  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anamorphic Mode Question

It does in 6K 6:5 Anamorphic Mode:

Phil, Love your info pages! Did you ever get a chance to put together the PDF of all of these? I know you're extremely busy but these are so invaluable. I know I will be printing them on cardstock and laminating them, then having them bound. I would gladly donate some $ to download the full .pdf

I have a few more pages I want to hammer out, but I imagine I can release the PDF soon and just update it when we get there for the extra bits. The fundamentals are in there for sure.

I have to agree with Matt, theses pages are super useful! I keep the PDF of Epic/Scarlet MX info on Google Drive and refer to it all the time on my iPad and phone. Love to have the Dragon info there too. Thanks Phil!!

+1 Thanks Phil!

This is great info, thanks Phil!

It still doesn't solve the issue of being able to use a bit wider ratio while still using the full height of the sensor though (and not being forced to use the full frame 6K width (giving us 3.6:1 after desqueeze).

I'm guessing you can't change that 6:5 drop down menu in the upper right to 3:2? That would be exactly what I would be looking for (which would give me a 3:1 ratio once desqueezed).

It does in 6K 6:5 Anamorphic Mode:

Alexa 4:3 still bigger than 6:5 Dragon?

Dragon 6k sensor size is 30.7 × 15.8mm

If 'm not mistaken, just checked on the web Alexa scope is: 21.30 x 17.82 mm

Epic dragon in 6k ANA 6:5 gives: 18.98x15.8mm

So yes, Alexa ANA is bigger, I actually thought it was the opposite and I told quite a few clients that was the case, oups... But they been all happy anyways, lol.

Yeah I was somewhat disappointed when the sensor size was announced. It's a shame they didn't go just a little bit taller to something around an overall sensor aspect ratio of about 1.72:1 which would have given about the same height as Alexa 4:3.

This then would have also given a greater than 4k horizontal resolution for 6:5.

For the sake of accuracy the sensor size of the Alexa xt in open gate mode for scope 2x is 21.66 x 18.13.
There is no frame size for the numbers you quoted.

Thanks, Phil stated that for us. But I was hoping we could do a 6K 3:2 (or other ratio options) which still use the full height of the sensor (besides having to do 6K FF which gives us such a rediculously wide 3.8:1 ratio making focusing impossible and limiting high fps options to name a few).
Sadly 6K FF with a 2x desqueeze seems to be the only other option for using the full height.

You need to shoot 6K 6:5 2x to get the full 3160 sensor height and the biggest on screen image.

It's under the Advanced tab on the left when you go to your resolution tab

I hear ya man. This more or less comes down to you doing a 1% version of a 1% task. Red can certainly add something to the firmware to allow for this perhaps, but currently it's not there. No other system actually supports what you want to do either because it's rather unorthodox when it comes to standard anamorphic shooting and what the lenses are designed to do.

A thought and toss in the dark, though likely not exactly what you are looking for 2.8:1 can be extracted from 2.4:1 from the 6K 6:5 material. (2.8:1 can be cropped out of 2.4:1)

Though not the total sensor height with that method it nets you what you want allows you to shoot in a supported way today, with some vertical framing freedom I guess. Otherwise 6K FF is what you have to work with at the moment.

I will say, and it has been brought up in the past and mentioned it was a possibility, Dragon was hinted at being able to support custom formats. Meaning you could potentially dial something in. I know one format I'm really keen on exploring that I'd like to punch into the camera somewhere:

newDragonFormatIdea.jpg

As well as a 2.2:1 one.

Perhaps a future firmware update.

Thanks for the suggestion Phil. Really hoping to use the full height of the sensor though, so my only option at this point is to do 6K FF and live with the giant 4:1 ratio.

If you have access don't forget 1.3x anamorphic glass (i.e. Hawk's)
Which would yield 2.522:1 from a 6kFF format. Though that would lower be than your desired 2.8:1 mentioned in your original post.

BTW if anybody's listening! I also would very much like custom format/ frame sizes on camera.

All the best

As I understand there is still no way of shooting 4:3 ana 2:40 with full sensor height? This must be a something RED forgot to put into the format menu, or no? As I can not see any reason for it not to be there shooting 4k 4:3 ana does not use the full sensor height and there is no options as I understand under the 6k menu that would give the right format. Would be great if it was implemented or if some body could explain why.
