  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED STANDARD OLPF for RED Weapon and RED Dragon.

I wonder if fixed olpf in Raven will differ from swappable STO.
There must be a benefit if olpf is optimized for the very same, but smaller sensor, isn't it?

Got mine yesterday and couldn't be more pleased.
The skintones that were previously quite leathery with the STH OLPF are now a lovely natural shade of pink. In fact the entire colour range seems more natural.
And the low light potential is amazing. Where I never used to exceed 1600ISO I think ISO3200 is now workable if you have a tolerance for a bit of organic grain. The 6400ISO grain looks nice too, and a bit of crushing from 6K to 1080p, and a pass with Neat Video will clean it up very nicely.

I have 5 days shooting outside Manila next week. I can't wait to put the new OLPF through its paces.

finally got around to trying the new standard... and yup, it rocks.

I can imagine many treating it as a "set it and forget it" OLPF solution.

It is also very neutral; where-as the STH feels like kodak colors(which I happen to like).

ISO 2000 is more usable now for narrative w/ the new standard;
I shot the same makeshift test scene, one rated at 500ASA the other 2000, at 5.5K FF
adjusted glass to compensate for the exposure change
pushed the 500 to 800 and pulled the 2000 to 1600
then shrunk everything down to fit a UHD canvas...

...Frankly the resulting images and noise patterns were very similar (I used DEB).

I have done some night exterior informal tests @ ISO 1280 - very pleasing low noise at that rating. Have always loved the STH for extreme sun - backlit exteriors - will be interesting to see the comparison.

Dragon Standard almost seems cleaner than LLO. Just shot for a week with it and am blow away by the cleaner low end as well as the skin tone rendition. I'd say this is just going to sit in my camera. I've been swapping LLO and STH a lot since the swappable upgrade. I think with the Standard they've perfected the balance and color of the Dragon sensor. Nice work RED.

Couple things to add to those on the fence.
- No "red dot" pattern at lower T stops, only higher. Similar to Epic MX.
- Much cleaner low end, but skin tones are very pleasing.
- No Green Cast like the STH OLPF.

I'd say this is more of the "Arri Alexa" look in terms of highlight and low end balance. LLO seemed to have too many weird artifacts in the low end ( Single Orbs / Pattern Red Orb ) and the STH had a green cast to everything. Standard has none of those weaknesses, and a lot of the strengths of each.

glad your happy Charles... What you listed is exactly what we set out to do with the Standard filter... For it to be the Standard :)

And holy crap did you hit the nail on the head with this one! I've been shooting on my shiny new Standard OLPF (Thank you again Mr. Land!) for the last week straight and every time I turn on my camera I fall in love all over again (And so do my clients)!

In the last week, that OLPF has seen a calendar shoot with playboy models, a night exterior narrative pickup day, a silly commercial spoof, and a talking head interview. All of which it absolutely excelled in! I was most curious with how it would handle the night exteriors. I found that it could easily be pushed to 1600ISO without sweating (and could push all the way to 3200 with careful grading).

I still absolutely LOVE the look from the Skin Tone OLPF, so I'll probably shoot my narrative projects with that.
But for all my commercial work, the Standard is staying right where it is right now ;)

Congratulations RED team for another huge leap forward!
