Announcing Scarlet-W

Wow. Happy freaking Holidays!

I'm not a Scarlet Dragon owner but that is seriously amazing of RED to offer what they are to current owners. You people certainly know how to please your customers.

So, without seeming like the complete noob that I kind of am, what is the crop factor on this new camera???

No crop. At 5K the sensor is equivalent to Super 35mm motion picture camera gate size.
Hi Daniel. Thanks. I thought I understood that Super 35mm was a 1.6x crop like a Canon 7D and so many other cameras.

That´s really a cool offer for Scarlet-D owners.
As I did the step from Scarlet-X to Scarlet-D and then to Epic-D this year i´m just wondering if there will be a future Epic camera somewhere down the road or will this be fully replaced by weapon at some point?
I was just thiunking if it would have been better to keep the Scarlet-D with this path coming right now.

Danielle is speaking in terms of the traditional film community. There is no such thing as "crop" if the sensor is the same size as standard motion picture film gate.

WOW, This is an amazing announcement!! The Scarlet will always have a very special place in my heart, I bought it while living in my parents basement. A year later I was shooting a feature Doc on Forrest Lucas from Lucas Oil which is on track to coming to Netflix in 2016.

Here is that gray beauty in action:

Anyone on the edge about investing in RED, I can tell you from personal experience, don't hesitate. No other camera comes close. If you want the absolute best image, everything else is a DISTANT second.

A little late to the party. ;) Thank you RED. Especially Jarred for that move of pushing it out so early. Big surprise for christmas. Awesome man, you again prove to be most customer-friendly company in the business.

Scarlet-W looks exactly like the camera that lots of users have asked for when WEAPON came out, even more. The RAVEN spoiled us a little here with the tech-specs and maybe i'm a little disappointed to see the 6k go away, no surprises like more fps in 5k (60?) and no 5.5kWS motion mode (like the later added 4.5kWS on RAVEN ;). But thats probably unrealistic dreaming, i admit. Nope, Scarlet-W as it is specced out right now looks really awesome, 4.5k & 4k on speed and better compression, plus the lighter new body-design, prores, wlan and all... Hell yes, thats it. The 2500 deal for existing Dragon Scarlet owners on top is a very kind offer. To be honest, i was planning to stay with REDVOLTs, not move to V-Locks, but this package deal is hard to resist.

Lots of consideration going on here. ;)

All in all the DSMC²-lineup looks complete now and truly awesome. Congratulations RED and thank you for filling that important gap.

The biggest surprise is the monochrome version, we have finally a proper monochrome camera in reach for a lot more people. Thats huge and very tempting. I'll put that on my wishlist. :)

Party... i always imagine those things as party and reading this thread was real fun, Jarred proudly announcing a new baby early, Brent critically looking over him, Jm somewhere in the VIP-area discussing with Phil and the masses on the floor drooling over that new fantastic piece of technology.

Well done, thank you. You'll get my order asap. :)

Kind of confused here. I have an epic dragon, but 20k to upgrade to weapon was just too much for me.

Now there is Raven-w at $5k. Scarlet-w at $10k and Weapon at $50k. am I reading this right?

EDIT. I see the Weapon MG at $30k. Makes sense now.

Yeah, I think a lot of people have the general feel of "wow, Weapon is kind of too expensive" and now, "wow, Raven [and Scarlet-W] are kind of too cheap."

Oh well.

As "many" people I'm waiting for my weapon woven carbon, hope to get it before the first shipping of Scarlet's!
Scarlet's price is really low, lucky you! I start to think that the weapon carbon price seems to be to much expensive in comparison...

There is always crop factor. Since motion picture film took a photography negative and rotated it, therefore creating a 1.5x smaller frame. And since photographic 35mm was actually smaller than the original silver plates.... Whether you prefer not to use that term because it is too much "photography" related and not enough "film community", it is a different story.
My 2 cents. Adjusting for a changing fast pacing developing world and using additional terminology is good. There are now 4 different sensor wafer sizes within the dragon lineup only (8k, 6k, 5k, 4.5k). Each of them will have a different size of frame when you put a 50mm lens on it. It helps to use an easy number to identify what a lens will do once put on a camera. It is factor you might want to use. Otherwise it takes a lot of lens changes if you want to match frame with 2 different cameras.... Scarlet-W crop factor/sensor size/lens framing it is an important number for a lot pf photographers who jumped into the initial Scarlet wagon for stills and motion.

Congrats to the RED team for creating another camera and moving the announcement to a time that makes a lot of people happy. I loved this brand for many years, and just recently got into an Epic Dragon. Waiting for my next camera to be announced yet. Actually you did, but I can't buy a Carbon Weapon yet....:)

Heh. Probably time that I join the union then :) Been a ghost for too long and even working on those gigs. Weird career path for sure.

Thank you for those kind words. Very humbling.

wait what? you arent even in the union? wow!
i thought i saw you in ICG mag this month?

That's what I was looking for! However, am I correct in assuming this what I will call "change in field of view" is the same as my current Scarlet? Or is is smaller?

Same pixel-size, so when shooting the same resolution the FOV on Scarlet-W and Scarlet-X/Dragon will be identical.

i actually like the dual outrigger handle design for the raven, is it compatible? it says its compatible with weapon, but no mention of raven or scarlet-w… i ordered the powered new outrigger, but i was thinking i dont want a top hadle since it will get in the way of the monitor and the one sided handle is a bit weird unless you are palming the rest of the camera. as most of us are, hoping for a side handle with user control button and dials for focus and iris, then attaching the one sided outrigger handle on the opposite side…cant wait until those more bits are released so we can all figure out what we want exactly!

Marc, I think you made the right choice (and I did the same thing).

IMO, Epic-D is a solid two steps above Scar-W and costed less (then the expired trade-in deal).

$9,950 Scar-D to Epic-D trade-in (expired offer)
for 6K(9 times 2K) @ 4:1 (up to 200MB/s)
vs
$11,700 Scar-W + Base I/O
for 5K(6.25 times 2K) @ 4:1 (up to 140MB/s)
(Scar-W requires an expander for a fairer comparison)

Scar-W is roughly 30% less resolution and 30% more compression then Epic-D

Sure Scar-W has nice ergo features, WiFi, and approximately half a stop more DR

However, for overcrank potential, Scar-W is drastically reduced (and chopped in half at 5K)
Epic-D 100fps@6KWS (120fps@5KWS)
vs
Scar-W 60fps@5KWS

Also, double 4K acquisition is 5.5K and something Scar-W can't do.

That´s really a cool offer for Scarlet-D owners.

All DSMC2 accessories are compatible w/ all DSMC2 cameras (Raven, Scar-W, VVeapon);
However, I do notice less mounting screw points on top of Raven.

Thus Raven might need a top half plate for some rigging solutions compared to S-W and VV.

Jordan, last night was getting the new stuff up. Over the coming days, we will be updating FAQs and older accessory compatibility...
