Are they really as bad as they say? I see Angelbird has some Cfast 512gb refurbished on their website for $199. Am I asking for trouble?

I may be one of the lucky ones but I've used Cfast and CFXpress cards from Angelbird and had no problems with their cards.

Knock on wood, but I also haven’t suffered a failure from Angelbird cards. Nor Prograde.

That said, I’ve never bought refurbished cards for professional purposes. Not saying there’s any reason for specific concern, but if the risk is even slightly higher, I can’t imagine it would be worth it for me.

I recently had a RED 2TB angelbird fail. Angelbird just released V4 cards a couple weeks ago that should have fixed the issues of their previous cards. So knock on wood they are good from now on.

Ouch. I hope the card wasn't full...

For all of the negative talk against the old school REDmags they were and still are one of the more durable media I’ve come across.

I bought 3 used 1.8 256GB REDmags from a rental house back in 2015 and they already looked like they been to hell and back.

In 2025 those mags (knock on wood) still operate fine and never gave me issues.

I have 4 Angelbird CF cards and 4 Angelbird 1TB CF express and for the most part they are fine. Every now and then I might get a record error message with the CFExpress on the KX and that seemed to be more when filming with PreRecord and a higher resolution slo motion shot.

I have heard reports of Angelbird cards going “blank” if they sat around for a few months without being used but that I never heard anything verifying it.

I'm using one of the refurbished Angelbird 1 TB CF express type B card. So far no issues when recording or reading from the card.

Only one time I had a minor issue after formatting the card. The camera was not able to recognize the card. After a reboot the card was recognized and worked flawless.

Another time I've ejected and later inserted the card without reboot and I got a message about "unapproved media". Recording and reading worked well. After a reboot of the camera there where no further warnings and no issues. Until now this happened only once. The last few eject / insert procedures run without issues.
