  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Angenieux EZ lenses

Thanks Harvey!

In low key settings the lower contrast of the Angie would be a godsend but in higher contrast situations CAs are better controlled on the Fujinon...Cabrio is cleaner WO @ T2.9 vs the Angie @ T2.9 it seems, no?

Yeah Bob with the super 35 rear optical block you only get to 5k. I have the full frame block but haven't swapped it in yet.

I would say the cabrio feels a tiny bit sharper at 2.9 and yes seems to be a bit better in terms of CA. On the flip side, the Cabrio felt noticeably darker at 2.9 than the EZ 1. Not sure if that is coming from light loss as you get closer to 90mm but I definitely felt it.

Wish Angenieux had designed for full coverage on red sensors also :(

Agreed. Especially because in some videos I've seen, they claim the lens produces a natural image circle between the two formats. So the FF rear block is essentially an expander, and the S35 rear block is essentially a speedbooster. Which leads me to believe that the in-between would cover RED and be something like a T2.6.

Added a few more frames from the Angie. Finally got to put it through its paces on a shoot.

Thanks a ton Harvey. I'm waiting on a quote from Band Pro now :P Not fully decided yet.

Thanks Dan! Tucker Macdonald deserves all the credit on this one. You get your EZ 2 yet? Also we need to do some Atlas 4perf testing!

Haven't ordered ours yet. I really wanted to try the EZ1 out first. But so far I'm very pleased.

I can imagine the Angie EZ zooms with the exchangeable rear optical block being an excellent set for a lot of narrative work. Longtime RedUser, and gifted DP, Evin Grant got a lot of mileage out of his Angie DP Rouge zooms for narrative. They are especially valuable for situations where production eschews primes to save time. Moreover, two compact zooms in a compact case give you a great option for 2nd unit, pickups, etc where big boxes of primes and lots of lens changes in a rough environment would suck.

The other key plus is the complimentary rendering of human skin and desaturated colors that Angie's are known for. In a lot of narrative projects I've been on, making "pretty" pictures is far more important than any technical spec. I haven't worked with an EZ zoom yet, but over the years I have been consistently impressed with the mechanics of Angie zooms - ideal for shots where focus racks, slow zooms, etc are required to service story beats. YMMV.

Has anyone tested how well the EZ-2 covers Helium 8K? (in the 15-40 configuration)
...Or, How badly it vignettes

Hoping to test that combo soon. It's worth noting that the full VV frame is 40.96mm wide, nearly 5mm wider than 24x36 FF35, so vignetting is likely on a lot of FF35 lenses. That said, there are a couple of ways to avoid that issue. To keep the DCI-ish aspect ratio of 1.89:1 for theatrical release, you can retreat to 7K FF where the width is only 35.84. For a 16:9 finish, using lenses that have a more generous image circle, you could try 8K HD which is 38.4mm wide.

As soon as I get the chance, I'll try 8K FF, 7K FF and 8K HD formats with the EZ zooms and report my findings. You might also check to see if Phil has tested them yet, he's a beast and typically quite precise in his testing.

Thanks Blair
I guess I should have specified, I meant the Helium 8K S35. (I have the Epic-W camera)

Which I gather is very similar to, but slightly smaller in dimensions than Dragon 6K.

Hard to keep track of all the different sensors these days...

Hoping for some frame grabs!

Just tested the EZ-1 S35 30-90 on my WEAPON Helium.

...considerable vignette on 8KF. ..slight vignette at 8KHD (useable to my eye). Zero Vignette at 7KF.

EDIT: ..zooming to 35 gets rid of any and all vignetting at 8KF.

Thanks Joe!
I suspect the EZ-2 vignettes more?
(Usable 8KHD is what I long for.)

I think that Zeiss CZ lenses are better than anginox e z 1 and2 ,in terms of overall optical quality like boketh sharpness,ca,color retention, etc, this is evident when compared the footage of Zeiss28-80 t/2.9 to anginox ez1 futage, only downside of Zeiss CZ is higher price and weight, both are full frame lenses, but the weight of the super35 model of anginox ez1 is more than its corresponding full frame lens, means that by removing the rear end windowed part of the super35 ,it is converted to full frame
