it excluded from the FUTURE) ?

or is epic dragon obsolete in terms of upgradeability without a weapon body?

preferably a 4.5k sensor with larger, more sensitive photosites ..
