Hello all. Looking for some feedback/reviews about the Angie 30-80 DP.

Can't seem to find much footage online. Maybe someone has some frame grabs from the Epic/Scarlet that they shot with this lens?

Apart from shooting my own and clients' projects, how popular is this lens in the rental market?

Thanks for any and all input!

Thanks Louis. I had seen the CAT one a while ago, it looked very nice. I think I might go to Abel Cine one of these days and see if I could try it out.

We recently purchased both the 30-80 and the 16-42 for our in-house department and are really happy with both of them! We needed a PL mount zoom, and it was between the Fujinon Cabrio 19-90 and the two Optimos, we chose the Optimos.

You can see some shots in one of our commercials that were shot with them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQxicqTVow4 -- the table shots starting at :14 seconds were all with the Optimos. The rest of the spot was shot with Master Primes, and they cut just fine together. They have a nice look to them, coming from using Canon lenses that were sharp, there's just something more "filmic" looking about the Angenieux lenses.

I just shot a bunch of stuff with them that will be shown in 4K soon, so I'm anxious to see how they hold up sharpness-wise in 4K.

Hi Evin,

How did you find the 16-42 and 30-80 were, coverage-wise, with the Dragon sensor?

thx,
P

Our experience has been same as others with the 30-80 as far as image. Beautiful. Zero breathing too.

I just got the 16-42, I think I'll have to get the 30-80 in a few months.

and for quite sometime now too! How much for the set Norm?

I have both 16-42 and 30-80's for sale if anyone is interested.

Thanks,

Norm

Dominick,

I too have wondered the same. The downfall is you can't use them with some film cameras, maybe most? For a rental maybe that might effect 10% of rentals? Maybe less? Film rentals and film camera's are losing value VS digital of course.

I've talked with several of my DP friends in LA and a few folks on RU here and I've never heard anything bad. People seem to like them, use them and be happy. I've heard several times they have a more "organic" or "filmic" quality. Without using them myself I can't quantify these details.

The 16-42 will not cover 6k on the wide end. The 30-80mm should have little trouble. Let me get Phil's Dragon coverage sheet up to confirm...

Guess the zooms aren't here. Evin would be a good guy to answer the coverage question.

We are going to do a zoom test similar to the SALT III tests coming up once we receive our new Dragon sensor and will include these zooms for sure.

Footage looks great David, nice work. I can see the filmic look everyone always mentions about them. Let me, and all of us, know how they look in 4K!

A good portion of my Dragon test was shot on the DP Optimos...

Also they are essentially indistinguishable from the film versions (15-40 & 28-76).

Ah very nice. I saw your test when it came out but didn't know it was shot with those lenses. At half the price of the film versions, they seem like a great deal. I'm also interested in how they performed on the Dragon. Were you able to shoot in 6K? I read on the forums that the Optimo DP line will not cover the full 6K of the Epic-D. Thanks!

True, they don't work on film cameras due to the rear element protruding too far out. But seeing how little film I've seen being shot lately I don't think I'm too worried about it. I've heard so many good things about the lens that I decided to check it out.

Yes, Evin please let us know about the lens coverage!

The DPs did a pretty good job covering 6K, I remember having to zoom in like 1-2mm on the 16-42mm to get the corners to clear.
I wouldn't even worry about it since most projects will shoot 5K, 5.5K or 6KWS. The 6K full sensor is an odd 1.9:1 aspect ratio that I wouldn't use much. If you go back and watch "Dragon Skin" you can see the very slight amount of vignette in the corners of the 6K FF which was all I shot and I did not post crop anything.

I often rent it with the F55s/F5s or Epics/Scarlets.

The 16-42 and 30-80 are really nice. I like the size of them, they are very compact and cover a decent range. Mechanics are very good too. I think they are quite popular rental items too. They are my go to lenses whenever I travel by plane and want to take zoom lenses instead of primes.

Optical Quality: Big thumbs up!

Perfect. I had noticed that when I watched Dragon Skin the first time.
Thanks Evin.

Great to hear. Yes I did notice the vignette and figured it was FF. I probably won't be shooting 6K anytime soon anyway, but it's good knowing the lens has it covered.

Awesome, thanks. I got my hands on the 16-42 the other day and I really liked the way it felt. Seemed pretty solid.
