  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Announcing RED RAVEN

so can you skip the red monitor if you can do all the settings through wifi and just go with the new i/o an evf?
id rather have an evf then the red monitor if i had to choose, unless thats the only way to do the settings.

Yes. I did exactly that earlier today on RAVEN. Check out Foolcontrol. It is one of the best things that will ever happen to your RED camera... Focus and Iris control ( with Canon lenses) and all camera settings from something that is already in your pocket :)

Of course I am here. I am so proud of Jarred, Brent and the entire RED team for pulling this off.

Jim

Always great seen you here amongst us Jim, even so we know you are always around at the back end... And yeah, agree this is yet an other MAJOR one your team just pulled off... CONGRATS!!

PS: See you in Mauritius on your way to Fiji?

It's like this thread and the 4k4all thread are in a loop on the new posts

Any word on which OLPF is in this beast? I assume its non removable so this is pretty important info.

I've been getting "blown up" through social media, email, and phone from a few peeps asking "what they should buy". A lot of people who are very, very new to RED.

Everybody is going to be different and have different needs regarding their "ideal shooting kit". However, since I'm getting asked a lot and this is fairly similar to what my situation was when jumping in on Scarlet-X, I don't mind sharing a couple thoughts.

Media
This one's an easy one. If you can, get a minimum of two cards. Doesn't matter really which capacity. Though if you are shooting concerts bigger is better for long takes.
I've met people who have one REDMAG or MINI-MAG, but the thing is you fill up mags and typically offload them. If you run out of space on the mag you are "out of film". Always good to have a second one handy. Typically it's even good to have 4 or more mags.

It will always depend on what you are shooting and how you are shooting it, but more media is typically a good thing to get. I just wrapped a job where I was filling up 6-8 mags a day. Looooooooong takes. Full shoot days.

By the Power of Greyskull, Batteries!

Again it will depend on how and what you shoot, but I personally recommend getting enough power to run for a shooting day. Typically about RED cameras run about 60Wh per hour, though I think Weapon and Raven have improved this slightly as I am getting nice results on the REDVOLT XLs thus far.

A RED Brick (140Wh - V-Lock) should last you about 2 hours and 15 minutes. REDVOLT XLs (89Wh) are getting me about 1 hour and 45 minutes on Weapon (still testing).

Basically, like MINI-MAGs you'll want 2 or 4 batteries overall. And if you get 4 you can charge while filming fairly comfortably.

Lenses

I started with the EF Mount on my Scarlet-X M-X back in 2011 and already had a slew of Canon glass. If I had to get "one lens" that's a prime? Likely something in the 24, 25, 28, or 35mm range. A zoom? That Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 pretty much is ideal for a short range fast zoom.
A good starter set to me would be something in the 14-16mm range, 24-25mm range, 28-35mm, 50mm-ish, and 85mm-ish. That 5 approximate focal lengths can work for nearly all types of filming on this nearly S35/APS-C sized Dragon Sensor in Raven.
You can also go with a 3 lens set and play they "wide, medium, tele" game. I love working that way sometimes as well.

The new STANDARD one I believe... in between the LLO and the STH.

Can the Raven accept EF-S lenses? Or only EF mount?

Omg been trying to pre order it for 2 hours now.... so many errors website over loaded? we finally got to the check out and pay we put in card info and loaded a blank white page then charged only a dollar to our card so i refreshed page and is asking for card info again -.- I feel like my number in line is slow slipping away more and more lol, It now wont even let me log in telling me this page cannot be found must have been deleted or movied but with the red logo and website still in view

thank you, about battery power, do they connect right to the v mount on the back of the new i/o, or do you need another battery module on top of that? and if it does connect right to it with no module, is that only the brick?

I've been reading and haven't seen an answer, deposit is refundable?

Raven PL fixed coming as well? Or Canon only?
