Angenieux EZ lenses

I know this is an "old" thread, but did someone a lens flare test?

Angenieuz EZ Lenses

For the folks wondering about the Angenieux EZ-2 15-40mm T2, I just took delivery of mine today. I have a Dragon, which is just slightly larger than Helium, so this should inform all the S35 RED folks out there. The 15-40mm covers 6K Full from about 17-40mm. It covers 5.5K Full at all focal lengths. For anyone wondering about the image quality: great first impression. Sharp on center wide open. Edges fall off a little, but not much. There is barrel distortion at the wide end. I personally don't mind that. I have the 3 Zeiss CZ Zooms, and the Zeiss 15-30 is more corrected as far as distortion goes. Don't ask me to pick winners between the Zeiss CZs and Angie EZs. They are all amazing lenses and they are different tools for different jobs. Breathing on the EZ-2 is pretty much nonexistent. There's barely any at the long end, and none at the wide end. One nice surprise: the lenses are marked and marketed as having a 2' close focus. You can rotate past the 2' mark on both lenses. I measured 21" on the 15-40 and 21.5" on the 30-90. Someone on this thread mentioned that the lenses were designed to cover FF, and they basically swap out the rear optics with sort of speed booster. That's mostly correct. The story I got from the top tech person at Band Pro, was that the EZs were designed somewhere in the middle of S35 and FF. I think he said something like a 36mm image circle. The FF rear optical group expands the image slightly for FF and the S35 rear optical group condenses it slightly for S35. I have had the lens for a couple hours, so I have not done any thorough testing, and I have not tested out the FF rear optics yet. What I can say is, I have no regrets buying these lenses. 15-90mm T2 in 2 lightweight lenses...amazing.

Thanks a lot for your first impressions!
I would be really happy with some r3d samples 6k ff (when you have time to share).
Charts (barrel and how sharp center the center is and edges fall off) and real life shots with a lot of details (forest), some flairs and some city night exteriors wide open... ;-)

Have a nice day!

Pat

I am looking at these lenses as well for my Dragon- mostly for lightweight doc style shooting. Any issues with parafocal and breathing on the EZ-1?

As for the "Angie" look, I have not done a side by side comparison comparing the EZs to other Angenieux lenses. I saw a video where someone intercut them with Optimo and Style zooms, and nothing stood out to me. All the footage seemed to match up just fine. Obviously there is nothing scientific about that analysis. It's just my opinion. Whether or not they have the "Angie" look isn't really something that concerned me. I bought them because they are T2 cinema zooms at a great price, and they look awesome, not because they do or do not have an Angie look. I have no brand loyalty. I own and shoot with Zeiss, Canon, Nikon, Lomo, Cooke, Sigma, etc. I intercut different lens brands often. I think most of the folks who are saying they don't have an Angenieux look are probably people that are doubting their quality because they are the cheapest zooms Angenieux has ever designed. I also think owners of Optimo, DP Rouge and Style zooms are probably a little pissed since these lenses in some ways outperform their lenses at a fraction of the price. They aren't perfect. No lens is. But they are great lenses for the price and I use mine constantly and I'm very happy with the results.

Has anybody has luck sourcing an EZ-2 s35 PL? My order at Abel has been launguishing for several weeks without even an estimated fulfillment date.

I would give Band Pro a call as they are the North American distributors.

I took deliver of my EZ-2, but I ordered it the first week the lenses went on sale about a year ago. According to Band Pro, the EZ-2 is a much more complex optical design and takes a lot longer to build than the EZ-1, so delivery will be slower and in smaller batches than the EZ-1. I can say the EZ-2 is worth the wait. It's as good as any of the compact zooms out there in that familiar 15-40mm range and at a T2, it's tough to beat.

I was looking into this as well, buying without the FF block and then adding it later and was told from several European distributors that you only have the option to buy them at the time of the lens. Would be great to know if this is the case as I haven't seen anywhere where you get this option...

I recall seeing a video with Randy Wedick from Band Pro at NAB 2018 saying that the rear optical block is made at the same time FOR the lens it goes mounts to. Makes sense that they wouldn't offer it as an accessory. That said, I don't see why they couldn't offer a service where you mail your lens back and they make the FF block for you.
