  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It has been a great week for 4k. Vimeo released 4K download options yesterday and now Amazon has just announced 4K streaming across their Prime Video service.

Time to get that 4K screen for home... Any suggestions? Costco has a couple...

Most of the 120hz/ 60fps 4K displays are pretty great. ( Just never ever turn on 120hz mode )

The last generation of 4K 30fps TVs were much more hit and miss.
 
Anyone look into what would be a good 4k format to use for a Vimeo upload? I've got a couple of neat 4k clips in ProRes that I'd like to upload, but they're currently at pretty low compression (about 7GB/minute), too large for my lowly 'Plus' account (5GB/day).
 
These are the best times right now.

Netflix - 4K Streaming and 4K for current/future productions
YouTube - 4K support since 2010!
Amazon - 4K Streaming
DirectTV - Now offering 4K satellite

HBO is streaming next year. I sincerely hope they make the 4K move as it fits in with "everything they stand for".

VP9 and H265 are going to be everywhere next year.


I'm excited. Not just because I'm really all about 4K and 4K+ from a capture perspective, but from viewer's perspective and content creators perspective. We'll finally be able to show high quality 4K content and viewers will be able to experience that on a grand scale.

Story first, but good story mixed in with powerful and rich images is going to blow people's minds.
 
Great news! Good to see the digital streaming and download services use their potential more and more to take the lead - as it should be today.
Hope amazon enables it soon in europe.

Time to get a 4k-TV, finally. :)
 
VIMEO is doing something I can't understand. Yes, it announced 4K download options (streaming 4K they claim is next), but instead of allowing other users to download the original 4K file, Vimeo is instead transcoding the original into their 4K lossy/damaged/re-transcoded video file. This makes NO sense to me.

Downloading 4k original files already worked before their announcement, that was never an issue. It should still work.

The news is, they do their own 4k-encodes now. For now you can only download them but it's obviously just a intermediate step and some kind of beta-testing. They'll switch on direct streaming in the future.
 
Thats great! I bought a Seiki 4k 55 inch TV a few months back! Its a cool tv, but max FPS or HZ i think is 30, not 100% sure on that though. It was just over 1K as i remember. The best part is i got it for free, and nothing is free right? Will i lucked out, what happened was i bought it on amazon and paid the little bit extra for Prime Overnight. They gave me a guaranteed delivery date of the next day! I was stoked at the deal i got, however the shipment was delayed due to a error in there warehouse. I had a nice chat with an Amazon Representative and after 10 minutes, i got a full refund to my card. Needless to say i was very pleased, and i wouldn't be surprised if they release a 4K Amazon Fire TV box. Thanks Amazon for the great experience!
 
I've been hoping for a 4K Apple TV which I'm hoping for in the next generation line! But who knows.... its apple.
 
But I bet nearly all of it is 8-bit and highly compressed. At what point is it still considered to be 4K when it's stomped down to 6mbps? Even over-the-air broadcasting and Blu-ray HD can go far beyond 20mbps.

H.265/HEVC offers better compression. So you shouldn't just compare pure bitrates with H.264-encodes. REDRAY did deliver great looking 4k at low bitrates too (and way earlier than HEVC and VP9!!!).

It might not be right to assume 4k needs(!) 4 times the bandwidth of 1080p. That highly depends on the source-material.

8bit, right, it would have been great to have an upgrade here too. HEVC allows more, they could switch it on at some point. But i assume they are just saving bandwidth, it's still streaming and VOD.

Guess we have to wait for Blu4k to get the best possible quality, but it's really great to see the streaming providers pushing the limits and finally moving to 4k. There is no more reason to wait for them.

I wish this would have happened 2 years ago, with REDRAY being the big thing.

Yeah, i expected Apple to go 4k and release a new ATV for it too. I also hoped for FireTV and Google's Nexus Player being 4k-ready... But it guess we have to wait another year for all those things to happen. On the other hand, FireTV and that NexusPlayer might become obsolete, as soon as TVs with Android|TV hit the market.
