  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing the RED TOUCH 7" @IBC14

Frankly, I've never had a mis-judged focus because of the 5.0 TOUCH.
The 1:1 feature pretty much insures focus is dead on - even on the 5.0.
I'm confident 100% when double-checking the focus this way.

True. I should have clarified that while shooting it's more reliable on the 7" with focus peaking.

Agreed. And that's why I use it. However, what I'd say is without the Focus Check enabled on the 7.0" LCD the picture is far clearer and easier to read. Hard to describe, but that's why I checked it out in the RSH Store first.

Must say this hasn't been my experience. I've definitely missed focus just marginally on more than a few occasions. Usually this happens most when shooting interviews on DSLR glass and changing focal lengths in between questions. Being that you're rolling the entire time and lots of DSLR glass isn't parfocal (that is, holds focus even when changing focal length) it means you're constantly refocusing by eye without the option to bump in 1:1 to double check. Being able to punch in 1:1 while rolling is still probably my most missed feature coming from the days of old on an EX1 :P

That said, it's never off by a huge margin - but certainly enough to annoy me when back in the edit suite watching it on the plasma. Ha ha.

Anyway, all of this to say that if I had the spare cash, I think the 7.0" OLED would be an instant purchase for this scenario alone :)

Me too. Reading elsewhere on this board that one of the reasons the PRO I/O module runs so hot is because it independently debayers the image, I had a hope that I could use one monitor on the BRAIN to see the full image and a second monitor on the PRO I/O to see the 1:1 image. Alas, both monitors change resolution when either monitor changes resolution. So much for independent debayering.

Still, I remain hopeful that the much higher resolution of the 7" means that it will give me more accurate indications of in-focus-ness, and that I can better guess my way to sharp focus than I could while running with the 5". I really wish it were possible to feed the center 1920x1080 of any shot out the SDI wire so that I could do 1:1 monitoring on a SmallHD monitor.

How's the new 7" in sunny outdoors situations?

It's bright enough, but there's glare from the glossy finish. So you really need a hood to cut the glare.

What I've done on every monitor I own is cut a Matte Screen protector to size over the display to cut glare. I've had one on my 5" Touch since I bought it and it makes a HUGE difference. Also, just got one for the Atomos Shogun and it turns a screen finish that's almost impossible to view into something that actually works outdoors.

I'm not sure why all screens are glossy for applications that are critical on IQ, but that's what we've got across all platforms and the best solution seems to be the Matte Screen protectors.

Yeah but every matte screen protectors will cut the contrast/black level considerably...which brand do you like the most?

Yeah, everything has it's trade offs, I find that I don't notice the contrast cut too much. I do go nuts looking at background reflection though. You can get cheap ones on Amazon, but the best ones are the PowerSupport Matte versions. You can barely see it, but it completely eliminates glare.

Every LCD I've ever used has issues in broad daylight, I mean that's par for the course and standard stuff really.

The screen is glossy and a good sunshade is the way to go, but I've certainly been able to manage it without a shade during the day.

Also, since getting the 7.0" LCD Touch it's been on my camera. Been shooting with it for about a month straight and made the switch on this job. Considering my love for the 9.0" that's pretty high praise. The extra resolution and color performance are extremely nice.

I hate to say something as abstract as this, but the size just feels really right. Don't really know how else to explain it. It feels comfortable.

So last Friday I finally placed an order for the 7" monitor. That very afternoon I received the tracking information from FedEx, I'd asked for second day delivery. IT SHIPPED THE SAME DAY FOLKS! OK, maybe not earth-shattering, but it was quite a fun surprise, since knowing they had been on backorder for quite some time.

RED is full of surprises these days, that is for certain!
