I tend to like a slightly wider aspect than the standard 2.4:1 anamorphic ratio, so I have been shooting 6k HD stretched by 2x for recording/viewing but that gives me something crazy like 4.8:1 (and crop edges later) and it's almost impossible to frame and focus because my subject ends up being so small.

In post I end up using about a 2.8:1 image so if I could get something closer to that and not so crazy wide with 2x 6k HD, that would be great. Are there any current ways to do this on Dragon?

Thanks!

You can currently shoot anamorphic in all formats on Dragon, so yes. There is a way to do this. 6K HD at 2X Anamorphic works fine.

*edit just saw what you wrote again. I see you want to create a custom format. That's currently not possible, but maybe in the future. It's been hinted at.

Thanks Phil, but man that's a bummer.
So it's either shoot with a 2.4:1 ratio or if you want wider without losing vertical resolution, you have to shoot 3.6:1 (which is 16:9 with a stretched width for a 2x ana lens).

Or u can shoot 5:4 or 4:3... Am I wrong?

You can shoot any format in anamorphic. What Daniel seems to be looking for is to create a specific format that yields the 2.8:1 he's looking for. In reality I would try out 4.5K 3:2 as that would yield a 3:1 aspect ratio with 2X anamorphic enabled. That gets you rather close. 2.8:1 is fairly unorthodox. It has been mentioned in the past that Dragon might support custom resolutions with a future firmware update. I know there's a few formats I'm dying to try out :)

Thanks for that suggestion Phil. 3:1 ratio would actually be perfect because it's a lot closer to 2.8:1 and gives me just a little room for adjusting my frame in post.

Will 4.5K 3:2 use the full vertical of the Dragon sensor? (I can check this too but curious if you know off the top of your head).

Thanks!

phil are there plans to have 1.5X anamorphic for iscorama ? I know it's seen as not a serious hollywood anamorphic, but would be nice to have that option.

So after doing some more playing around with the settings, and thinking about things more, I've come to the conclusion that with Anamorphic lenses on Epic, to get the best resolution possible, you want to use the full height of the sensor (because the width of the sensor is obviously over sized for a 2x desqueeze).
The full height of the Dragon sensor is 3160. And sadly the ONLY way to use the full height, is to set up using 6K FF with a 2x desqueeze, which leaves you with a HUGE width at 3.6:1 limiting your high frame rate options, filling up cards faster than necessary, making focusing almost impossible on the 5" touch monitor (which should be a 7" as it is) (and increasing transcode times in Redcine X later) among other things.
6K 16:9 gives you a 3120 (I think).
And the stock Anamorphic 4K is only 2800 height. Really confused why the stock Anamorphic modes don't at least have one that uses the full height.

Really hoping for the customizable resolutions to come sooner (or at least a 2.4:1 Anamorphic mode that at least uses the full height of Dragon).

There isn't a 6K ANA mode on dragon. It's really 4K ANA because the height of the sensor limits the width you would use to maintain the classic 2.4:1 ratio. Which would be totally fine if it would use the full height of the sensor, but as I said, it only uses 2800 of the 3160 sensor in the highest res 2.4:1 Anamorphic mode on Dragon...

Someone please correct me if I am wrong...

I'm surprised that 6K ANA mode on the Dragon doesn't use the full sensor height.

Alright I must be doing something wrong then. How do you get this full height ANA mode?
It does, the ideal settings give you a 3840x3160 file.

Yeah, if for just the ANA modes you could just select the ratio, and all settings used the full height, that would be great. Like 2.4:1 ANA, 2.8:1 ANA, 3.2:1 ANA etc.

Nope, on second look my file is at 3072 height. I was certain that I was using the max sensor height so I didn't even really check.

Yes, I second your request for a custom ANA mode which uses the full height!!

Why doesn't ANA mode use full sensor height?

It does in 6K 6:5 Anamorphic Mode:
