  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED RAVEN

Jarred said its a Canon fixed mount... many days a go on here dude. Trust me... they are not keeping quiet about that. Jarred definitely spilled the beans way before the announcement. If you don't like the fact that its a Canon mount... O' well... many other RED camera options out there.

Perhaps now it should be highlighted in the specs break down that is a Canon fixed mount for all the new people looking at the official release thread.

I'm french, and a lot has been lost in translation.. Of course i know since the first tease pics that it will be a fixed Canon mount, but they keep quiet about "why that choice", why don't they offer other mount options and why kind of impose the use of Canon Lenses? If a fixed mount is cheaper to produce, the smart choice would have been to choose M43 mount, i just don't understand that choice..

Mendes,

If you look at the history of RED, it has always been PL and Canon mount first, then the Nikon mount comes later.

Here is my guess.

The Raven takes advantage of electronic lenses with the motors inside the lens (instead of the body like Nikon). They already have a lot of canon users on all the EPIC and Scarlet cameras. No one said that there will be no PL and Nikon versions of this camera. A later version in PL would be a great camera and make use of virtually ALL the cinema glass out there. I imagine there might be a nikon version and hopefully a PL version as well.

but it is clear that this camera addresses the needs of a large market segment and gets them into the RED ecosystem with the glass the might already own.

These are just my own thoughts but it makes total sense that Canon is first.

This is going to be the de facto indie and aerial cinema camera standard. Well done Red. So, so happy for the Red Team. The buzz around it is just positive and phenomenal. Well deserved. This is the next step!

I started with Scarlet and Old Nikon AI Lenses,Then I got Epic with all professional Cinema PL lenses,Then I Grown-Up with Dragon,Everything I made from Red Scarlet Camera. Now I am happy with my Dragon Epic and all Facility.Thank you Red

I get it but my real question is: Do they have some surprises concerning the mount options? I hope they have cause this Raven could beautifully replace my Red one Mx..

Here's an enormous round of applause to Jim, Jarred, Brent, Graeme and the entire RED family for accomplishing the impossible -- yet again. Jim remains a bad ass with a heart of gold; the kind of guy that might invite you to his home, and then walk out on a meeting filled with notables to shake your hand. :) I'm exceedingly happy to see this gentleman succeed.

Jarred and Brent are just as awesome fielding a million tasks, never sleeping and a contending with a string of verbose customers. Hahaha. And the list of considerate, talented and genuine personalities extends across all the less public departments I have been fortunate to meet. RED seems to have a real knack for hiring brilliant, and passionate individuals.

Overall, RED stands as a testament to the "little guys" and "underdogs." Do what you want, do it to the very best of your ability, and do not compromise in the process. Life is too fleeting for anything less.

Like others here, I left the ostensible security of a network to pursue a dream. Aside from providing awesome instruments, RED contributed to the courage needed to get out and attempt to make a difference. We now have the ability to tell diverse stories from unique perspectives, with the pliability to craft an image that bolsters narrative. So many projects are captured using RED, and yet, each project can demonstrate its own unique look.

The latest advancement RAVEN is sure to grant even more indie artists the ability to produce, and irrespective of what you mount it to, filmmakers have the latitude to eke out beautiful results.

I could not be more proud of you guys. Thank you for everything.

Continued blessings,

Eryc

well I just ordered. Here's a toast to my 2nd Red camera !

p.s. so is there ANY reliable solution to mount PL glass on this thing or no?

We shot this Dragon @ 4.5K on a 24mm Standard Prime (custom modded to EOS). Should give you a pretty good idea of what RAVEN looks/feels like...at a smidge under at 4K:

p.s. let's start taking bets of who ships first, Ursa Mini or Raven. Jarred the race is ON!!! I know you guys can do it ;-) lol

Does red ship to military APO address? I don't see it as an option in the pre-order page :(.

IMPORTANT

IMPORTANT

Looks like we choked the servers around 11:20pm PT until 12:40am PT.

So, I will have our team hear check for orders between those times where one person placed more than one order. A rep will contact those people in that could have apparant duplicate orders before processing deposits to confirm actual order. Fair?

Thanks Brent. Appreciate all the hard work. Cheers.

The right tool for each job, I understand this is a game changer for the other camera manufacturers (ARRI, BM, Sony) but not a game changer for the RED lineup, to each its own, some may be thinking about the price drop of their cameras, but I'm sure the fall wont be painful, and I am sure that some firmware updates will come to the previous lineup to regain strength and not die away obsolete.

The RAVEN sounds like the most advanced light weight camera to be airborne into the drone era, I'm sure Jarred and the team are already on to something here ( wireless fast focus pulling and aperture control via canon circuit and live WiFi live stream for the focus puller) that is why canon is the choice, loosing weight was crucial, but also can see how the megapixel diet helped out, now a 8MPX means less data = faster rate, the algorithm works better that's why its that almost pixel pervert 3:1 compression rate, overall one small step for Red and another leap for Filmmakers. Congrats Jarred, Jim, and all the wonderful team at RED.

I used to go to bmcuser for I used to own the original BMCC and BMPCC and oh boy, its depressing in there now. Its a bitch-fest. A lot of angry customers lol.
