  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

An Offer to Disgruntled Filmmakers Who Feel They Missed Out on a Cheap SCARLET....

I disagree, however, that you can't get good work out of people who aren't paid. Even experienced people are hungry to make good films and to work on good projects - you have to be a pragmatist, to see the process through, but we are all creatives and artists, and our blood is fired by creativity, inspiration, and opportunities to do "something bigger" - whatever that means to you. When I say that I will work on your set for free, for the right project, you can bet I will be fully committed to making the project the best it can be. I know I'm not alone or exceptional in expressing that sentiment. This thread is also loaded with people who you can believe in.

It depends on your expectations indeed. Sure, everyone think themselves as artists, unfortunately they aren't a lot to be real ones. I mean, artists from a European point of view, which is far different from the American point of view ;-) I'm not an artist at all, but as I said I live with a true one, and believe me, it has nothing to do with the usual technicians/vfx "artists", commercial directors or photographers, etc... He's in his own world (I hope he won't read this) and my job, when I work with him, is to make sure that the people of his team are the right ones. And now we pay to be sure, after several projects done with volunteers.

Of course, you can be lucky and have a good team of volunteers. But you're taking all the risks. If they want to leave the set, they leave it. And you're dead. From my producer's point of view, it's safer to contact directly the people I know, I've worked with, or the ones who are recommended to me. Setting up a crew team just with an internet forum and a Facebook page is, well, coming with a flower on your gun (bad translation from the French). Moreover, paying a little bit, not necessary a lot, gives you as a producer something very important : the possibility of selection. If, as a director, your project has to be selected by the cameraman to get it done, you're dead in the end. Authority is crucial when it comes to team management.

No, Matt, not at all. I'm just trying to give another point of view : I know it's a camera forum, therefore all the opinions are camera-centric. I'm just trying to warn some indy filmmakers who could see this opportunity without seeing all the other aspects, in particular the risks they'll have to take working with volunteer people. You know, you can't ask the same things to your crew if they do you a favour or if they're paid, even little paid ;-)

You can call this pessimism, or realism ;-)

Kristen, I thought you might be a lady, but I try not to assume ;-P Seriously, I hope I didn't offend, where I am from, "you guys" just refers to a general group of people and is used like "you folks" or "You people"... without being old-timey or mildly offensive, haha.

I disagree strongly that this forums opinions are ALL camera centric. I can't count the times I have heard people here say that "the story is most important" "good actors are more important than a good camera" "Sound is half of what you see" and "Don't wait for any given camera, shoot with what you have". I think this is a filmmaker forum, personally. And a professional one at that!

I respect that someone may think that the thread isn't really helpful. I completely disagree and don't see how the offer of a free pro camera, production support, and money for actors plus all the other resources people have put forward isn't helpful... But I respect the different opinion.

Saving the cost of a red rental is a big price tag in savings. And I think it is VERY difficult to find wuality people who can work for free. So the offered help on this thread is amazing, really.

Anyway, give aways like this, the panavision one, the one Canon has going on are not a complete production plug-and-play offer, but they are a huge helping hand.

So I am still feeling good about things and the state of the world when people are willing to give of themselves to take a chance on someone. Tis the season (almost) after all! :-D

Where did the thought come from that a cameraman is picking a director for a project?

I missed that inference.

My feeling is that a filmmaker is being enabled, not that a camera person is picking a director... Just trying to clarify.

Really, though, it's all about what Meryem is interested and who she wants to support in her own way. It can't be generalized because it's a unique situation.

Some how we seem to have gone a bot off the rails here.

I think the offers here are great, equipment, expertise, money, time, and love. In Any project there is risk, but the people that haunt the Red forum to me are here out of love, be it of the hardware, the art, or just the passion to do something well. When I offered my support of my Epic and other gear, money, and time, that was as has been said, to be part of something good, interesting, and exciting. When I commit, I commit, I may not be the hollywood shooter, just mainly a ENG guy who shoots news and Docs in war zones, but I love making movies, I have loved it when I have worked on an indie film. And would jump at the chance to work on a feature, even if its not behind the camera, even as an AC, or grip, for I think the learning experience for me would be awesome.

I think everyone here who has thrown in has done it for various reasons that are close to the heart, so lets run with that, find the story, find the team, and get it organized. That is an area I can help out on , after running a network operations for a number of years coordinating field teams and meeting news deadlines in Afghanistan and now in SA I can help with that. One thing we all have not done is send to Meryem the specifics of what we can offer, be it in gear, locations, expertise, services, etc. I think that would be a good next step so that we know what the inventory of skills and assets we have to work with.

One thing that bothers me is some of the naysayers, we all have dreams to do great things, and I see this thread as a collection of people that want to do that, and seem driven to succeed, nothing great is easy, and so I for one am ready to put in the hard work. Meryem, drop me a PM on what I can do to help from an organization, paperwork, planning stand point. I just got back today from South Africa and have the next period relatively free until mid Jan.

Ron

Hi Ron - we are just chatting here. Not off the rails at all. I'm still looking at some submissions - got two new ones today - just chatting, while we give the process a little air.

Love your can-do attitude and will to organize the troops - PM coming.

Yes Ron, it's just a discussion. Nothing more. I hope my opinion won't hide Meryem's offer, which is, again, very generous. This thread is one of the most interesting ones I've read here, and I'm truly interested in the final result.

true.

i´like to say ...

... art is a state of mind ... :-)

i wouldn´t say there is any country, nation or organizations point of view that is superior than any other,
since art grows from the artists understanding and look at things ...

... and the unstoppable drive to transform "it" into some form of expression ....

the artist is driven. on its own terms and right.

Every artist chooses his/her realm of action.

VFX artist or color grading artist are exactly that, if they say so.

There are technicians and artists. It depends on our mindset. ... where the latter includes the first ... and vice versa ...

i have seen master craftsman at work, that i see as artists ... and they would refrain from doing so ....

... and any artist of maturity would probably agree, to have mastered a particular skill or many thereof ...

... and it may as well be, she (he) has invented it ... hehe

Art is a state of mind.

I Love this discussion

I am going to casually bump this thread by saying, while Meryem didn't decide to go with my proposal, I really hope we all find out what she does choose to support.

It would be so fun to follow along on here as a filmmaker brings something to life with the help of a lot of great RedUser... users, lol.

I have 3 projects that I'm looking at - but haven't moved any of them forward - my daughter's birthday took over my brain last week. Planning for a phalanx of little girls in your basement can be preoccupying.

As I chew through this, I think what we need is to build a thread -- or a forum, if Jarred would support it -- which is an "Exchange or Trade of Services" among redusers.

I can say this - of the three projects that I like, none of them can use all of the resources that have been offered here. And yet, everyone likes to work on good projects -- it's obvious.

How can we use reduser to put people in collaboration? It would be great if we could find a way to centralize and coordinate all of this power, to get everyone working on projects that they personally resonate with - each one of the projects that I like - also come with features that others may NOT like or appreciate.

I also probably turned away perfectly decent projects that other people might want to jump on - but I have no way of knowing, for sure. It would be great if you could find a way to make all projects available to all people willing to supply resources.

:-)

I guess, it is my understanding, that reduser is the place to be, to talk everything RED.
It is my understanding, that collaborative film making efforts go beyond the purpose of this forum, as is now ... (may change?) ....

It is a good thing, that this forum is about RED related topics only, since everything else would just create a lot of noise and make it impossible to communicate for RED with the userbase ...

i´dont like to talk or write about things that aren´t ready ...
and i want to take my time to think stuff through ... so no rushing ...

but since it has been asked ... ;-)

... i am working on something .... as an extension to our fine community here .... with features that should help us to do just what we need - collaborate ....
i am actually custom coding it ... :-) ... so we can expand it into any direction that is required by enough people .... to justify development time .... :-)

it´ll be called FilmCollaboration™ .... should have an online software part, some mobile integration, profile and project pages ...

it shall happen here http://filmcollaboration.com

I´ll release it in steps as they become ready ... and go on developing depending on response and feedback ...

right now, you can support it and hook up socially on the best social network on the planet ... (as of today)

the facebook page is here: http://facebook.com/film.collaboration
the FB group is here : http://www.facebook.com/groups/165493473546365/

... more info to come ...

cheers
:-)

Fantastic work Detlev and Meryem. If this thing can build some momentum it would be awesome.
