  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

An Epic First Day :)

I guess this is as good a time as any to mention that I have left ASSIMILATE and joined 3ality Digital... ;)

Well Lucas I imagine that this is a move for the best, and I guess we will be working together soon in Italy,
as we are planning on getting "3" 3Ality rigs for the 6 Epics coming soon ;)

When I visited their facility, Angela Wilson (your sister?) really impressed me with the presentation and look forward in using their TS-5's.

Wow. Isn't this the thread of good decisions. Can somebody help me with mine?:rolleyes5:

Do you know how to become a millionaire? Start with a billion and build a camera... :-)

Jim

Is the sequel, "Build an epic product line and disrupt the market..."?

Would any of the competition buy you out for what you put it to Red?

Hmmm...Not untill they get their hands on an Epic..tear it apart..and find that
they are unable to reproduce it. ...At that point they might.

If we are going to start ridiculous paranoid rumors....

I'm sure some company has already tried. Let's hope it doesn't happen for a long time. More likely Red might be doing the buying, when the time is right.
Isn't Panavision having some financial difficulty?
hehehehe.......

Now I know why. All the best Luki - Lim

I think it's great.

This really means Tattoo is underway and that also means we will all benifit from what comes out of this.

Thank you John Schwartzman for your latest festive posts. :) And happy holidays! Looking forward to hearing more about your epic experiences as you find the time to share. Best of luck to you and to the entire team.

P.S.: Please stop praising Brook or we will never be able to afford him. ;) Just kidding or course. We are always eager to hear more from you Brook. Hope you can find the time to share what you can. All the best!

Jim is right today we shot in a very challenging location, a warehouse with an open end, I built up the fill a little and let it go, Brook and looked at the images and I felt HDRx in this case wasn't necessary I wanted the outside to glow a little.

I think Michael Cioni or Steve Fairburn could comment on workflow, All I know is we stick these "hershey bars" into the side of the cameras a few times a day and I go and visit with Brook, we talk color, density and vibe and then LightIron makes there deliverables for Pietro Scalia our editor. I know we generate a lot of data because Brook's Tiff's crashed my MacPro, not my Macbook Pro, due to their size, so I assume the red rocket cards are screaming. Today we also shot handheld 3D, I think the TS-5 rigs weigh about 50lbs with all the crap on them, heavy by 2D standards but featherweight by 3D standards. Lucas has promised me a carbon fiber rig after Christmas for steadicam/handheld so that should drop some lb's. What I really love is that on my first digital movie I am working the same as I would with film in terms of lighting and exposure and having Brook with me is kind of like having training wheels on a bike, I know that I am not going to fall.

"hershey bars", a new term is coined, and an apt one at that.

Hi John, congrats.

3 little questions.

1.
You rate the epic with 800 ASA.
When shooting in daylight, do you use heavy ND Filters or just dial the EPICs ISO down?

2.
Is your lightmeter matching Epics ISO?

3.
Can you resist to take an Epic home at weekends just to shoot for fun?

just asking to learn from the masters

thanks

Day two is in the can!

Since I'm not sure what I'm allowed to say, I'm going to refrain from answering technical questions. What I will say is that the cameras are performing fantastically, the footage is spectacular and the support we've had from RED is otherworldly. This is exactly what the Tattoo program is all about! :)

Sorry about crashing your Mac Pro, John! It's crazy how huge 5K TIFFs are!

That says a lot coming from you, Brook. So good to hear.

The Epics are true 800 in daylight and I think 640 in tungsten, the mirror on the 3D rigs cuts out 1 stop, so on interiors I set my meter at 320 and exteriors I set it for 400 and then we ND, we are shooting close to wide open all the time which is very hard on our focus pullers. I spent time with Jim Cameron who extolled the value of shooting with shallow depth of field in 3D to direct the audience as to where to look, Claudio Miranda who shot TRON echoed those views and we are doing the same.

I'm no fan of this 3d stuff, but I am wondering how your process for framing, lighting, etc. has changed compared to normal 2d, John. Are you a fan of 3d? So far, other than Avatar, I've seen very few movies that have been worth the extra $3...

Thanks for the posts! Great to hear that all is well with Epic at this point...

Kevin

I felt the dynamic range of the MX, although good was shy of film, this sensor is the same but in this body and build is delivering incredible latitude, I am not sure if it is the camera or the new color science, and I assume it is a bit of both, in any case it is lovely to work with and in the hand of a good colorist it is a joy.
