  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing Scarlet-W

It's tricky because on paper the two cameras sound very similar. I've seen a bunch of people here posting about how mad they are that they own an Epic when they could have waited to buy the S-W and saved 30k. I'm coming from the FS700 so this is a lot of new info to soak up.

Ultra noob question coming in hot!! Will there be any image quality difference between the Scar-W at 5K vs the Epic at 5K? There's so much info, but my understanding is that the Scar-W is the same as the Epic but without the higher frame rates and of course 6K. What other major differences might there be between these two as well? Looking to purchase my first RED and the Scar-W sounds perfect, so just trying to gather as much info as I can. Thanks in advance.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, Phil Holland. But I asked Phil this exact same question and his reply was that at 5K and at the same compression ratio, the image from both cameras will look identical in quality.

Certainly not a noob question if you haven't used the upcoming cameras.

The Dragon sensor is used in Epic Dragon, Scarlet Dragon, Weapon, Scarlet-W, and Raven.

In terms of pixel size and if 4K and 4K for instance matches from one camera, yes they are the same format size and resolution. That's actually good news for people mixing and matching cameras.

There has been various improvements to the DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] however that yield a slightly higher quality image, but they are alarmingly similar. Basically a slight improvement in Dynamic Range, Sensitivity, Image Noise/Texture/Grain, and vastly improved performance when it comes to artifacts like CMOS Smear and Highlight IR Orbs. Some of these are "slight" things to some, but are "big" things for others.

The improvements come mainly in the form of the internal hardware and optical path of the DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] bodies.

Thanks for the reply Phil, really appreciate it. That's pretty insane that for $10K you can get a body that matches the image quality (or comes hella close) to that of an Epic Dragon when shooting in the same resolutions. Do I also understand this right, on the S-W when shooting 5K you're getting the full 35mm sensor, but when shooting less than 5K you're cropping into the sensor?

Correct, if shooting at 5K FF you are essentially shooting Super 35mm in width and a format that's pretty much it's equivalent. When shooting at lower resolutions you are cropping/windowing in on the sensor.

So when shooting say 4k or 2k does the image degrade at all? Noticing that you can only shoot in 2k Prores how do you anticipate that image coming out?

Well it's a 2K ProRes file, that's what to anticipate.

You lose the flexibility of REDCODE RAW like adjusting white balance and ISO via metadata. Also, resolution is a difference and there's a slight quality difference to ProRes and .R3D based on what compression ratio you are shooting at.

is 8:1 the lowest compression you can get at 5k? Even at 24(23.98)fps?

what was up with those square cases they made for the epics, they go $50 on ebay now, are they horrible?
i was thinking of a tiny case like that for raven...

They are ok, but doesn't compare to a pelican style case that you can throw around on set.

They're OK for sending the camera back to RED for repair or upgrade. But for production, its not practical. Unless of course you're camera is always stripped down.

I'm getting anxious for my scarlet w, last we heard it was feb 14 for beginning shipping(i put my deposit down within the first hour so i'm assuming i would be up there).
did you put it down for raven or scarlet first, because there are at least a few dozen on this forum alone that switched and they are the very first in line.

Scarlet-W Bundle preorders come with the new case :)
